SUMMARY:Wallowas/Elkhorn Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Come join us on November 22nd in a hiking and climbing presentation on the Wallowa Mountains. Jeff Carr and Ela Schmidt are currently working on their climbing guidebook for that region and would like to share those experiences with you. If you have ever wanted to hike in the Oregon Alps\, then this will be an evening well spent.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Grounds
DESCRIPTION:This work party will focus on new plantings for the Lodge grounds. We will create a new planting bed above the Lodge with Oregon grape and sword ferns\, add a smaller bed in the parking area with red-twigged dogwood\, plant 3 or 4 giant sequoia in the far parking island and plant a Port Orford Cedar that Dave Predeek has grown from a cone and is donating to the Obsidians. Other than Dave’s cedar all the plantings have been collected from my property. If we have adequate help and time\, I hope we can gather some of the fall leaves both as mulch for the new plantings and to remove from grass areas so we don’t kill the grass over winter.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email wintertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.\n   To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street.

SUMMARY:Larison Rock
DESCRIPTION:This is a nice low elevation trail through the woods and the periphery of the Deception Complex burn to Larison Rock\, which has nice views to the south. It is close in\, so the drive is not long. The hike is short\, but the climb is significant although spread out throughout the hike. It is\, however\, a MB trail\, so it likely is to be in decent shape. We probably will be back to LCC by early afternoon (2-3).

The focus of this trip is the Museum of Natural and Cultural History Condon Collection of Fossils. SUMMARY:Blanton Heights to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. Shorter options might be considered. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Loop
DESCRIPTION:Last Call High Cascades: NOTE TIME. *** We will go counterclockwise if there are views\, because the upper parts of the trail with views are northbound. If it is foggy\, we will go clockwise\, since it won’t matter. There is a significant likelihood the hike may be canceled due to snow\, road closure\, or significant rain on hike day. Please bring warm weather gear\, including warm hat\, gloves\, gaiters\, and decent rain gear and boots. Walking poles are not a bad idea given the possibility of snow on the trail. Most see this trail in sunshine with wildflowers; seeing it in snow and fog is also nice. I’d like to finish no later than 3 given the early sunset. NOTE: Daylight savings time ends that night\, so there is NO time change for this. It is not a home football weekend\, either.

SUMMARY:North Bank Habitat
DESCRIPTION:Canceled because of no sign ups. This is one of my favorite hikes. The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg\, exit 135\, Wilbur\, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas\, meadows\, and views of the Umpqua River. Hopefully the fallen trees have been removed since April 13 when I hiked it last. One will need to watch for poison oak. Expect a few muddy sports but it might be dryer than usual. We should start hiking around 10:00 and complete the hike around 3:00. It will be a steady moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks or two lunches. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice.

SUMMARY:Halloween Cemeteries Walk
DESCRIPTION:Update. Change of Meeting place is Tugman Park. Park on Hilyard Street near 38th Street. Dorene and I scouted the route: Start up through Tugman Park to Brae Burn to an obscure nature trail up to Westhaven Cemetery. Then backroads and another secret path to Mary Lane— entrance to Calvary Cemetery. Crossing Crest Drive to trails at the back of Wayne Morse Farm and amble our way back to Tugman Park. Optional lunch at nearby Tradewinds . Not sure of mileage or elevation but there are some up hill sections with unmaintained trails. There are bathrooms at Wayne Morse Farm.

If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. SUMMARY:Mt Pisgah & Mushroom Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Mt. Pisgah Mushroom show starts at 10:00 so we should not have a problem parking at the North Trailhead where we will start the hike on Trail 3. Mileage is an estimate depending on weather and participants. Some may choose to depart for the festival at various intersections. Directions to North Trailhead: Instead of turning right to the usual meeting place at yellow fee box\, turn left after crossing the bridge spanning the Coast Fork of the Willamette River and proceed a 1/4 mile to a gravel parking area. A sign kiosk indicates the North Trailhead. You will need a Lane County Park pass. There is no fee box at this parking lot. I plan to hike on the back trails to the top and eventually make our way down to the mushroom festival where we can view and eat lunch. If you want to attend\, the suggested donation fee is $10.00 I recommend that you pay online (easy) if it is available. mountpisgaharboretum.com/festivals-events/mushroom-festival-2019/

SUMMARY:Proxy Falls and Linton Lake
DESCRIPTION:This should be a beautiful hike in the forest with the fall leaves changing. We will first start at proxy Falls and then drive to the Linton lake trail head. Not sure if we will bushwhack up to Linton Falls or just see the lake. The group can decide.
