SUMMARY:Matthieu Lakes/Yapoah Crater
DESCRIPTION:8/5 update: Extra permits available this morning. Participant limit now 12 people.\nThis is one of my favorite hikes along the PCT! The tentative plan for the hike from Lava Camp Trailhead includes\, 1) after 3 miles\, a brief stop at lovely S. Matthieu Lake for snacks and views of N. Sister; 2) after 2 interesting miles on good tread through the lava beds\, the trail climbs to the shoulder of Yapoah Crater for views of lava flows\, Mt. Washington\, and beyond; 3) an optional scramble up the fine scree slope to the impressive rim of Yapoah Crater; 4) lunch on the return to Yapoah shoulder; 5) on our return\, another brief rest stop at S. Matthieu Lake; 6) continuing down on the old Skyline Trail\, an optional swim in N. Matthieu Lake before completing the final 2.4 miles to the trailhead. We will proceed at a steady\, relaxed pace\, with plenty of opportunities to enjoy the landscape\, geology and plants\, and to take photos. To best enjoy it\, be prepared for a long day with double lunches and double water. Bring the 10 essentials and appropriate gear for wind and cold\, sun and heat\, and possible rain. Send me an email if you have questions.

SUMMARY:Spencer Butte from Fox Hollow
DESCRIPTION:Start early to avoid the heat and crowds. It is very peaceful on top of the Butte. \nMeet at the Fox Hollow trailhead parking area across from the Raptor Center. The round trip at a steady pace takes around 2 hours. \nIt is interesting to see the repairs on the Tie Trail and to enjoy the shady trail. \nIf you need a longer hike\, it would be easy to continue hiking on the Ridgeline Trail to Dillard or beyond.Meet at the Fox Hollow trailhead parking area across from the Raptor Center. The round trip at a steady pace takes around 2 hours.

SUMMARY:E2C Tire Mountain West
DESCRIPTION:We will meet at the Pisgah Public Market in Pleasant Hill. Many of you may have done Tire Mountain from the other side and wondered where the rest of the trail went. Here’s you chance to find out. Starting from the west we will be just a few steps away from another part of the E2C–Winberry Divide.\nScouted the trail on 7/12. The Forest Service has completed a new bridge which Carla and I crossed. Poles came in handy in some parts of the trail. This is mainly a biking trail and some switch-back turns can be steep and slippery.

SUMMARY:Hunts Cove
DESCRIPTION:I put Hunts Cove as the name of this hike but we WILL shorten it to just Pamelia lake or walk around to PCT junction. The PCT is closed from this junction (mile ~2027) on the Willamette National Forest to near Triangle Lake north of Olallie Lake (~mile 2048.7) on the Mt. Hood National Forest. We might meet some folks coming out to civilization. Whatever we do we have to stay together under the under the permit rules.\n 7/12 reports of lots of trees down on the trail to Hunt’s Cove. From Emily Rice 8/7: The blowdown was about average on the main Hunts Creek trail up to the jct with trail that goes to Hanks and Hunts Lake. Only about 6 spots that we needed to hike around\, crawl under or heave our bodies over trees. The trail to the lakes was the challenge. We counted 16 spots over 1/4 milet that required extra effort to negotiate. It probably added at about 30 45 minutes to the hike each way. None of the trees had been cut out by a trail maintenance crew although someone had trimmed some branches off to make the climb over the log a little easier. \nOnce at Hanks Lake\, the creek crossing was another major challenge. Definitely needed some flexibility and strength. The main camping spot iat Hanks s a giant mess of blow down. The trail from Hanks to Hunts Lake has just few trees to crawl over or go around. \nThe entire trail was a wonderful experience for us\, but I can’t say I would recommend it as a day hike. People need to be able to contort their bodies to get around\, over and under many of the clusters of logs and branches. And the ending at the lake is not so great.

SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 7:45-8.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. It is a great way to get and stay in shape. If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is the first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. Registered guests are welcome. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. (Please scroll down to read all of this trip description.) Everyone is required to CARRY A FACE COVERING and know how to use it properly. More information is available on the website. Look for Covid-19 Protocols. If you are not willing to follow the guidelines\, please do not join the group. To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 8:15-8:30.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte.

SUMMARY:Tam McArthur Rim
DESCRIPTION:Carla and I will be staying in Sisters so others will have to meet us there. I would suggest you do the same . I’d like to be at the trailhead about 9 am. That would mean a 5:30 am start from Eugene. The best views on this hike are with the morning sun shining on Broken Top and the Sisters. Your choice to seek lodging\, camp\, or drive from Eugene. We’ll meet at the city park in Sisters at 8:30. :NOTE: If you want something in this area a little more challenging\, Steve Johnson will cover Tam McArthur Rim and continue on to Broken Top Crater on Sept 9.
