SUMMARY:Scott Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mountain Loop is one of my favorite hikes. We will hike to four lakes; Benson\, Tenas\, Hand and Scott Lakes. We will have amazing views of cascade peaks from the top of Scott Mt. We hike through old growth forests\, meadows\, the western edge of a major lava flow and one of the best picture spots for the Three Sisters.\nBring your swim suit or water shoes if you would like to take quick dip in Tenas Lake. I plan on lunch on the top of Scott Mountain. Later in the hike there is a great spot for huckleberries (hopefully they will be ripe).\nWe will likely be back in Eugene by 5 PM.\nThis is a long hike with a moderate fast pace due to the distance. If you have questions please call me.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: My hikes are leave no trace and do NOT feed the animals. The first is obvious\, but sometimes people think throwing apple cores is acceptable. It is not. The second is bad for the animal\, giving it food that is not healthy for it\, causing obesity and early death\, encourages approaching of people\, with subsequent biting\, is a nuisance to others\, and treats wild animals like a petting zoo in which we are in control. Enjoy your snacks\, enjoy the hike\, and enjoy the animals\, as they all are. We are visitors to their home. I know others feed them\, but not on my hikes. \nObsidians are responsible for picking up litter in the upper part of the trail. We have a couple who are great doing it\, but anybody is welcome to help. Maybe consider bringing a plastic bag for anything you see. \nIf this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street. s from Canyon Drive Street sign with the hiker symbol.

SUMMARY:Diamond Peak: PCT and Mt. Yoran trails
DESCRIPTION:To make this a one-way hike we will do a key exchange and divide into two hiking groups. Joel Greer will lead one group and Steve Adey the other. \nOne group will start at the Vivian Lake trailhead (by Hemlock Butte) on W side of Diamond Peak. They will hike E on the Mt. Yoran Trail\, past Divide Lake\, and then N on the PCT to the trailhead by Pengra Pass near Odell Lake. See Sullivan #97\, Divide Lake and #95\, Midnight and Yoran Lakes. \nThe second group will do the reverse\, starting at the Pengra Pass PCT trailhead by Odell Lake and hiking S on the PCT and then W past Divide Lake to the Vivian Lake trailhead. \nTheoretically we will meet in the middle. And find a vehicle at the exit point.

DESCRIPTION:We will park at base of Cape Perpetua. We will hike along the Devils Churn and down to the Blow hole. We will cross back under he highway via tunnel and continue back to the trail to a extremely large cedar. The last thing we will do is climb the trail to the top of Perpetua for view. SUMMARY:Rigdon Lakes
DESCRIPTION:This is a hike that William Sullivan added back to the top 100 Hikes of the Central Cascades. The trail starts along Waldo Lake and then turns North to venture around the Upper & Lower Ridgon lakes and Lake Kiwa. About 70% of this area burned in 1996 but is coming to life with new young trees now 4-12 feet tall. The treasure of this hike at this time of the year are HUCKLEBERRIES. Hopefully ripe -we will snack along the way. Bring a container to fill at our lunch stop. We will also stop for a swim in Waldo Lake. We should be back to Eugene around 5 PM.

SUMMARY:Brice Creek
DESCRIPTION:(FYI: This was from your last Brice Trip including Trestle falls) \nBrice Creek is a beautiful drop and pool creek with fast running water this time of year. Trestle Falls\, upper and lower\, are on a side loop trail at the beginning of the hike. This is where most of the elevation gain will be.Wild flowers should be going strong. The loop trail brings us back to the main trial and we continue on along the creek for the rest of the hike. This is a car shuttle. We will leave a car at the bottom to carry drivers back to the top.

SUMMARY:Vivian Lake from Salt Cr Falls
DESCRIPTION:We will begin at the Salt Creek Falls Observation Site and Picnic Area\, hike past Diamond Creek Falls and Fall Creek Falls\, and stop for lunch at Vivian Lake. We will return the way we came\, except at Diamond Creek Falls we will take the other side of the loop that leads back to our starting point at Salt Creek Falls. There will be plenty of time for photographs of the pretty waterfalls and Vivian Lake. Scouting notes from August 7: very shady overall\, generally well marked trail but some ambiguous trail junctions. Ripe huckleberries in several places. Need mosquito repellent. SUMMARY:Blueberries & Hatchery via LTD
DESCRIPTION:Hi all! I am looking forward to our small group exploration. The weather will be warm in the afternoon–in the 80’s. We will be near the McKenzie\, and doing most of our activity before 3 PM. \nI plan on bringing an 8 cup container and a 4 cup container which fit into my day pack. The farms will hold our berries if we decide to loop back to pick the harvest up. I will bring freezer baggies in case we need them. \nThe Plan:\nMeet 8:05 AM “G” Station at LTD Downtown Eugene.\nDepart LTD Bus # 91 McKenzie River at 8:20 AM\nReturn 4:30 PM LTD Bus from Leaburg\nArrive at 9 AM U-Pick Blueberries at Organic Redneck Farm. Use a buddy system—price break at 10 pounds. Berry system will last til mid August. Then walk upriver along the Leaburg Canal to the EWEB dam and Fish Hatchery.\n11 AM Tour at Leaburg Fish Hatchery. EWEB has been required to lower the water in the Leaburg canal. How has this impacted local fisheries?\nAfter lunch near the Leaburg reservoir and Dam\, we will follow the canal levee downriver to Greenwood Drive. We will walk along Greenwood Drive. Here we are closer to the river. We have several choices of what to do. Small Mom and Pop farms have more berries and lavender for sale. \n3:30 PM We have a choice to stop at a boat landing or to tour a second Salmon Fish Hatchery to hear about the impact of canal hydrology and spawning salmon. If we tour the Salmon Fish Hatchery\, we will catch the bus at the Hatchery at about 4:30. I am bringing bright bicycle vests for safe walking to HWY bus stop. It is really a short distance. \nBring your curiosity and questions about our foods and fish and nearby rural community.

SUMMARY:Broken Top
DESCRIPTION:Broken Top is a gorgeous climb\, I think the prettiest in Oregon by far. It has a long\, but beautiful hike in\, then a fun\, slightly exposed ridge\, then we put our harnesses on and do a little bit of climbing with a LOT of exposure. Fun\, fun\, fun.\nTo climb Broken Top you need to be in excellent hiking shape and very comfortable with exposure. That 17 mile round trip is no joke.\nYou have the choice of driving over to the trail head the night before or the morning of the climb. We’ll hike away from the trailhead at 4:30 or 5am. Meetup/Departure Location: TBD

SUMMARY:Obsidian Lodge Deck Rehab
DESCRIPTION:Note time – 3PM. We will be placing of polymeric sand to top and seal the gaps we partially filled with gravel on Tuesday. I don’t know how many people we can keep busy with this\, but if we have an excess of volunteers there are weeds to pull and other odd jobs. Also I left my pressure washer up at the Lodge to finish up the handicap parking pavers – if someone would like to do this\, contact me and we can discuss. If anyone would like to mow the grass (and weeds)\, that is needed again.

SUMMARY:Scott Mountain/Benson Lake
DESCRIPTION:This is a varied trail\, climbing to beautiful mountain lakes and then on up to Scott Mountain\, for lunchtime views of the Cascade peaks. We’ll descend through an interesting area that mixes forest\, a burned area\, lava flows before emerging next to Hand Lake to complete the loop. The mountaintop lunch spot has little-to-no shade\, and mosquitoes are sometimes a problem\, so please be prepared for both–but it’s a beautiful hike.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Lodge Deck Rehab
DESCRIPTION:We will be hauling gravel in 5 gallon buckets\, placing and compacting it in the gaps in the concrete deck on the east side of the Lodge where the pressure treated wood has rotted out and where the deck is pulling away from the Lodge. This is in preparation for placement of polymeric sand (hopefully Thursday Aug 1) to top and seal the gaps. I don’t know how many people we can keep busy with this\, but if we have an excess of volunteers there are weeds to pull and other odd jobs. Also I left my pressure washer up at the Lodge to finish up the handicap parking pavers – if someone would like to do this\, contact me and we can discuss.

SUMMARY:Matthieu Lakes/4-In-One shuttle
DESCRIPTION:Should be a nice day in the high country Monday\, 5 to 10 degrees cooler than in town. A week ago the bugs in this area were minimal. \nThis will require a short (10 mile or so) car shuttle between trailheads. We will enter via the Matthieu Lakes Trail (#50 – Sullivan)\, head south\, often following the PCT\, and exit past Four-In-One Cone on the Scott Trail (#46 – Sullivan). The hiking mileage and elevation change are approximate and depend on how ambitious people want to be at Yapoah Crater and Four-In-One Cone. The uphill hiking is generally moderate and the Scott Trail section is level and downhill. There are open sections with potentially intense sun. \nTiming: I estimate a leisurely pace of about 2 mph\, a couple of stops\, and lunch puts us on the trail for 6 – 7 hours. Plus driving and shuttle time.
