DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location:  We will meet in the Jerry’s Home Improvement Center parking lot\, Beltline at Highway 99\, at the far side of the parking lot from the store\, next to Highway 99 and the Jerry’s sign. \nThe hike will begin at Chip Ross Park on the north side of Corvallis.   Weather permitting\, there are good views of Corvallis from the upper reaches of Chip Ross Park.  We’ll take Dan’s Trail to the summit of Dimple Hill and stop for lunch and (hopefully) good views to the south.  Most of Dan’s Trail is a long and steady uphill\, with plenty of switchbacks to keep it from becoming too steep.  The trail is muddy in places\, but generally in good condition.  Although rated moderate according to distance and elevation gain\, some hikers may find it difficult.

SUMMARY:Bend Oregon Explore
DESCRIPTION:This trip will involve exploring downtown Bend on foot (with an emphasis on its history)\, hiking 2 miles of the river trail\, and visiting the High Desert Museum.  The trip leader needs to refresh his knowledge of Bend\, Oregon\, in preparation for a Road Scholar trip. Participants are welcome to offer their knowledge of the city. If time and weather allow we might make a stop on the last day to learn about the Big Eddy rapids. Our accommodation will be 1 night in a hotel. We will be walking up to 5 miles per day. \nSCHEDULE:\nTuesday\, March 26\nDepart Eugene and drive to Bend. We will explore the downtown area\, shops\, eateries. In the late afternoon\, we will check into our hotel then hike the 2-mile trail near the hotel. F dinner\, enjoy eating at a restaurant in old town. There will be free time that evening to continue seeing the town or enjoy the amenities of the hotel. \nWednesday\, March 27\nIn the morning we’ll scout out a few more places in downtown Bend and possibly stop by Bend’s history center.  In the early afternoon\, we’ll visit the High Desert Museum and if time/weather allows we’ll visit the area near Sunriver on the Deschutes called the Big Eddy. We should return to Eugene by dinner time.  \nDEPARTURE INFO:\nOur group will depart from Eugene on Tuesday\, March 26th at 8:30 am. The exact address will be sent to the trip participants closer to the departure date. Street parking will be available for people who leave their cars. \nGEAR:\nBe prepared for rain and cooler temps. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring money for food and beverages. \nACCOMMODATIONS:\nWe will stay at the Fairfield Inn & Suites in Bend. The trip leader will provide information about how you can reserve with the hotel to get a group rate. Participants are responsible for making their own hotel reservations.  RESERVATIONS AT THE HOTEL NEED TO BE MADE BY MARCH 8th. After that day the special rate is based on availability at the hotel. Cancellations can be made up to 48 hours before arrival.  The hotel is close to the river trail and a 15-minute walk from downtown.\nCOSTS:\nThe group rate is $129 per room.  Each room has two queen beds and includes breakfast\, wifi\, use of the pool\, and parking. This price does not include a 12% tax.  If you wish to share with another participant consider splitting the cost.

SUMMARY:Leaburg Canal
DESCRIPTION:Easy walk along the Leaburg canal starting at the power station 13 miles east of Thurston.  This level path follows the canal approximately 3 miles east with pleasant views of the surrounding farms\, river\, side creeks\, and canal.  Expect to see a variety of waterfowl.  The path is covered in small pea gravel and is generally not muddy\, but due to the gravel\, you may find hiking boots more comfortable than a soft-soled shoe.

She was a well known American poet in touch with the “march of the seasons” who  died in January. SUMMARY:Drift Creek Wilderness from the North
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE: Warm and dry predicted.   \nTIDES: High at 0935 Low at 1638. \n(St. Patrick’s Day) \nThis is a chance to hike in one of the lesser visited wilderness areas from one of the lesser used trails.  This is a pretty area; however\, here are reasons you might NOT want to do the hike.  Yes\, sometimes it is worth making sure people know upfront what they are signing up for: \n1.  It is a long drive\, a good two hours each way\, past Newport to the south and then a 15 miles on FS roads.\n2.  For the drive\, it isn’t a long hike\, about 8 miles RT\, maybe closer to 7.5.\n3.  I will be taking pictures of blowdowns and removing some of the smaller ones.  I am scouting it for the annual early April log out done by the Scorpions of the three trails that go down to Drift Creek. We are only hiking one of those three trails on this date.\n4.  That’s right\, the hike goes DOWN 1400’ to Drift Creek\, so one is hiking out uphill. \nThat said\, the area is pretty\, not crowded\, and Drift Creek is pleasant\, and if you “collect” wilderness areas\, as I do\, this is one of the 47 in Oregon.  It is 50-100 yards to the other trail destinations across the creek\, but it is about 6 hours of driving and hiking to get there if the water is high\, and it will be!! \nBring good rain gear. Despite the 15 month drought\, the coast range gets rain that the valley does not get  There are no stream crossings\, and Drift Creek itself is not easily reached from the end of the trail (which ends in a campsite)\, but the trail may be muddy\, and gaiters are recommended.  I got real wet on it last year. The gradient of the trail is steady but not severe.  Walking sticks are useful.   \nI hope to be at the Trailhead by 10\, at the bottom for lunch\, out by 1:30 or so and back in Eugene before 4.   NOTE THE CHANGE IN THE STARTING TIME.

(The Siuslaw National Forest is home to one of the oldest archaeological sites along the Central Oregon Coast. Tahkenitch Landing\, seven miles north of Reedsport\, provides intriguing insights into how humans responded to a changing environment between 8\,000 and 3\,000 years before present along the central Oregon Coast.)\nAfter presentation we will hike 1 mile back to our cars. DESCRIPTION:This outing offers varied backcountry terrain with excellent views when the weather is clear of Three Fingered Jack\, Mt. Washington and the Three Sisters.  \nPLEASE NOTE. Participants must be comfortable using parallel or telemark techniques to descend steeper slopes. Contact the leader prior to the trip if you are uncertain about the skills required to safely enjoy this outing. Drivers are in scarce supply for winter trips. DESCRIPTION:Update as of March 4th.  The Mayor just announced on Facebook that Ridgeline Trail was closed.  Instead of the Lodge\, we will meet at the Mill Park in Springfield\, 200 S Mill Street where it deadends at the trailhead parking lot with bathroom and kiosk. \nWe will walk for 2 hours (out and back)  on the Mill Race Path and then probably walk to 100 Mile Bakery for pie to celebrate Pi day. SUMMARY:Elk Lake XC Ski and Snowshoe
DESCRIPTION:Elk Lake Resort (www.elklakeresort.net) is 11 miles west of Mt Bachelor on Cascade Lakes Highway which is not plowed in the winter.  Three snow vans will meet us at the Dutchman Flats Snow-park; they will transport our gear\, food\, and whatever distance participants want to ride. Some folks may want to ski all 11 miles;  others may prefer to be dropped off at the 7 mile point (or wherever) and snow shoe/ski in 4 miles. Once there\, we can ski/snowshoe around 7 mile Elk Lake or continue west on the road. We will stay in spacious\, new cabins #22 and 26.  Dinners and continental breakfasts prepared by participants are included. Lunches are not included.  Cost: $210 for members; $215 for non-members. Cancellation: If you cancel before Feb 13\, the fee less $20 will be refunded. Thereafter\, no refund unless someone takes your place. Registration opens Saturday\, January 19 for members; January 22 for non-members. SUMMARY:Birding the Klamath Basin
DESCRIPTION:Load bus at 7:30 a.m.\, depart at 8:00 am\nBACK BY POPULAR REQUEST!  This interesting and fun trip to view birds in the Klamath Basin is a great winter outing.  Local naturalist and fellow Obsidian Rick Ahrens always makes the trip more enjoyable by sharing his vast knowledge of the natural world.  Plus\, he is an expert at sighting and identifying birds.  While we can’t guarantee just what birds you will see\, here are a few highlights from previous trips:   Snow Geese flying in at dusk\, turning the ground white and filling the air with sound;  Eagles on the ice at Klamath Lake and hunting in the snow covered fields;  Night Herons roosting in the trees along the Link River;  Hundreds of Tundra Swans floating on the water\, looking like a huge white island;  Large numbers of ducks\, geese\, birds of prey and perching birds.
