SUMMARY:Macduff Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This hike will be 87th anniversary of placing a brass plaque on Macduff Mt to honor Nelson Macduff\, a former forest service supervisor and Obsidian member. The trail is a beautifully engineered trail up a steep ridge through a shaded forest floor to the peak with bountiful wildflowers and the great views of Sawtooth Ridge and a clear view on the summit of the Oregon Cascades from Mt Hood to Diamond Peak. SUMMARY:Blanton Heights to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:I’ll point out two places where the phantom orchid is blooming.  Hiking on the first two sections of the trail will give us the opportunity to see the completed “root wad” repair work from the snow storm. Depending on the weather and the stamina of the group\, we may divide into two groups. The hardest part is the uphill on Blanton Heights section when we return to our cars. If anyone would like a shorter trip and want to leave their car at the 52nd and Willamette Trailhead before our departure time \, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net We can figure something out.\n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette.  At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette.  Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive.  Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road.  Turn left on Blanton.  The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest.  In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Mt Thielsen - Graduation
DESCRIPTION:We will be climbing the standard route on Mt. Thielsen.  The route begins as a use trail up the scree and talus of the lower mountain\, later becoming a class 3 scramble as the ridge steepens. The final climb up the summit pinnacle is a class 4\, easy 5th class scramble on the only solid piece of rock on the mountain.  We will plan on doing the climb in 1 day from Eugene.  However\, those who wish to camp can meet us at the trail head in the early AM.

DESCRIPTION:There are profusions of various wildflowers on this hike and some views too. We will stop and admire them. We will not go to the top as described in Sullivan’s book – there is no view there. Instead\, we’ll have lunch in the meadows where it is considerably more interesting and beauteous. SUMMARY:Yapoah Crater
DESCRIPTION:This classic Obsidian hike will take us up a short section of the PCT to South Mathieu Lake and some excellent views of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an amazing view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake\, an unusual lake\, partly formed by a lava dam. There will likely be some long patches of snow on the PCT. Gaiters\, trekking poles and water resistant footware are highly recommended. BE PREPARED FOR MOSQUITOES ON THE FIRST 1.5 MILES FROM THE TRAIL HEAD.

DESCRIPTION:Horse Rock Trail upper end with extension of 1 mile on service road to second transmission tower to overlook Coburg and valley from top of Coburg Hills. Scouted last week. some Poison Oak in area\, and lots of varieties of wild flowers and wild strawberries.  Listed hike as moderate due to some step areas with loose gravel \,poles advised. Lunch stop at top and return on same trail.  Meet  behind McDonalds on 58 th  to car pool. This is the upper end of Bill Sullivans Shotgun Creek & Horse Rock as listed in his book. This will be a leisure hike with stops to enjoy the flowers and pick and eat some wild strawberries

DESCRIPTION:Load Bus at 7:30 AM\nFor a small town\, Cottage Grove has a lot to offer. Did you know that Cottage Grove is the covered bridge capital of Oregon\, with six covered bridges? At the Chambers Railroad Bridge\, we will read interpretative exhibits describing Cottage Grove’s lumber mills and logging industry. At the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum\, we will learn about the 1863 gold rush. The Cottage Grove Museum\, located in an octagonal-shaped former church\, contains hundreds of historical artifacts. Cottage Grove was the location of Buster Keaton’s 1926 silent film classic\, The General; Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine in the 1973 film\, Emperor of the North; the parade scene in the cult comedy\, Animal House; and the railroad track portions of the 1986 coming-of-age film\, Stand by Me. We will view many beautiful murals\, including one of Opal Whitely\, Cottage Grove’s most famous citizen\, who you likely never heard of. \nLunch is on your own at one of several restaurants and brew pubs in the historic downtown. Or bring a sack lunch to eat in the park. Sometime after lunch we will visit Sanity Chocolate to learn about the process of making chocolate. SUMMARY:Trans Crescent Mt.  w/Car Shuttle
DESCRIPTION:W \nThis is a chance to hike across the top of Crescent Mountain from the south and end up at the north trailhead\, by S. Pyramid Creek.  It is an interesting hike with initially descending 150’ over the first mile to Maude Creek\, then climbing significantly to the meadows\, where the wildflowers should be great.  There is always a chance of blowdowns\, but this mountain has been worked a little (by me) and a lot (by a couple out of Sisters).  Lunch will be on top\, with views from Mt. Adams to Diamond Peak.  We will then descend on the north side\, through woods\, with some up and down\, past an open area with good views of Jefferson and Three-fingered Jack\, down to a nice creek and up to the cars.  The shuttle is just over 9 miles back to the south trailhead.  It can qualify for a moderate hike on the basis of distance\, but the climb out of Maude Creek is significant although the trail is good.  If there are crowds on the south side….well\, there probably will be fewer on the north\, judging by what I saw.  The hike needs 3 cars for 8 people and 4 for any more up to 11\, which is the maximum.  \nNOTE: if there aren’t four cars\, we can only take 8. If there are only two cars\, we can only take 5.

SUMMARY:Middle Sister
DESCRIPTION:We will be doing the North Ridge Route on Middle Sister.  The climb will involve an approximately 5.5 mile hike in from the Pole Cr trail head on Saturday June 15\, then camp and get up early Sunday to climb.  Previously on the hike in we have not needed snow shoes and some people have preferred to ski.  Our high camp (~7200’) will not likely have water so we will plan on melting snow though hopefully we’ll find a site where we don’t have to camp on snow.  On Sunday we will get up early (4:30 AM) and head for the summit. There is one steep portion of the climb above the saddle between Middle and North\, and we will set a fixed line there for safety.  After summiting we’ll come back to camp and pack up and hike out.

SUMMARY:Koosah Falls around Clear Lake
DESCRIPTION:We will park at the trailhead for Koosah Falls and hike east past Sahalie Falls. After crossing the highway we will make the loop around Clear Lake and head back to Koosah Falls.  The main elevation gain is the 1.5 miles to Clear Lake and then relatively flat around the lake.  The pace will be moderate. The plan is to stop for lunch at Clear Lake Resort using their picnic tables.  The resort store should be open for snacks.

SUMMARY:Crestmont Landtrust Complex
DESCRIPTION:This pleasant hike through a pastoral setting west of Corvallis connects Benton County’s Fitton Green Natural Area with a wooded parcel owned by the Crestmont Land Trust\, a private nonprofit whose mission ranges from conservation and habitat restoration to environmental education and outdoor recreation. We’ll amble past  the Mary’s River\, take our time to read the interesting interpretative signs\, and eat lunch with a fine view of the foothills of the Coast Range and Willamette Valley. DESCRIPTION:This is a classic\, nearby hike with a great pay-off – relatively short drive\, longer hike\, great views\, and lots of wildflowers.  You can see the entire Cascade range from the top (former fire station lookout)- from Diamond Peak to Mt. Hood. Bill Sullivan’s book has this hike listed\, but it’s from two different trailheads\, although the Lost Creek trail is shown in faint print.\nThe Obsidians did this hike on 5/19 and saw only the early flowers – calypso orchids\, fawn lilies\, and OR grape. Others should be in full bloom 3 weeks later. A quote from someone who hiked it on 6/5 and posted on the Alltrails site: “What an amazing vista\, a beautiful day and the panorama full of the highest Cascade peaks. Simply stunning. Go\, now!”

SUMMARY:South Sister - Prouty Glacier
DESCRIPTION:The Prouty Glacier on South Sister is a great introduction to traveling on a glacier as part of a rope team.  This alternate route up South Sister provides a much different perspective than the standard route.  We’ll hike in on Saturday to Green Lakes and spend a short night.  We’ll get an ‘alpine start’ Sunday morning so that we can be on the summit of South Sister before the glacier warms up.  We’ll then make our way back down to Green Lakes via a climbers trail to pack up camp\, hike back out to the trailhead\, and drive home all in the same day. \n Meetup/Departure Location: ShopKo Coburg Rd/Chad Dr\,(btwn ShopKo & Taco Bell)

DESCRIPTION:Wild flowers may be a bit delayed this year due to heavy snow pack. I will get reports a few days early for snow pack and weather. If there is a heavy snow pack\, or nasty weather\, I may decide to reschedule for the following week. We will hike at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops for water\, snacks and photography.

DESCRIPTION:Meet at the bocce ball area of the park at the corner of 24th Avenue and University Boulevard.   \nIt’s University of Oregon Tree Appreciation Week\, June 3-8.  Come appreciate the trees together.  \nWe’ll walk to UO Campus to view up of 25 different trees there.   The walk will be very slow with up to 25 stops to look at each tree and information on posters made by students from Whitey Lueck’s Trees Across Oregon course. \nWe’ll start at Straub Green\, west of Straub Hall and south of the EMU\, and if you wish to meet the group there at 9:30 instead of at the park\, let me know. \nWe’ll walk rain or shine.  Bring usual water\, snacks and prepare for any weather.

DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace.  It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\,  email summertrips@obsidians.org.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte.  Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape.  Registered guests are welcome.  \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. SUMMARY:House Rock
DESCRIPTION:Departs from: Springfield\, Winco Parking lot\, I-105/Mohawk. 1920 Olympic Street\, Springfield. This gives us easy access to get on I-105\, take Mohawk exit to Marcola\, Mohawk Valley and to Sweet Home.It is another 25 miles on Highway 20 to House Rock Campground between milepost 54 and 54 where there is a small hiking trail parking lot.   We will start by crossing the footbridge to see the historic cave and waterfall. The short trail down to the waterfall is rocky and can be slippery (optional)  We will continue on the Santiam Wagon Road .6 mile to gravel road #2044  and then  follow the directions in Bill Sullivan’s Central Cascades book up to the knoll viewpoint.
