SUMMARY:Low Tide Wanders
DESCRIPTION:UPDATED APRIL 25th: Instead of Boiler Bay on Saturday\, because getting the tide pool area is treacherous\, we will drive 1 mile north to Fogarty Beach are explore the beach and tide pool area there.\n====== \nEnjoy exploring tidepools during two negative low tides on the Oregon coast. We will be group camping at Beverly Beach State Park\, just north of Newport. \nThursday\, Jun 16\, 2022:\nIn the later afternoon or early evening\, arrive at Group Camp #2 at Beverly Beach State Park. Check-in at the park begins at 4pm. The leader should be arriving by 6pm\, but you are welcome to check in earlier. \nFriday\, Jun 17\, 2022:\nThe low tide is 9:29am. In the early morning (7am)\, we will drive 30 minutes south to Seal Rock and explore tidepools during an impressive -2.4 feet (-73 cm) low tide. This area is good for tidepooling as we can walk on sand\, visit ‘islands’ of marine life\, and not crush critters underfoot. After several hours\, about 10am when the tide is coming in\, we will return to the group camp. The rest of the day is open for exploring on your own or going as a group on some local hikes. \nSaturday\, Jun 18\, 2022:\nThe low tide is 10:20am. In the early morning\, we pack up camp (by 8:30am) and drive 15 minutes north to Boiler Bay State Park and explore this area during a -1.8feet (-55cm) low tide. The “path” down to the tide pool area is steep\, and if we have to make other arrangements at a nearby location we will. This part of the trip is exploratory by the group leader. After several hours we will finish up. \nPay the trip leader $20 upon arrival; this covers camping fees\, and wood for a fire (if allowed at that time). This trip begins at Beverly Beach State Park\, Group Camp #2. The park does have flush toilets and showers\, though our group will likely be sharing a communal pit toilet with another group. Covid protocols will be in place on our trip. \nBring your tent\, camping cookstove\, meals\, snacks\, etc. Be prepared for wind\, rain\, and cool temperatures on the coast. The moon will be a Waning Gibbous with 87% illumination\, if the wind is not an issue we might be able to include an evening low-ish tide walk on the beach. The trip leader is fully vaccinated and boosted.

This relatively steep\, .5-mile section climbs the final 550 ft. to the summit. There may be a few downed trees to climb around and over\, and possibly some mud\, along the way. Weather permitting\, we will have nice views with lunch. Wildflowers seem to be a bit late this year and I’m hoping for interesting blooms both in the forest and at the summit.

SUMMARY:Grassy Mountain Explora
DESCRIPTION:This is an easy hike close to town. The hike is mostly on gravel roads\, except for the last short section through forest to the summit of the mountain.\nOur destination is mostly undisturbed by human activity\, and has almost zero invasive plants growing in it. Because of this\, we need to make sure that our hiking shoes are completely clean\, and we do not carry any seeds on them.\nAnother request is that people who hike this trail do not bring any other groups of people to the location\, and not post anything about it online that prompts people to visit the area.\n Meetup/Departure Location: Albertsons\, Marcola Road & 19th St. Springfield

DESCRIPTION:We will be climbing the standard route on the south side. It is moderately steep snow and will involve an overnight of camping at around 9000 feet. We’ll drive up early Sat\, hike up to high camp\, then get up at o’dark thirty and climb\, descend\, hike out and drive home. It’s a big day for sure…about 6 Pisgahs…but at higher elevation.

SUMMARY:Cape Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This an exploratory trip. I have hiked a 10 mile loop but intend to do less then this. We will take the trail to the top. We will also do a lower trail to a native dwelling that was rehabilitated in 1927. This is an area at the north end of Florence not hiked by Obsidian very often.

SUMMARY:Macduff Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This will be the 91st anniversary of the placement of the brass plaque on Macduff Mt commemorating Nelson Macduff\, a former Obsidian member. This year I plan on hiking the long route up Macduff. Our route will start at the Saddle trailhead where it switchbacks up to the saddle between OLeary and Horsepasture. From here we’ll head east past McLennan Mt to Macduff. While the total elevation gain of this trail is 1800 feet because of the terrain the accumulated gain is over 3000 feet so be prepared for a long day. I did this hike two years ago in the rain and have decided that if it rains this year I’ll switch to the shorter route to Macduff which is only 5 miles. A stop at Takodas restaurant after the hike will be an option so check with your driver.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Misery Ridge & River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Smith Rock State Park is our destination. This is a scenic & fascinating hike every foot of the trail. Many rock climbers & an occasional slack liner in view along the way. We’ll hike up the east face to the top of the rock – lots of steps & quite steep in sections. Good balance & at least one walking stick are required. We’ll loop over the top & down the west face which is steep\, gravelly & slippery in spots – walking stick{s} will help. We’ll continue down to the Crooked River which loops around the south end of the rock and back to the trail head – the last couple of miles are mostly level.

SUMMARY:Mt. St. Helens Area South
DESCRIPTION:This is an exploration of some highlights of the southern side of Mount St. Helens. This trip begins at the Cougar Park & Campground on Yale Lake\, Washington.\nHere is the location of Cougar Camp where the trip begins:\n46.05473855631972\, -122.28760091134596 \nJune 28:\nArrive at the Cougar campground late that afternoon or evening (sites\, 22\, 23\, and 25 are reserved). The trip leader should be arriving there by 4pm. \nJune 29:\nIn the early morning\, we drive about half an hour to Lava Canyon for a 5.5-mile out-and-back hike along a mudflow scoured chasm with 1\,400 feet of elevation gain. There will be waterfalls\, ancient lava cliffs\, and some ladders that will need to be climbed. The suspension bridge is closed\, but apparently\, we can still see the other side of the canyon by backtracking about 0.3 of a mile. Depending on time and weather\, we might visit June Lake that afternoon (shorter loop of 2.6 miles with 410 feet of elevation gain)\, or if time allows\, hike the longer loop (5.4 miles with 1\,000 feet of elevation gain) over to an ash-choked waterfall called Chocolate Falls. In the evening\, we relax back at the campsite. \nJune 30:\nIn the early morning\, we pack up camp and travel to the Ape Cave Interpretive Site. Ape Cave is the longest lave tube in the western hemisphere. We will explore the easier 0.8 (one-way) lower cave first. Then later\, the 1.4-mile long upper cave where will need to scramble over rock falls\, several 8-foot lava walls using hand/footholds\, and exiting via a metal ladder. Refer to Bill Sullivan’s Ape Cave description of this hike for more information. There is the option to visit the Trail of Two Forests Interpretive Site\, a short .25 mile-long boardwalk trail that leads you over 2\,000-year-old lava flow from Mount St. Helens where an ancient lava flow solidified around the trunks and trunks rotted away\, leaving tree wells\, voids in which the impressions of the bark. The plan is the be on the road by 2pm and through Portland by 4pm to avoid major traffic\, returning to Eugene by 6pm-ish. \nTrip fees total $30 total per person: this includes the $2 Obsidian trip fees and $28 payable to the trip leader (first day of the trip) for two nights camping\, up to 4 vehicles for the group\, and two bundles of firewood. Bring all your meals\, tent\, camping stove\, hat\, sun gear\, etc.\, and all your food. There is a shower and restroom where we are staying. BRING TWO LIGHT SOURCES for the cave. The cave is 42 degrees so come prepared with a warm hat\, jacket\, and some good foot protection. Bring your all-in-one Federal public lands pass for vehicles. The possibility of a campfire will be determined at that time. Bring your swim trunks\, but the lake we are staying near is prone to algae blooms and the lake might be closed to swimming. Parking space at the campground is limited\, you are highly encouraged to carpool with a friend who is also going on this trip. We are limited to 1 car and 2 tents per site. Any extra vehicles\, beyond our budget 4 total\, will be charged $5/day. Covid protocols will be in place. The trip leader is vaccinated and boosted.

SUMMARY:Pre's Trail
DESCRIPTION:After work in-town hike: Easy\nMeet at Alton Baker Park – on Day Island Drive\, right after crossing the bridge. It’s the parking lot on the left nearest the duck pond and the disc golf course. If unsure of this location\, please call/text me. We leave promptly at 6:00 pm. \nThis trail is named after UO legend Steve Prefontaine. Thought it would be fun to do in advance of the World Meet in July. Although there is no elevation gain\, the 4.4 miles does take some stamina. Trail is a mix of hard pack dirt and asphalt. If you have any questions\, please text/call me.
