We’ll hike in about 5 miles to the rocky ridge. We’ll pick our way across the rocky ridge to the notch. We’ll then put our harnesses on and rope up. The rock climbing section is three rope lengths of climbing. We’ll then down climb two pitches on the fixed line. The third pitch we’ll rappel off. This in an intermediate level climb. You need to have completed another mountain where you are required to rock climb like Mt Thielsen or Broken Top\, or be VERY comfortable with climbing and exposure. Count on an 11 – 14 hour day. The leader has not led it. That said\, plenty of guidebooks describe the route in detail. Also\, this is early season so snow conditions will have to be considered. I will try to get the most updated conditions before we leave Eugene. The route is not technical in nature but some scrambling on boulders may be required.\nMy plan is to leave on Sunday at noon\, drive three hours to the campground and set up camp. The climb will begin early Monday and finish Monday. I’ve made reservations for two sites at the campground\, three people per site. Because we would miss the Monday camp checkout deadline\, I reserved a second night. Anyone not wishing to spend a second night can depart Monday upon returning from the climb but it could be late and it’s three hours back to Eugene. There are several hikes leading from the campground to nearby lakes if people do choose to stay over Monday night and hike Tuesday\nmorning. Also\, the lake is big and invites kayaking or canoeing.\nA forecast of bad weather in the area that weekend will cancel the trip.\nThe camp cost for two nights\, two sites is $54.00. Hiking on the first two sections of the trail will give us the opportunity to see the completed “root wad” repair work from the snow storm. Depending on the weather and the stamina of the group\, we may divide into two groups. The hardest part is the uphill on Blanton Heights section when we return to our cars. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. Thielsen. The route begins as a use trail up the scree and talus of the lower mountain\, later becoming a class 3 scramble as the ridge steepens. The final climb up the summit pinnacle is a class 4\, easy 5th class scramble on the only solid piece of rock on the mountain. We will plan on doing the climb in 1 day from Eugene. However\, those who wish to camp can meet us at the trail head in the early AM. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an amazing view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake\, an unusual lake\, partly formed by a lava dam. There will likely be some long patches of snow on the PCT. Gaiters\, trekking poles and water resistant footware are highly recommended. BE PREPARED FOR MOSQUITOES ON THE FIRST 1.5 MILES FROM THE TRAIL HEAD. Lunch stop at top and return on same trail. Meet behind McDonalds on 58 th to car pool. This is the upper end of Bill Sullivans Shotgun Creek & Horse Rock as listed in his book.
