SUMMARY:Castle Rock via King Castle TH
DESCRIPTION:This trail climbs to the site of an old lookout (now replaced by a cell phone relay) with a nice view of the McKenzie Valley\, the Old Cascades\, Mt. Washington and the Three Sisters. The well-graded trail passes through a pleasant forest of Douglas fir and mountain hemlock. After 4 miles\, the trail crosses a road\, then switchbacks another 1.7 miles up a forested slope to the ridgetop and rocky summit. Weather permitting\, we will have good views with our lunch. We will proceed at a steady\, relaxed pace and pause periodically to keep the group together. Notes: Mountain bikers may be sharing the trail. There are no restrooms at the trailhead. If poor weather is forecast\, I may substitute a hike at Mt. Pisgah. A stop at Takoda’s Restaurant is an option after the hike.

SUMMARY:West Metolius River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Find out why the Metolius is known as “Oregon’s most magical river.”  We will start this gentle\, out-and-back hike at Lower Canyon Creek Campground and turn around when we hit the “Private Property” sign\, after about 3.65 miles. The trail stays beside the river for nearly the whole time\, and along the way we’ll see springs gushing into the river\, maybe ouzels\, fall foliage (we hope) and the gaping mouths of a fish hatchery. \nAfter completing our downstream/upstream river hike\, we’ll drive to the Head of the Metolius River for a quick walk (.5 mile RT) to pay our respects to the source of this beautiful river.  Those who wish to can go on into Sisters for an optional dinner somewhere cute\, although with the days getting shorter it will mean a long drive home after dark. \nTechnically\, this should be labeled an Explora hike\, because I’ve never done it\, but it’s a heavily trafficked trail that looks pretty straightforward\, so I think we will be OK.

DESCRIPTION:Easy beach walk from Florence’s North Jetty to Driftwood Shores beach where we will walk through a giant labyrinth that will be carved in the sand. The public walk through begins at 5:00 p.m. Low tide will be at 5:15 and sunset will be at 6:30 p.m. The event is free to attend and will be held rain or shine. SUMMARY:Finn Rock Reach with MRT
DESCRIPTION:McKenzie River Trust (MRT) representatives will join us as we explore work that has been conducted at Finn Rock Reach. The 278-acre property which was acquired by MRT in 2015 features 2 miles of McKenzie River front property with channels\, ponds\, and wetlands ideal for area habitat. Fire activity in 2020 created an opportunity for enhancement of salmon and other fish habitat. We will wander the area viewing the improvements and tour the wetland area. We estimate returning to the Eugene/Springfield area by 2-3 PM \nDue to the recent work in the area\, trails may be rough and uneven\, so hiking poles are advised. \nObsidian COVID-19 protocols will be followed. Those carpooling masks will be required\, and participants should be vaccinated.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road.  We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead.   This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette.  At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette.  Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive.  Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road.  Turn left on Blanton.  The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest.  In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll park at Maiden Peak Trail head #3681 near Gold Lake and hike 5.8 miles to Maiden Peak. It will be a mix of gentle grade and steeper\, with a stretch of rubble rock near the top. After a break and view\, we’ll descend for 3 miles and take the PCT south for .7 miles to the Maiden Peak Shelter\, and relax again. From here it’s 3.5 miles back to the trail head.

DESCRIPTION:This is our first restoration and stewardship project at the North Bank. We will be doing clipping/digging blackberry and ivy removal from trees. Some of volunteers would take on picking up some of the “micro” garbage that was left after the major cleanups. SUMMARY:Pioneer Cemetery Walk
DESCRIPTION:A  SECOND TRIP HAS BEEN SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 4 AT 1PM. \nHistorian/storyteller Randy Gudeika will lead a 2 mile walk through Pioneer Cemetery\, Wednesday October 27\, 1 to 3pm.  At this historically invaluable site he will tell haunting stories of tragedies\, forgotten wars\, murder\, as well as intriguing Eugeneans.  This will be his 16th individual walking tour of old areas of Lane County since 2018.  His walks are based on extensive research\, are factually true\, and entertaining.  Meet at the cemetery side of E 18th & Potter\, across from Central Lutheran Church \nthis walk is a saunter around the cemetery\, not a conditioning  hike\, and there will be periods of standing and listening so feel free to bring layers to keep warm! \nYou may wish to offer Randy a voluntary honorarium of up to $5 which is what he customarily receives when leading tours for the public.

SUMMARY:Champoeg State Park
DESCRIPTION:A long\, but flat hike through an area rich with Oregon history. We’ll do the eight mile Heritage loop at Champoeg State Park. The first provisional government of Oregon was formed in here in 1843 and it was the site of a small\, but once-thriving town that was washed away during the great flood of 1861.  What remains is a beautiful park along the Willamette River that’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Part of the time we’ll be on a flat bike trail that will take us past Oregon’s oldest continuing operating store in Butteville.\n     Optional side trip after the hike to Aurora\,  8 miles away.  Aurora was a founded as a religious colony in the mid-1800’s.  It thrived – then collapsed 20 years later.  Aurora’s now a charming town that’s home to the Aurora Colony Museum\, bakeries\, and antique stores.

SUMMARY:Cemetery Saunter
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Tugman Park\, south Eugene\, on Hilyard Street\, between 37th and 38th.\nWe will saunter from Tugman Park making our way gradually uphill through the neighborhoods to 46th St and Brae Burn Drive. After several very steep uphill blocks\, we will then hike up a short but steep dirt trail through the woods to the back side of the cemetery on Willamette St. We will skirt the cemetery via a dirt path. We will then have several short bursts of very steep up and down hill while we make our way through pedestrian connector pathways through more neighborhoods to get to the cemetery on Crest Dr. Then we will saunter down through the woods on a packed gravel and paved path behind the cemetery and eventually make our way back to Tugman Park through yet another neighborhood. Most of this saunter will be on pavement but keep in mind if it is wet\, the steep parts may be slippery and the dirt paths will be muddy. If that is the case\, hiking poles are a good idea. The restrooms at Tugman Park are now closed but there is one at Safeway on 40th.

SUMMARY:Thurston Hills Vista Loop
DESCRIPTION:North Trail Head parking lot off Main Street in East Springfield.  You will see the entrance on the right just past Springfield Memorial Cemetery.\nThere is a brand new loop added off the summit of the existing trail.  It has amazing features and vistas.  It just opened but will not be advertised to the public until next year.  This will be a one-way hike with shuttle.  I will ask three cars to meet me ahead of time at the trail head off Bob Straub and ride with me to the east trail head.  Then we can shuttle the group back.  Because it’s so cool\, I am offering this hike two different times.

SUMMARY:Mt Yoran- Halloween Costume
DESCRIPTION:This is a Halloween costume climb of Mount Yoran.  We will first scramble up the main mountain not in costume since it is a class 3 rock climb and so requires hands as well as feet.  After downclimbing that we will hike over to the adjacent peak and have our Halloween costume party on top.   \nIf you do not wish to climb Yoran\, but want to participate in the costume event\, you can wait at Divide Lake and we’ll pick you up to go scramble up the adjacent peak\, which is non-technical.

DESCRIPTION:We can adjust mileage if the weather does not cooperate.  Park at the Main Parking lot. Look for us two or three rows below the fee box.  We will head out on the lower road and then along the river to the North Trailhead and then take Trail 3\, 4\, 1 to the summit. SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road.  We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead.   This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette.  At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette.  Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive.  Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road.  Turn left on Blanton.  The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest.  In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 8:15-8:30.   NEXT WEEK SWITCH TO 9AM START\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time.            (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.) Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. SUMMARY:Pioneer Cemetery Walk
DESCRIPTION:Historian/storyteller Randy Gudeika will lead a 2 mile walk through Pioneer Cemetery\, Thursday\, November 4 \, 1 to 3pm.  At this historically invaluable site he will tell haunting stories of tragedies\, forgotten wars\, murder\, as well as intriguing Eugeneans.  This will be his 16th individual walking tour of old areas of Lane County since 2018.  His walks are based on extensive research\, are factually true\, and entertaining.  Meet at the cemetery side of E 18th & Potter\, across from Central Lutheran Church. this is a saunter around the cemetery\, not a conditioning hike. there will be standing and listening so you may want to bring layers to keep warm. You may wish to offer Randy a voluntary honorarium of up to $5-$10 which is what he typically receives when offering tours to the public.  Not required\, optional.

DESCRIPTION:To take in slowly\, perhaps with photography\, whatever fall color remains midway through autumn\, we’ll walk up to the “Meadow” and turn right onto the trail toward Fox Hollow. We’ll turn around at the huge fallen Douglas-fir that fell across the trail in the ice storm of Feb. 2016.  Bring binoculars\, in case we encounter birds\, chickarees (https://animalia.bio/douglas-squirrel)\, and magnifier lenses for tiny wonders.  May take 1 1/2 – 2 hours. SUMMARY:Salmon River Ramble
DESCRIPTION:This is a low-elevation late-fall western-cascade river-bottom backpack through enchanting primeval old-growth forest along the pristine Salmon River. The Salmon River itself is precious and rare in that it is an unusual nursery for all native Trout\, Steelhead\, King\, Coho and Silver Salmon. Depart\, Friday afternoon\, 2.5 hour drive to Salmon River TH near Zigzag OR. Hike upriver approx. 3.5  miles to basecamp. Saturday\, day hike the river up-and-back approx. 10 miles through impressive monumental forest passing a half-dozen ethereal wonderous waterfalls. Sunday pack up & hike out.

DESCRIPTION:Updated: Rain is predicted so there are some alternatives to hike with there are more trees and to head down once on the summit. Park at the Main Parking lot but MEET by the BATHROOMS across from the Pavilion. From there we will take Trail 5\, Trail 56 and then Trail 6 to the summit (3.5 miles).  On the way back we will hike down on Trail 2\, Trail 46. and up Trail 4 to Trail 3\, and Trail 7. Then on to the North Trailhead and returning along the river. Please be familiar with the COVID protocols on the website. Allow 3 1/2 hours. We can adjust if weather does not cooperate. This is like climbing Pisgah twice.

SUMMARY:Thurston Hills Vista Loop
DESCRIPTION:North Trail Head parking lot off Main Street in East Springfield.  You will see the entrance on the right just past Springfield Memorial Cemetery.\nThere is a brand new loop added off the summit of the existing trail.  It has amazing features and vistas.  It just opened but will not be advertised to the public until next year.  This will be a one-way hike with shuttle.  I will ask three cars to meet me ahead of time at the trail head off Bob Straub and ride with me to the east trail head.  Then we can shuttle the group back.
