SUMMARY:Larison Rock
DESCRIPTION:This is a low end difficult hike which while short distance overall climbs about 1700 feet in the first two miles\, a steady grade. From there to the top\, the grade lessens\, and the rock has modest views to the south and is itself quite impressive. Arrive at the TH about 0945-1000\, on top by lunch\, then back down 1330 (1:30) or 1400 (2:00)\, at the latest. It’s a short drive\, decent trail used for mountain bikes\, and is a nice workout close to town.

If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.) Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. SUMMARY:Finley Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:This is primarily a hiking trip. But we are going to make a brief stop at Bruce Rd to check out what is on one of the largest ponds on the refuge. Then on to headquarters where we will start the hike. We will do the entire loop that includes the Mill Pond trail and the Woodpecker trail and come back to cars. With rain we have had it will be muddy so wear appropriate foot gear or bring a change of shoes. This is a mixed forest of firs and oaks with hanging moss very prehistoric.

SUMMARY:Dimple Hill
DESCRIPTION:We will meet in the Jerry’s Home Improvement Center parking lot\, Beltline at Highway 99\, at the far side of the parking lot from the store\, next to Highway 99 and the Jerry’s sign.\nThe hike will begin at Chip Ross Park on the north side of Corvallis. Weather permitting\, there are good views of Corvallis from the upper reaches of Chip Ross Park. We’ll take Dan’s Trail to the summit of Dimple Hill and stop for lunch and good views to the south. Most of Dan’s Trail is a long and steady uphill\, with plenty of switchbacks to keep it from becoming too steep. The trail is muddy in places\, but generally in good condition\, and there are mountain bikers to watch out for. On November 13 there was one tree down across the trail.

SUMMARY:Green Island Birdwalk
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED due to dangerous weather conditions!!! \nMeeting place: Papa’s Pizza\, 1577 Coburg Rd. \nGreen Island\, the location of this birdwalk\, sponsored by the Conservation/Science & Education Committee\, is open to the public periodically by the McKenzie River Trust. It is a former agricultural site\, now transforming into a diverse riparian woodland habitat. On our March 2021\, visit we took the north loop and saw many swallows taking advantage of Dennis Arendt’s painted boxes\, and around a couple of dozen bird species. Randy Sinnott\, local birder\, will lead the “listening & looking.” \nIn case of very windy/rainy weather\, trip will be re-scheduled\, participants will be notified in advance.

SUMMARY:Salmon Creek Trail South
DESCRIPTION:This moderate\, out-and-back hike is close to the Kwis fire which is still not completely contained. Oakridge locals assure me that the trail is open\, although there are some downed trees across the trail and there may be smoke. It will be muddy and slippery in places\, but the forest and creek will be beautiful. We can have lunch at the Oakridge fish hatchery\, which will be our turnaround point. \nThere is a very brief stretch of gravel road\, but the drive and parking are suitable for all vehicle types.

SUMMARY:Thurston Hills Vista Loop
DESCRIPTION:Meet at: North Trail Head parking lot off Main Street in East Springfield. You will see the entrance on the right just past Springfield Memorial Cemetery. There is a brand new loop added off the summit of the existing trail. It has amazing features and vistas. It just opened but will not be advertised to the public until next year. This will be a one-way hike with shuttle. I will ask three cars to meet me ahead of time at the trail head off Bob Straub and ride with me to the east trailhead. Then we can shuttle the group back.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:UO Sustainability Walk
DESCRIPTION:This is the second of three tours the University of Oregon has designed to showcase established sustainability practices within buildings and infrastructure\, academic programs\, faculty research\, and student life. This 90-minute walk is more of a saunter and features 10-12 stops when UO Office of Sustainability Director\, Steve Mital will review and discuss specific practices in various campus locations.\nIt is not necessary to participate in all three tours or to go on tours in order. Campus will be on winter break so we will be avoiding crowds.\nThis walk is sponsored by the Conservation\, Science and Education Committee.\n Meetup/Departure Location: NW Corner of 13th and Agate – in front of Oregon Hall

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 8:45 to 9:00.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. Look for Covid-19 Protocols. If you are not willing to follow the guidelines\, please do not join the group. To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions.

SUMMARY:South Willamette Trail
DESCRIPTION:We will park at the Hardesty Mountain Trailhead along highway 58 near milepost 20. We will hike up the main trail\, then left on the South Willamette trail\, with a couple creek crossings and a bit of elevation changes. One creek crossing will involve rocks and a log to cross. The Eula Ridge trailhead will be our turnaround spot. Lovely timber and a variety of understory will be part of this journey. Trekking poles will be helpful for stream crossings on rocks or logs\, depending on the water flow.

SUMMARY:Amanda Trail
DESCRIPTION:This hike is dedicated to Amanda\, a Coos woman who was forcibly marched to a reservation far from her homeland on Oregon’s Trail of Tears. \n The full trail\, from the south side of Yachats to the Cape Perpetua Whispering Trail Rock Shelter\, is 7.6 miles out and back. We’ll be starting our journey with the Ya’Xaik Trail to the north of Yachats\, adding an additional 1.1 miles. This hike may turn out to be shorter however\, because of intermittent closures of the trail from the Amanda statue leading to Cape Perpetua. We’ll find out. It will be a day of history\, flora and fungi. \nParticipants and others who are interested will be invited to participate in a readers’ theater rendition of ‘Amanda Transcending’\, a play by Connie Bennett that explores the sad story of the Coos people’s forced exile from their homeland. \n Here’s a link to the story of the Amanda Trail: https://www.yachatsoregon.org/DocumentCenter/View/71/Amanda-Trail-Story-PDF

SUMMARY:Not All Who Wander Are Lost
DESCRIPTION:This wander will take us up and down hills\, through a hidden park then through the Wayne Morse woods. We will wonder at the gnome village on our way up to the reservoir on College Hill. We will wander back via neighborhood connector paths and wonder at the birds along the newly refurbished chip trail next to the Amazon Canal. Bonus points for those who know what the title of this hike is in reference to.

SUMMARY:Midnight Lake
DESCRIPTION:This is a good first-of-the-season trip for intermediate skiers (it’s really not appropriate for beginners). We’ll plan on heading up to Midnight Lake via the PCT\, then following the trail through the woods over to the road past Bechtel Shelter\, for a nice glide back to Pengra Pass and then the parking lot. Lunch will be at either Midnight Lake or at Bechtel Shelter. Depending on conditions\, it could turn into an out-and-back instead of a loop (for instance\, if it’s icy under the trees). Trip will be cancelled or re-scheduled if snow conditions are inadequate.
