SUMMARY:Cottonwood Canyon State Park
DESCRIPTION:This is Oregon newest state park.  It sit along the John Day River 12 miles southeast of Wasco Oregon and 10 miles from the Columbia River Gorge.  I have been here twice so I am familiar with their very basic trail system.  This is composed right now of the existing old ranch roads running along both sides of the river.  The last time I was there I extended my hiking using animal trails to the top of the canyon.  I also started exploring side canyons which I intend to do more of on this trip.  In late April we should be seeing wildflowers and several kinds of migrating birds.  There are a large number of raptors in the area including Golden Eagles.  There are also Big Horn Sheep in this area.  I saw 6 the last time I was there.  The CG has great showers\, no quarters needed.  I consider this and exploratory trip.  You need to be comfortable off trail on rocky terrain.  We will be using both the ranch roads\, very easy\, and exploring more difficult ground.  I will be calling everyone who signs up to discuss any question or concerns.

DESCRIPTION:Hike from Cummin’s Creek parking area up Pacific Coast Trail tto U.S.F.S. Visitor Center for snacks and break. Hike up Cape Perpetua for spectacular views of ocean and shoreline. On a clear day one can see about 25 miles out over the Pacific. After lunch\, hike an easy 3 mile loop on Cook’s Ridge through old growth Siitka Spruce. Return to vehicles for possible coffee stop at Devil’s Churn – optional by consensus. 0.3 miles round trip. There are some amazing geologic dikes an sills intruding the Eocene/Oligocene base rocks.

SUMMARY:Weyerhaeuser Haul Road
DESCRIPTION:Departure location: Pisgah Public Market parking lot in Pleasant Hill – 35851 Hwy 58. Take the Oakridge exit off of I-5. After 4 miles watch for the Mall on your left right after the 76 gas station. Park in the middle of the parking lot by the light pole.\nThe old Weyerhaeuser haul road starts in Thurston and goes all the way along Fall Creek to National Forest. For this hike we will do the section between Wallace Creek Rd and Hill Creek Rd. It’s a one lane logging road not used anymore by logging trucks but by walkers\, runners and bicycles. This part is mostly paved. We will have forest and rock outcrops on one side and a lovely view of the valley between Jasper and Lowell on the other side. Near the beginning of our journey we will stop at a Wallace Pioneer Cemetery dated from 1853-1858.

SUMMARY:Delta Ponds Birding
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at the north end of the Green Way Bridge in the Valley River parking lot.  This is a leisurely hiking and birding trip around Delta Ponds.  In 2018 we identified 24 bird species and a couple early blooming wildflower species.  We saw one pair of Canada geese with goslings.  This is a leisurely outing that takes about 3 hours. SUMMARY:Kalapuya Talking Stones
DESCRIPTION:Scattered through the Whilamut Natural Area in Eugene and nearby Springfield are 15 boulders deeply etched with words from the Kalapuya language. These Talking Stones help to remind visitors the Kalapuya people are still here. The words were chosen to reflect natural things in the traditional landscape\, such as a fish trap\, wooded area\, a camas field. We will be visiting all of the stones on our walk. \nThis is a meandering walk starting from the main parking area at Alton Baker Park; meet at the parking lot’s south end. The route will be clockwise into Springfield\, then along the river and back to the parking area. Dress for the weather. We should be completed by noon.

SUMMARY:North Bank Deer Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Update on trail conditions from Roseburg BLM  office: It is not closed but according to those on horseback\, there are some fallen trees.  BLM would like to us to send  a report  after our trip.       The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg\, exit 135\, Wilbur\, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas\, meadows\, and views of the Umpqua River.  One will need to watch for poison oak. Expect a few sections of the trail to be really muddy. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike between 2:30 and 3:00. It will be a steady moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice. If weather conditions are not optimal\, I’ll substitute a hike on Pisgah. The hike is described in Sullivan’s Southern Oregon hiking book.

SUMMARY:The Oregon Coast Aquarium
DESCRIPTION:LOAD BUS AT 7:30 am\nThe Oregon Coast Aquarium is the focus of our early spring trip to the Oregon coast. We’ll visit the sea lions\, seals. otters\, assorted other creatures(large and small) and the colorful coast birds beginning their annual breeding plumage. We’ll go via Corvallis with a coffee stop at Avery Park.  We’ll be able to observe some animals during their feeding time. Knowledgeable volunteers are at the otter\, seal lion/seals and aviary.  They have stories to tell about their “creatures” and can answer questions. The large gift shop is a shopper’s delight.  Lunch will be on your own at the Aquarium restaurant. Before leaving Newport we’ll drive around the area near the aquarium to see the developing OSU marine science campus and NOAA (National Oceanic Atmospheric Association).  We hope to visit the NOAA research vessel as well.  Leaving the area we’ll return down the coast looking for returning whales swimming north. SUMMARY:Deception Creek
DESCRIPTION:Here’s a chance to see some serious trail clearing work. The lower elevation trails along Hwy 58 have so may trees down that sometimes the trail can’t be seen. But here’s a spot to walk through a freshly cleared trail. Obsidians Mike Smith\, Larry Dunlap\, and myself spent time on the crews that did this work. Hopefully\, I can describe what was in the now clear path. (I’ll have a few pictures). We will be able to park at the Forest Service Center parking lot and start our hike from there. If people are interested in seeing some of the mess that remains\, we might make a quick stop at the Hardesty Trails Area. As I understand it\, you don’t have to walk far before you see the problems the Forest Service and their volunteers are facing.

DESCRIPTION:This trip is one I did last year.  It has a series of three water falls you pass as you hike the loop trail.  The last one is the most impressive.  If the weather is good we may include a side trip to Ankeny Wildlife Refuge on the way back. We will be driving up I-5 to the exit for Hwy. 22 and following that east to our trailhead. DESCRIPTION:We will use a car shuttle to facilitate the hike of the Ridgeline Trail from Blanton to Spring trailhead. A great way to hike the entire Ridgeline trail  and to see the storm damage and wildflowers.  A steady pace with up and downs. Please check if you can drive. DESCRIPTION:This will be a trillium hike on the last day of spring break.   They are just beginning to bloom on the Ridgeline Trail.  The pace will be “almost” moderate with time to spot and enjoy the trillium—but not get out your flower identification book. SUMMARY:Dimple Hill
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location:  We will meet in the Jerry’s Home Improvement Center parking lot\, Beltline at Highway 99\, at the far side of the parking lot from the store\, next to Highway 99 and the Jerry’s sign. \nThe hike will begin at Chip Ross Park on the north side of Corvallis.   Weather permitting\, there are good views of Corvallis from the upper reaches of Chip Ross Park.  We’ll take Dan’s Trail to the summit of Dimple Hill and stop for lunch and (hopefully) good views to the south.  Most of Dan’s Trail is a long and steady uphill\, with plenty of switchbacks to keep it from becoming too steep.  The trail is muddy in places\, but generally in good condition.  Although rated moderate according to distance and elevation gain\, some hikers may find it difficult.

DESCRIPTION:Update: Last week Jim changed the reservations to 19. Jim Northrop who lived in Salem for 24 years will be our guide for our walk. There will be a guided tour of the Capitol Dome at 11:00. Other sights  depending on time: Riverfront Park\, Union Street Railroad Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge\, the new Peter Courtney Minto Island Bridge\, Supreme Court Building (hopefully)\, sculptures\, and gardens on the way to Willamette University\, the Deepwood Museum & Gardens\, the Bush Barn Art Center\, the Salem Convention Center\, and the historic Ladd and Bush Bank.\nBe prepared to be on your feet most of the exploration. Jim has a special place for lunch.  We should be back in Eugene by  5:30 if all goes well.
