SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trail head is on your left in about ½ mile. Do not turn left on Southpointe Dr. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: Flexible departure time from 8:15 to 8:30.\nEvery Wednesday since 2013 we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace—not like the other hikes on our schedule. If this is your first time on this Obsidian conditioning hike\, or hiking to Spencer Butte\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. If you should fall too far behind\, the leaders reserve the right to have you not summit but wait and return with the group. The regulars on this hike have attained their fitness by showing up consistently and slowly improving. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Come a few minutes early because we leave promptly at the listed time. To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please contact the leader if you have any questions.

SUMMARY:Amazon Creek Tree Planting
DESCRIPTION:This activity is on Sat.\, Jan. 21st\, it is weather dependent so leader will keep in touch with you if the planting is cancelled.\nWe are partnering with SE Neighbors on this project. The trees will be planted along E. Amazon and W. Amazon.\nWhat: 100 bare root trees provided by the city include: alder\, choke cherry\, bitter cherry\, and cascara. All of these are suited to that part of Amazon Creek\, and all are shorter stature so would be less likely to impact nearby powerlines in the future.\nWhere: The 100 trees will be spread out throughout the reach from Snell to 30th\, with approximately 65 between Snell and Fox Hollow\, 125 or so between Fox Hollow and 30th. Another 10-20 will be planted on the East side. They will be planted linearly but there will be gaps where there are already mature trees.

SUMMARY:Redtop Mountain
DESCRIPTION:The Obsidians have been leading ski trips up Red Top Mountain since 1940\, the era of the Snow Trains which sometimes unloaded at Crescent Lake. Nowadays\, with splitboards and AT bindings\, it has become quite a popular destination. Please bring climbing skins that fit your boards\, although in good snow conditions it is possible to climb up using fish scales or pattern bases. If the snow is deep our group may ski down the steep shots to the north side of the mountain and pass Pretty Lake on the way out. We usually ski up for about 3 hours and down for at least 90 minutes.

SUMMARY:First Obsidians Blood Drive -January
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: This is the same event just removed from Obsidians online signup. Due to Obsidians online system limitations (unable to hold signup active throughout the month) I have reposted same “event” and moved names from old signup sheet to this new one.\nSo\, once again…. Happy New Year Friends!\nIn memory of my Mom I have created the First Obsidians Stewardship Blood Drive.\nMy mother’s name was Nada (1932-2019) which means Hope in Croatian. I can’t think of a more fitting name to connect Obsidians\, Community\, Stewardship and my memories. SUMMARY:InTown Mixed Media Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Shadow Wood Park by the picnic bench. This park is close to the base of Dillard off of East Amazon.\nHike a figure 8 on a variety of trails\, roads and sidewalks from Shadow Wood Park to Hendricks Park and back. We will be on a trail in the Skyliner Park (below Baldy)\, the Ribbon Trail\, and other trails that I don’t know the name of. We will be on gravel and mud trails\, roads that are gravel\, or don’t have a sidewalk\, or have a spacious sidewalk. Wear high vis because a few of the roads have no sidewalk (although they are low traffic). We end the hike on a downhill note. There will be hills early on and in the middle of the hike. This hike should be fine in the rain!

SUMMARY:Groundhog Day Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Masonic Cemetery at 25th and University near the interpretive signs and gate—not at the Abbey. From there we will walk through the Cemetery to hopefully see the snowdrop flowers and a groundhog\, then on city streets to the Ribbon Trail\, by the Obsidian Lodge\, Hendricks Park and back to our cars. Be prepared for a steady uphill push for the first 30-40 minutes. Bathrooms at Hendricks Park. Update: We will only do the hike once —not do it again as in the movie\, Groundhog Day. Depending on time\, optional lunch or snack at a place to be decided by the group. \nEmail me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions.

SUMMARY:Prairie View Loop @ Ikenick SP
DESCRIPTION:This snowshoe came out of my comment several years ago that “Somebody ought to do something about these trails here.” Both of the Ikenick loop trails were unable to be completed because the diamond markers were no longer present. While Prairie View loop has no view of prairie\, is flat and on roads a good deal of the way\, it goes through some nice meadows (maybe prairie) pretty woods\, by several flowing streams\, and is not known by most people as a loop. Ikenick is often bypassed for whiter pastures\, but opening this loop was worth the falls\, dropped gloves\, wrong turns\, face plants caused by blackberry vines in summer\, that sort of stuff. Those doing it will be among the first to have completed the loop in a long time. This is a solid moderate snowshoe that requires one be able to go a bit over 6 miles on a low elevation track.
