SUMMARY:Matthieu Lakes/4-In-One shuttle
DESCRIPTION:Should be a nice day in the high country Monday\, 5 to 10 degrees cooler than in town. A week ago the bugs in this area were minimal. \nThis will require a short (10 mile or so) car shuttle between trailheads. We will enter via the Matthieu Lakes Trail (#50 – Sullivan)\, head south\, often following the PCT\, and exit past Four-In-One Cone on the Scott Trail (#46 – Sullivan). The hiking mileage and elevation change are approximate and depend on how ambitious people want to be at Yapoah Crater and Four-In-One Cone. The uphill hiking is generally moderate and the Scott Trail section is level and downhill. There are open sections with potentially intense sun. \nTiming: I estimate a leisurely pace of about 2 mph\, a couple of stops\, and lunch puts us on the trail for 6 – 7 hours. Plus driving and shuttle time.

SUMMARY:Oregon South Coast
DESCRIPTION:The Oregon South Coast trip will include hikes and beach walks from Bandon to Otter Point. We will be car camping at Humbug Mt. State Park from July 28 to July 31\, three nights and four days. The total trail miles will be about 30 to 35.  All hikes will be moderate or easy. There is an option for sail boarding or kayaking at Flores Lake (additional fee). Highlights will include Cape Sebastian\, Otter Point\, Port Orford Heads & USCG Museum\, and Bandon Beach. The trip itinerary may be flexible depending on weather and tide conditions. There will be time-off at Gold Beach and Port Orford for dining and exploration. The $27 per person fee includes a shared camping site and trip fee only. Make checks payable to Obsidians Inc. and mail within 5 days of sign-up to: Tom Rundle\, 50 Kourt Dr. #12\, Eugene OR 97404. Cancellations on or before July 15 will forfeit $10. Cancellations after July 15 will not receive refunds. SUMMARY:Iron Mountain (shorter)
DESCRIPTION:A less-strenuous version of Iron Mountain.  Probably 4 miles and 1000.  We will be starting at a higher trailhead which cuts off much of the elevation gain.  This is listed as moderate but will be lead at an easy pace with rest stops as necessary. With good weather we should have good views of the big mountains and we should still have wildflowers.  There is the option to add a little extra and hike out toward Cone Peak if the group would like.

SUMMARY:Land O'Lakes tour
DESCRIPTION:***Note start time.******Expect warm temperatures (probably mid to upper 80s in valley)***\nThis is a nice hike into the SW Jefferson wilderness to see four beautiful lakes.  We will hike in on the PCT from Santiam Pass\, take the trail towards Santiam Lake\, then take a left towards the Berley Lakes.  There is a short 50 yard cross-country jog to the trail leading to Craig Lake\, which is reached after a short climb. This is a lovely lake with a view of the area to the south.  We can walk part way around the lake (one can walk about 80% of the way around easily\, but the last 20% is not recommended!!) We then retrace our steps out and downhill back to the trail that leads  to lower Berley Lake. This is a beautiful place with views of Three-fingered Jack.  We then will hike to Upper Berley Lake\, then go cross-country on flat ground to the Santiam Lake Trail and from there to the southern end of Santiam lake. We will then return. If the weather is really hot\, we may not do the Santiam Lake part.  Also\, if people really enjoy the first three lakes\, it is easy enough not to do Santiam.  I would look to return to Springfield by 4:30. \nNote: we are going to be exposed for a lot of this hike.  Weather models show very low probability of precipitation and temperatures are likely to be warm but not extremely hot.   \nThis is a good hike for the hiker who can do decent miles on the flat but doesn’t enjoy long steep climbs and descents. It gets to a lake not too many know about and three others that are special.  Downside is it may be crowded but if so\, Craig will have less of it.

DESCRIPTION:This is a spectacular loop from the Obsidian trailhead that includes Four-in One Cone\, Collier Cone\, Opie Dilldock Pass. Arrowhead Lake\, and Obsidian Falls. I plan on taking a short swim in Arrowhead Lake.  The last time we did this hike in took 7 1/2 hours\, so plan on getting home late. There will be a slight additional fee to cover the cost of the permit.

SUMMARY:Threemile Lake
DESCRIPTION:The trailhead is south of Florence abut 10 miles.  This is a combination trail going through old growth forest\, the dunes and along the beach.  We do see a bit of the north end of 3 Mile Lake.  At this time of year we will see some wildflowers.  I believe we will miss the salamander migration which happens earlier in the spring.  We will stop in old town Florence for coffee and a snack on are way back home.

DESCRIPTION:AS OF 7/14 WE NEED AN ADDITIONAL DRIVER \nNOTE THE EARLY START TIME (beat the heat) \nA weekday hike for those of us who prefer that. Trail info: Sullivan’s book #45. \nOn 7/14 there were few bugs and maybe 1/2 mile of the trail had some snow\, much of which will be melted by 7/22. There are several easy stream crossings. Wildflowers are good. Views are exceptional. \nThe hike is steady (but not steep) uphill going in. It crosses a small burn and a substantial lava field\, both of which can be hot and dry.  \nA moderate pace on a trail like this\, including occasional stops to enjoy the view\, is maybe 2 mph.\nFolks who want to hike faster have PCT options. \nDriving time is 1.5+ hour each way.

SUMMARY:Wild Iris Ridge
DESCRIPTION:Iris Ridge is part of the Eugene Ridgeline trail.  It was part of an old farm.  The trails use the preexisting ranch roads. They are gravel and well graded.  Early in the spring the roads are lined with iris’s.  We will see some wildflowers.  This trails  gives a good view of the coast range and Fernridge Reservoir.  Starting early with the intent of missing the heat.  We should be done by 11:30. The pace will be relaxed with chances to take in the views.

SUMMARY:Canyon Creek Meadows
DESCRIPTION:Canyon Creek Meadows offers an initially easy access to Cascade Alpine wildflower meadows plus great views of Three Fingered Jack. We will begin the hike at Jack Lake on a loop. Because of the many wildflower enthusiast that the trail is shared with we will go clockwise.  After 1.7 miles at the lower meadow we will take a spur trail to the upper meadow and to the view point saddle another 1.5 miles. Some scrambling will be required. This part of the trip is on an unmaintained trail and can be difficult in places however the last time we were there we were rewarded with some close-up views of mountain goats.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Loop counterclockwise
DESCRIPTION:NEED ONE MORE DRIVER IF EVERYBODY IS TO GO ON THE HIKE.  ***This is a good time of year to do the loop\, when there is still some water in the streams and there isn’t too much dust.  The wildflowers should be good in the meadows\, the falls should have a lot of water\, and there may be snow in the highest elevations.  Be prepared for sunny conditions with sunscreen.  Gaiters may be useful for some of the stream crossings.  Please wear hiking boots at all times unless at lunch you wish to dip your feet in the water.  The obsidian lying around is extremely sharp\, and it could cause nasty cuts where significant medical care other than first aid would be difficult.  Bring plentiful water and food.  Poles are useful to have but not required. The week before\, check the site for the weather forecast regarding thunderstorms.  This is not a place we want to be if there are any\, so cancellation of the hike is possible.  Side trips to Sunshine can be done.

SUMMARY:Mt Washington
DESCRIPTION:Mt Washington is my favorite climb in Oregon. We’ll hike in about 5 miles to the rocky ridge. We’ll pick our way across the rocky ridge to the notch. We’ll then put our harnesses on and rope up. The rock climbing section is three rope lengths of climbing. We’ll then down climb two pitches on the fixed line. The third pitch we’ll rappel off. This in an intermediate level climb. You need to have completed another mountain where you are required to rock climb like Mt Thielsen or Broken Top\, or be VERY comfortable with climbing and exposure. Count on an 11 – 14 hour day. We will drive up\, climb\, celebrate and drive back to Eugene in the same day.  Meetup/Departure Location: TBD

SUMMARY:The Wife via SW Ridge
DESCRIPTION:This will be a long day\, but the views will be amazing. You should be in TOP PHYSICAL CONDITION to complete this very demanding hike. After leaving the PCT\, we will SCRAMBLE up a 20 degree slope to the summit ridge\, gaining about 1\,800 ft. elevation in about 3.5 miles. There will be logs\, outcrops\, scree and probably patches of snow. The reason for participation limit is safety – to minimize the chances of accidentally kicking rocks down on each other. See Sullivan’s Cascades 4th ed. hike #60 for a look at the trail network NW of Devil’s Lake parking area. I want to hit the trail no later than 10 am. By consensus we will stop for big dinner celebration on the way back.

SUMMARY:Opie Dilldock
DESCRIPTION:This hike will take us up to the Collier Glacier viewpoint which I consider one of the most scenic spots in the Three Sisters Wilderness. I’m going to do this hike a bit differently this year.  We’ll be starting at the Matthieu Lakes trailhead to the PCT which will take us all the way to Opie Dilldock pass.  From there we’ll take a short unmaintained trail to the viewpoint for our lunch.   We’ll hike out the same trail except we’ll take the short loop trail that goes past North Matthieu Lake.  This is an early season hike so we could have some snow.

SUMMARY:Crater Lake with Overnight at Diamond Lake Resort
DESCRIPTION:Load bus at 7:30am at Shopko\, depart 8:00\nRoute- I-5 South to Hwy 58 Exit at Oakridge.  Coffee break at Green Waters\, Oakridge or Salt Creek at the top of the pass. Arriving at Crater Lake 10:30 to 11:00 am. We will be joined by a ranger who will narrate while we tour the rim. We will find a spot along the way to enjoy our sack lunch (Bring your own). We will leave the park at about 3:00 pm and travel to Diamond Lake Resort where dinner will be on your own. The resort has many amenities. Barbara plans to provide an outdoor breakfast on Friday morning. The trip home will include several waterfalls along the North Umpqua River and a tour of the Douglas County Museum in Roseburg. SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace.  It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule.   If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte.  Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape.  Registered guests are welcome.  \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. SUMMARY:Beverly Beach
DESCRIPTION:Beverly Beach has fascinating geological strata with gobs of fossils.  We will hike a couple miles on the beach.  There are offshore islands that seem to amplify the wave action.  after the beach walk … and lunch … we will walk the nature trail around the campground.  There are a couple dozen nurse logs and stumps with giant Sitka spruces and hemlock trees.  There are five kinds of ferns and skunk cabbages too.  The Visitor Center has good displays including a skull from a gray whale.  I expect everyone to remove some ivy from the campground trail.  After the outing\, I expect most folks will drive the extra five miles to Cape Foulweather?

DESCRIPTION:This is a hike up to great views of the Cascades from Saddle trail #3326 off of road 1993.  It will involve about 11 miles of driving on a gravel road.  As this is still early in the season it may also involve climbing over downfall.

SUMMARY:Mt McLoughlin
DESCRIPTION:This is an exploratory trip. The leader has not led it. That said\, plenty of guidebooks describe the route in detail. Also\, this is early season so snow conditions will have to be considered. I will try to get the most updated conditions before we leave Eugene. The route is not technical in nature but some scrambling on boulders may be required.\nMy plan is to leave on Sunday at noon\, drive three hours to the campground and set up camp. The climb will begin early Monday and finish Monday.  I’ve made reservations for two sites at the campground\, three people per site. Because we would miss the Monday camp checkout deadline\, I reserved a second night. Anyone not wishing to spend a second night can depart Monday upon returning from the climb but it could be late and it’s three hours back to Eugene. There are several hikes leading from the campground to nearby lakes if people do choose to stay over Monday night and hike Tuesday\nmorning. Also\, the lake is big and invites kayaking or canoeing.\nA forecast of bad weather in the area that weekend will cancel the trip.\nThe camp cost for two nights\, two sites is $54.00. SUMMARY:Tidbits Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The tidbits mountain trail winds through old growth forest and amazing vistas.   At the top are the cornerstones of an old fire lookout. The views of the surrounding hills and mountains are stunning. The best part is it’s above Blue River Reservoir so not a long drive.   Drivers be aware that there is 8 miles of gravel road. I checked the road out and it had been graded and graveled last year or so has only a few potholes.

DESCRIPTION:A fire in 2017 has opened up the trail and views making this hike a different experience than before however the view of the Three Sisters from the rocky summit is still very rewarding.  We’ll start at the Foley Ridge trailhead and have lunch on the 6300 foot summit then return back on the same trail.
