DESCRIPTION:We will go up the Gate Creek Trail to the viewpoint at 4800′ with views of Three FingerJack\, Mt. Washington\, and the Three Sisters.  Then continue along the ridge by a less well maintained path and a short cross country meadow route to reach the summit\, where we shall lunch with a 360-degree view that encompasses Mt. Jefferson\, the South Santiam Canyon\, and the entire route of the hike.\nWild flowers should be abundant.  This is a good one.

SUMMARY:Diamond Peak - Graduation
DESCRIPTION:Diamond Peak is a good introduction to non-technical snow climbing.  At 8750 ft\, it is the tallest mountain in the Willamette Pass area.  We will be climbing via the Pioneer Gulch route\, which is 8 miles round trip and almost 4\,000 ft of elevation gain.

SUMMARY:McKenzie - Sahalie to Tamolitch
DESCRIPTION:This is one of my favorite stretches of the McKenzie River Trail.  We will park at Koosah Falls and hike east to Sahalie Falls then loop around the back side down to Carmen Reservoir. The trail continues behind the reservoir and wanders through old growth forests sticking close to the river and includes some river wetlands.  We will loose the river as it goes under an obsidian shelf to meet us at Tamolitch Falls/Pool also known as Blue Pool.  After a leisurely lunch we will hike back to Koosah falls.  This part of the trail has far less foot traffic than going to Tamolitch from Trail Bridge Reservoir.

SUMMARY:Hardesty Mountain
DESCRIPTION:I scouted this on Memorial Day\, and other than 4 small blowdowns\, step-overs or go-unders\, it is clear.  What is remarkable are the wildflowers all along the trail: Inside out\, rhodies\, whipplea\, and at the top large carpets of oxalis\, with fawn lilies\, Shelton’s violets\, snow queen\, bleeding hearts\, and even Oregon grape blooming at the top.  The trail is not as muddy as it can be\, but it still climbs steadily.  I’m starting early\, because I need to be at the Lodge at 2 pm for Trails Day.  This isn’t the double black diamond one\, because we can’t even find the Eula Ridge Trail at the bottom under the blowdowns. Still\, it is a superb conditioning hike close to town.  Plan on a break at Crale Creek Road about 40% of the climbing done. From there\, it is steady but really nice.  I plan on clearing at least two if not three of the four hazards\, but other than that it should be a good hike.

It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace.  —not like the other hikes on our schedule. DESCRIPTION:Hiking on the first two sections of the trail will give us the opportunity to see the some of the “root wad” repair work from the snow storm (Scorpions\, Obsidians\, and Eugene Parks and Open Space).  Depending on the weather and the stamina of the group\, we may divide into two groups.   The hardest part is the uphill on Blanton Heights section when we return to our cars. If anyone would like  to leave their car at the 54th and Willamette Trailhead before our departure time \, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net   We can figure something out. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette.  At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette.  Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive.  Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road.  Turn left on Blanton.  The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest.  In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Central Oregon Explore
DESCRIPTION:SPACE IS OPEN FOR ONE PERSON – SIGN UP!\nThis is a 3-day experience into Central Oregon’s Outback that includes learning about early human habitation\, geology\, and the Pleistocene. Our route will include the archaeological site of Fort Rock Cave\, the 2-mile long volcanic fissure known as Crack in the Ground\, and the Fossil Lake area. The last third of this trip is exploratory.\nWe will depart Eugene and enjoy a short rest at Salt Creek Falls before continuing to the curious 3-sided vertical-wall formation known as Fort Rock. Fort Rock was once an island on an ancient lake and smoothed area from wave action can be seen on its walls. We will hike for about 2 miles exploring this curiosity. On our way out\, we’ll visit the local Homestead Museum and learn about how the area’s modern water supply has affected more recent history. Our camp is 15 minutes away\, there are showers\, a small store\, and (if allowed) we will be able to enjoy a fire. The nearby area is open space with trails. Being the Friday of the Memorial Day Weekend this campsite might be busy\, bring earplugs. \nThe next morning we will visit the rarely seen Fort Rock Cave with an interpretive guide. Only about 100 members of the public get to see this cave every year and our group has tickets! It’s at this cave where 9\,500-year-old sandals were discovered\, and it was once thought to be the oldest site of human habitation in the western US. In the afternoon we will drive to Christmas Valley to resupply as needed then off to “Crack in the Ground” an ancient volcanic fissure. The fissure is over 2 miles long and in places 70-feet deep. In the late afternoon\, we’ll drive about ten miles to a rustic ranch to camp. That evening we’ll tent camp under the stars listening to coyotes. The area is remote and off-the-grid\, electricity will not be available\, but there are water and an outhouse. There are a couple of friendly\, but large ranch dogs that will be wandering around.  We will have a fire if conditions allow. The moon will be waning gibbous with about 60% illumination. \nOn the third day\, we drive less than 10 miles to Fossil Lake. During the Pleistocene\, this area was part a vast lake. Today\, this high desert region is important because of fossil evidence from the many animals that once swam in the lake and walked its shores.  It is in this area that a racetrack of 43\,000-year-old mammoth tracks was uncovered in 2017. Our visit to the area will include 2 to 3 miles of walking. There will be little to no shade\, bring sun-gear. In the afternoon we return to Eugene\, the plan is to be home by dinnertime. \nTrip Departure:The departure location will be e-mailed to participants closer to the trip date (it will be in south Eugene).\nCamping & Ticket Fees:\nReservations have been pre-paid by the trip leader. Participants need to pay $40 (includes\, 2-nights of camping fees and coveted tickets to Fort Rock Cave) to the trip leader at the beginning of the trip.  Admission to the Homestead Museum is additional \nMileage & Carpool:\nWhile most of the roads are paved about 40 miles will be on dusty roads. Driving mileage has been determined by Google Maps\, however\, we will be using backroads for parts of the trip and estimating mileage is not always accurate. Please allow for some flexibility with odometer readings and bring a few extra dollars to have on hand to voluntarily reimburse the drivers.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah Wildflower Festival
DESCRIPTION:Park at the North Parking Lot.\nThe Mt. Pisgah Wildflower and Music Festival show starts at 10:00 so we should not have a problem parking at the North Trailhead where we will head out for the North Bottomlands\, Trail 3 and eventually arriving at the summit around 10:15.  Mileage is an estimate depending on weather and participants. Directions to North Trailhead: Instead of turning right to the usual meeting place at yellow fee box\, turn left after crossing the bridge spanning the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and proceed a 1/4 mile to a gravel parking area. A sign kiosk indicates the North Trailhead. You will need a Lane County Park pass. There is no fee box at this parking lot. If you want to attend the flower show\,  the suggested donation fee is $10.00. I recommend that you pay online (easy) and print your ticket.

DESCRIPTION:Hike the Lost Creek trail to the junction between Sawtooth Rock & Mt. June\, continuing to the summit of Mt. June.  As of 4/22 there were still several patches of snow across the trail in the upper reaches of Lost Creek and the ridge at Sawtooth junction.  I have not scouted the trail from Sawtooth junction to the summit of Mt. June. Numerous groups were hiking it April 21 though\, so it’s definitely open.

The Siltcoos is located south of Florence in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. The Siltcoos is relatively flat and a fun way to experience one of the largest expanses of temperate coastal sand dunes in the world.  The river is three miles long and a designated canoe trail.   We’ll be keeping our eyes open for otters and a variety of birds. Bring water\, snacks\, lunch\, and dress in layers. Come prepared for the weather. This trip is with the River House Outdoor Center in Eugene. Please meet at 9 am at 301 N. Adams St.\, Eugene\, to take care of pre-trip logistics. We will return to Eugene by 5:30 pm. The price is $55 per person (please bring cash or check)\, payable to the River House on the morning of the trip. We will be riding on a small bus to the Siltcoos.

DESCRIPTION:From the trailhead we will hike through small pine stand into a meadow\, then along a gently rising grassy ridge. Our destination will be an eroded volcanic vent and radial dyke that erupted roughly 30-36 m.y.a. If we are lucky\, there will also be a few early wildflowers and a good view of the South Willamette Valley. Slow pace\, many stops for water\, snacks and photography.

SUMMARY:Hinsdale Rhodie Gardens and Wild Rhodies
DESCRIPTION:Load Bus at 7:30 AM\nRoute- I-5 South to Drain Exit- Hwy 38 to the Dean Creek Elk viewing area.  A coffee break will be provided along this route. A shuttle bus will meet us at the viewing area to deliver us to the gardens. We have a private viewing of the gardens until about 10:00 am when we will be shuttled back to our bus and proceed to Cleawox or Woahink Lake for our sack lunch (bring your own). After lunch we will travel North to the Washburne beach area and rest stop for a short beach walk and more rhodies. On the way home to Eugene\, we re-track on Hwy 101 to Florence and make an ice cream stop. We will travel to Eugene via Hwy 126\, arriving at approximately 6:00 pm. \nALL BUS TRIP PARTICIPANTS MUST COMPLETE A MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM FOR CURRENT YEAR. DESCRIPTION:Note 8:00AM start time.   We will be doing routine maintenance (mowing\, weed whacking\, weeding beds) to get things spruced up for the ExploraTalk that evening.  If we have enough volunteers we will continue  dressing and expanding of the planting beds.  We could also do blackberry clearing to expose native growth  in various areas around the Lodge.

SUMMARY:David Thompson\, Explorer/Surveyor
DESCRIPTION:Gordon Sayre\, UO English Professor and Obsidian member\, has a special interest in the exploration and cartography of North America. His explorer talk will feature David Thompson\, a late18th/early 19th century man who\, like David Douglas\, recorded his findings. While Douglas was a botanist\, Thompson surveyed\, traveled and published maps of the Northwest. He navigated the entire length of the Columbia River in 1811. By the time of his death in 1857\, David Thompson had covered nearly 80\,000 miles on foot\, on horseback and by canoe.

DESCRIPTION:This is a classic hike that winds along the Little N. Santiam River and Opal Ck\, passing old-growth groves\, waterfalls and emerald pools along the way.  We will pass what remains of Depression era mining operations and will loop back through Jawbone Flats\, the site of the Opal Ck Ancient Forest education center.  Opal ck is a exceptionally lush and lovely trail.

SUMMARY:Willamette Confluence Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The Willamette Confluence features extensive habitats that are endangered in the Willamette Valley\, including six miles of river corridor\, floodplain forest\, wetlands\, upland oak woodlands and native prairie. The Nature Conservancy is working with partners to reconnect the river to its historic floodplain across 20 ponds in this former gravel mining site. This 6-mile\, 3-hour walking tour (9AM-12PM) with volunteer docents (and other community members\, up to 24 on tour) will take us around the preserve. Tour will include some steep uphill and downhill sections\, walking on uneven ground\, and crossing a slow flowing creek that may be up to a foot deep.\nParticipants : no one under 18 per Confluence regulation

SUMMARY:Heceta Head/Beaver Lake
DESCRIPTION:From Washburne Park we will walk south on the beach to the Hobbit Trail\, and from there up over Heceta Head to the lighthouse for lunch. Some may want to take the lighthouse tour and explore this famous historic landmark. After lunch we will hike back over Heceta Head and take the Valley Trail past Beaver Lake to Washburne Park. We will be walking a slow pace and stopping several times to look at some amazing geologic features.
