DESCRIPTION:THIS IS THE WEDNESDAY HIKE. The Ridgeline Trails are closed so instead we are going to walk through Alton Baker Park and along the Riverbank Path.\nWe’ll meet at the parking lot in Alton Baker Park.Take Country Club Road to Day Island Road to reach the parking lot.  Our start will be in the middle of a figure 8 route. About 4 miles will be along the river on the bike path cross the DeFazio and Greenway Bridges. People can decided when we return to Alton Baker if the want to call it a day or continue on via the Pre’s Trail Paths adding another 3 or more miles.

SUMMARY:Birding the Klamath Basin

This interesting and fun trip to view birds in the Klamath Basin is a great winter outing.  Local naturalist and fellow Obsidian Rick Ahrens always makes the trip more enjoyable by sharing his vast knowledge of the natural world.  Plus\, he is an expert at sighting and identifying birds.  While we can’t guarantee just what birds you will see\, here are a few highlights from previous trips:   Snow Geese flying in at dusk\, turning the ground white and filling the air with sound;  Eagles on the ice at Klamath Lake and hunting in the snow covered fields;  Night Herons roosting in the trees along the Link River;  Hundreds of Tundra Swans floating on the water\, looking like a huge white island;  Large numbers of ducks\, geese\, birds of prey and perching birds. SUMMARY:Eugene Mural Walk
DESCRIPTION:Departure Place:  The walk starts at the Overpark Parking Garage (10th & Oak)\, on the upper most floor\, northeast corner. Parking is free on the weekends.  \nOn this walk we will visit the 20×21 mural designs located in the downtown area. We will see about 25 pieces in all from the building-sized murals to the smaller and often hidden micro-art images.  There will be a brief description about the artist and their artwork provided at each mural.  \nOur walk will meander through Eugene’s downtown and back alleys. We’ll make our way to several murals near REI then return to the downtown area and finish up near 13th and Willamette at one of the more humorous designs. We should be wrapped-up by 12pm. After the walk enjoy a beverage at Falling Sky. The parking garage (where we started) is 3 blocks away and the bus station is 2 blocks.

SUMMARY:Weyerhaeuser Haul Rd Wallace Creek to Hills Creek.
DESCRIPTION:Departure location: Pisgah Public Market parking lot in Pleasant Hill – 35851 Hwy 58.  Take the Oakridge exit off of I-5.  After 4 miles watch for the Mall on your left right after the 76 gas station.  Park in the middle of the parking lot by the light pole.\nThe old Weyerhaeuser haul road starts in Thurston and goes all the way along Fall Creek to National Forest.  For this hike we will do the section between Wallace Creek Rd and Hill Creek Rd.   It’s a one lane logging road not used anymore by logging trucks but by walkers\, runners and bicycles.  This part is mostly paved. We will have forest and rock outcrops on one side and a lovely view of the valley between Jasper and Lowell on the other side.  Near the beginning of our journey we will stop at a Wallace Pioneer Cemetery dated from 1853-1858.

SUMMARY:Laurelwood Golf Course Walk
DESCRIPTION:(This trip was a Mt Pisgah hike\, but was changed due to the snow)\n The plan is to hike up 29th Street to the golf course and the Lodge.  I did this Thursday and there were broken snow trails on the golf course but the snow was deep.  The safety issue: we really need to stay off the streets as much as we can on the way up to the golf course. Most of the sidewalks are not shoveled so they can be slippery\, slushy.  You will need poles. Gaiters are helpful to keep dry. I had yaktraks on my boots that made it so much easier.    It should take around 2 hours.   I assume that the parking lot Amazon has had the snow removed.  I’ll check on that today. Otherwise we can park at Camas Ridge School parking lot /Harris and East 29th.

DESCRIPTION:*This is a nice loop Snowshoe that I will use to check diamond placement.   \nI am changing this route to go to Tait’s Loop via the Tie Trail first.  I want to be sure the diamond placement/moving upward is done.  Note: THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT CHANCE DUE TO RECENT SNOW THAT PARTS OF THIS LOOP MAY BE IMPASSABLE OR VERY DIFFICULT.  IF THE TIE TRAIL IS VERY DIFFICULT\, WE MAY STOP AT THE OVERLOOK OF LOWER ROSARY AND TURN AROUND.  IF THE SNOW IS EVEN MORE DIFFICULT\, WE MAY NOT GET THAT FAR.  BE FLEXIBLE.  \nThis is weather dependent and snow dependent.

SUMMARY:Hidden paths to Ridgeline
DESCRIPTION:******Trip cancelled due to weather.******\n**Meet: outdoor eating area near Market of Choice\, 29th and Willamette. Departing at 9:30 am.\nThere are some steep\, muddy portions of trails\, a creek crossing\, and some steep city streets. Moderate-paced hike in South Hills to Ridgeline trail. We will hike city streets and many hidden connector paths up to the Blanton Ridgeline Trailhead. At SouthRidge City Park we will take a break for snacking and then continue on the Ridgeline. We will descend from the Ridgeline to Willamette Street\, then walk down the Willamette Street sidewalk to 46th. Then we loop our way back to our starting point. Our route is circuitous—group must stay together. Depending on interest\, drinks and/or snacks upon return to Market of Choice and surrounding shops. Hikers should be in current good conditioning and able to hike hilly terrain such as Spencer Butte. Trip will be canceled if any ice or windy conditions. Mileage and elevation is approximate.

DESCRIPTION:Location: Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge\, about 75 miles SW of Tucson.\nWe will work with the Tucson\, Arizona group Friends of BANWR on a habitat restoration project\, possibly removing mesquite from path of planned new wildlife-friendly fence. On-site (and quite nice) lodging is free. Food expenses will be shared and group meals prepared in the full kitchen. We will not work every day so there will be hiking opportunities on the refuge.\nThe trip will begin and end at the BANWR headquarters. Transportation will be on your own.\nThere is the possibility of extending the trip to include hiking opportunities in nearby areas.\nCurrently\, all dates and logistics are somewhat flexible. SUMMARY:Cape Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Starting at the Dry Lake Trailhead\, we will hike a counter-clockwise loop along Princess Tasha Trail\, Scurvy Ridge Trail\, Berry Creek Trail\, and Nelson Ridge Trail. Although this is not a “view hike\,” there are several places where we will be able to see the coastline and Pacific Ocean.  There is the possibility of seeing Elk in a large meadow along Nelson Ridge Trail. There are also some impressive Sitka spruce\, Douglas firs\, and old-growth Red cedars. The trip will proceed if the weather forecast calls for moderate or intermittent drizzle\, but will be canceled or postponed if heavy rain and cold\, windy conditions are forecast.  Note to drivers: the last 1.8 miles or so is on a dirt road which is in pretty good condition overall\, but does have some potholes and shallow gullies. Certainly 4WD and high clearance is not necessary. Our hiking plans may be modified depending upon weather conditions.

SEVEN INCHES OF SNOW FELL LAST NIGHT UP ON HIGHWAY 58 AND THAT ALONE WILL MAKE GETTING TO FUJI SHELTER A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WORK.\nI have done all of this but the last mile between Fuji Shelter and Fuji Mt Trail on the Tie Trail)\nNOTE: If snow conditions are unfavorable\, the hike will be changed or cancelled.\nNOTE: If there is only one car\, the route may be to the shelter and back or some other change\, since we can’t do a shuttle. \nFrom Gold Lake Sno-Park\, we climb slightly then descend to the shelter\, cross Salt Creek\, and climb to Waldo Road.  We cross the road and climb on Fuji Mtn Trail 1.6 miles and 800′ vertical to the Tie Trail.  There is some more climbing on the first part of the Tie Trail\, but from there to the Shelter is up and down.  I’ve gone about 1/3 of the Tie Trail.  From the Shelter\, we have a long 3.7 mile descent to Salt Creek Falls.  Cars will be at both ends.  We are descending more than we are climbing\, but there is a long climb from Waldo Road\, and if we are breaking through deep snow we may have to abort and go back to Gold Lake.  It is 5.1 miles from Gold Lake to where I stopped on the Tie Trail and it took me about 2h45m and I had to break trail all the way from Waldo Road.  The climb itself was not bad.   \nNot everybody has to break trail\, but effort is always appreciated!!

DESCRIPTION:Moonrise is at 4:48 pm and sunset at 5:45.   We will take trail 4 intersecting the main trail to the top. Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box.  Watch for updates depending on weather I might have a few miles of optional hiking before the departure for the summit. \nIf you don’t have a Lane County pass allow time to purchase one with Debit/Credit card (no cash) at the pay station by trailhead. DESCRIPTION:Thurston Hills Trailhead Directions:   Head East out of Springfield on Main Street/Hwy 126.  The trail head parking lot will be the first right after you pass the cemetery.  The parking lot is behind the historic Gray house and across from the Berean church. DESCRIPTION:This trip is at the Ray Benson Sno Park near Santiam Pass.   We will take the South Loop clock wise to the Shelter.  With clear skies will have views of Mount Washington\, Three Finger Jack and Hayrick butt.   Generally\, this trail is broken\, but if it has snowed overnight\, we may have to brake trail\, which will make the trip more difficult.

SUMMARY:Fawn Lake
DESCRIPTION:The trail begins at Crescent Lake Sno-park and heads northwest for about a mile before turning north through heavily wooded Ponderosa pines and mixed firs.  After another mile\, the trail bends to the west and begins to level out in a more open lodgepole pine forest.  We’ll eat lunch at the lake where\, if the weather is clear\, we’ll have good views of Redtop and Lakeview Mountains.  We’ll follow our tracks back out on our return to the cars.  The slopes are generally gentle\, but there are a few steeper sections. The trail can be icy under the trees. \n***Wilderness Area: Trip limited to 12 participants***

DESCRIPTION:To get to trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol.  \nThe hike will go up to Fox Hollow and then continue on the Ridgeline Trail to Blanton Road (then back). This one barely makes the standard for difficult. The elevation gain is spread out. One year we watched deer while having a lunch break at the Blanton trailhead.

SUMMARY:Waldo Archives Visit
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Cafe Roma (825 E 13th Ave) by 1:15 pm to talk about Waldo’s life and his legacy. We will walk over to the Archives at 1:45\, our appointment is at 2\, by 3 pm we should be finished.  \nThis is a hands-on encounter with Judge John B. Waldo’s letters\, journals\, and photographs.  This trip is fixed at 6 participants due to space limitations at the archive. \nJudge John Breckenridge Waldo is often referred to as Oregon’s John Muir or even another Henry David Thoreau. While his impact on conservation was substantial he was not a prolific writer like his contemporaries\, also his works were lost for decades. \nWaldo spent much of his childhood in the mid-1800s visiting the Cascades where he gained a deep appreciation for the region. Early on he publicly proposed a massive greenspace straddling Oregon’s Cascades from California to Washington.  Later\, he served in the Oregon House of Representatives and as the 13th Chief Justice on Oregon’s Supreme Court. For decades\, he used his political connections and understanding of the law to help protect Oregon’s natural beauty. He passed in 1907. For almost 70 years his notes and journals were thought lost until they were rediscovered. His works now reside in the UO Archives. \nToday\, Obsidians can enjoy numerous national forests\, Crater Lake National Park\, and wilderness areas from California to the Columbia Gorge because of his vision.

DESCRIPTION:Departure place is Doris Ranch by the bathrooms.  The 7.8 mile loop hike to discover Oregon State symbols starts at Doris Ranch with stops at Willamette Heights Park\, the Simpson Mural and the Oregon Trail Mural. We will continue our loop on the Mill Race and Middle Fork Path. Bring an Oregon trivia fact or question which we can share at various sunny stops along the way. The fourth annual birthday hike should take around 3 hours. Perhaps lunch at The Public House/100 Mile Bakery.
