This is a pretty area; however\, here are reasons you might NOT want to do the hike. Yes\, sometimes it is worth making sure people know upfront what they are signing up for: \n1. It is a long drive\, a good two hours each way\, past Newport to the south and then a 15 miles on FS roads.\n2. For the drive\, it isn’t a long hike\, about 8 miles RT\, maybe closer to 7.5.\n3. I will be taking pictures of blowdowns and removing some of the smaller ones. I am scouting it for the annual early April log out done by the Scorpions of the three trails that go down to Drift Creek. We are only hiking one of those three trails on this date.\n4. That’s right\, the hike goes DOWN 1400’ to Drift Creek\, so one is hiking out uphill. \nThat said\, the area is pretty\, not crowded\, and Drift Creek is pleasant\, and if you “collect” wilderness areas\, as I do\, this is one of the 47 in Oregon. It is 50-100 yards to the other trail destinations across the creek\, but it is about 6 hours of driving and hiking to get there if the water is high\, and it will be!! \nBring good rain gear. Despite the 15 month drought\, the coast range gets rain that the valley does not get There are no stream crossings\, and Drift Creek itself is not easily reached from the end of the trail (which ends in a campsite)\, but the trail may be muddy\, and gaiters are recommended. I got real wet on it last year. The gradient of the trail is steady but not severe. Walking sticks are useful. \nI hope to be at the Trailhead by 10\, at the bottom for lunch\, out by 1:30 or so and back in Eugene before 4. NOTE THE CHANGE IN THE STARTING TIME. Parking is free on the weekends. \nOn this walk we will visit the 20×21 mural designs located in the downtown area. We will see about 25 pieces in all from the building-sized murals to the smaller and often hidden micro-art images. There will be a brief description about the artist and their artwork provided at each mural. \nOur walk will meander through Eugene’s downtown and back alleys. We’ll make our way to several murals near REI then return to the downtown area and finish up near 13th and Willamette at one of the more humorous designs. We should be wrapped-up by 12pm. DESCRIPTION:Departure location: Pisgah Public Market parking lot in Pleasant Hill – 35851 Hwy 58. Take the Oakridge exit off of I-5. After 4 miles watch for the Mall on your left right after the 76 gas station. Park in the middle of the parking lot by the light pole.\nThe old Weyerhaeuser haul road starts in Thurston and goes all the way along Fall Creek to National Forest. For this hike we will do the section between Wallace Creek Rd and Hill Creek Rd. It’s a one lane logging road not used anymore by logging trucks but by walkers\, runners and bicycles. This part is mostly paved. We will have forest and rock outcrops on one side and a lovely view of the valley between Jasper and Lowell on the other side. Near the beginning of our journey we will stop at a Wallace Pioneer Cemetery dated from 1853-1858. I did this Thursday and there were broken snow trails on the golf course but the snow was deep. The safety issue: we really need to stay off the streets as much as we can on the way up to the golf course. Most of the sidewalks are not shoveled so they can be slippery\, slushy. You will need poles. Gaiters are helpful to keep dry. I had yaktraks on my boots that made it so much easier. It should take around 2 hours. I assume that the parking lot Amazon has had the snow removed. I’ll check on that today. Otherwise we can park at Camas Ridge School parking lot /Harris and East 29th. I want to be sure the diamond placement/moving upward is done. Note: THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT CHANCE DUE TO RECENT SNOW THAT PARTS OF THIS LOOP MAY BE IMPASSABLE OR VERY DIFFICULT. IF THE TIE TRAIL IS VERY DIFFICULT\, WE MAY STOP AT THE OVERLOOK OF LOWER ROSARY AND TURN AROUND. IF THE SNOW IS EVEN MORE DIFFICULT\, WE MAY NOT GET THAT FAR.
