SUMMARY:Blanton Ridge to Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. Shorter options are available. \n To get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile.\nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Thurston Hills Trails
DESCRIPTION:This is an afternoon hike! For this route we will head up the Thurston Trail\, across the ridgeline\, over the oak savanah\, down the winding road and back to the cars via the paved old Weyerhauser Haul Rd. There is about a mile on the ridgeline that can get muddy and slippery so I suggest good boots and poles. The rest of the trail has packed gravel or paved. \nWe will shuttle the two miles to the Trail Head and then we hike back to the cars. I will then drive the drivers back to their cars at the trail head. \nIf anyone wants to stay for an early dinner there is a great Mexican restaurant Toreros by the Albertson where we park the cars.

SUMMARY:Finley Wildlife Refuge
DESCRIPTION:The emphasis of this trip is the hike. We will be driving to the Woodpecker trail and starting from there. This will combine both the Woodpecker Loop and the Mill Hill trails together. The trail will be wet and muddy. I usually wear rubber boots and bring another pair of shoes to change into. After the hike we will stop at the main bathroom and store at main office. At this point we may see acorn woodpeckers at the office feeder. For those that are interest on the way out we will stop at boardwalk to check out Cabell Marsh. Last I was there it was full of Tundra Swan\, assorted ducks and geese. We will also check out McFadden Marsh of Bruce Road. We will try to arrange cars so that those just interest in the hike can leave directly after hike.

SUMMARY:The Intertwine: a conservation story
DESCRIPTION:In 1982 Mike Houck was told by officials “there is no place for nature in the city”. Today\, Metro\, the regional government\, owns 17\,000 acres and local park providers own several thousand additional acres of parks and natural area. Mike will describe the evolution of The Intertwine\, a Portland-Vancouver regional system of parks\, trails\, and natural areas. Together government and nonprofit organizations have worked for thirty years to protect biodiversity and watershed health across the urban and rural landscapes all the while ensuring the region’s residents have access to nature where they live\, work and play.

SUMMARY:U of O Campus Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the U of O Knight Library (1501 Kincaid)\, inside front main entrance on the west (right side facing the library). Parking can be difficult. \nThis will be a “plan it as we go” walk\, suggestions welcome. If the weather is nasty we will spend more time indoors looking at few exhibits\, checking student art\, visiting the new buildings on 13th\, and so on. There are plenty of historic trees\, odd sculptures\, a graveyard and such outside. \nMaybe lunch?

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email wintertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.\n To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street.

SUMMARY:Midnight Lake
DESCRIPTION:This is a good first trip of the year for experienced skiers. We’ll leave from Gold Lake Sno-Park\, ski in the flat road to Pengra Pass\, then head over to the PCT. Here the trail makes a steady climb through the trees until it levels out for the stretch to Midnight Lake\, where we’ll stop for a snack or early lunch with the gray jays. From there we’ll continue in a clockwise direction on the rolling terrain over to Abernethy Road and Bechtel Shelter\, for another potential break. From there\, it’s a long downhill glide back to Pengra Pass and back to the Sno-Park. \nThe route might be altered if necessary due to snow conditions\, but will remain comparable in length and difficulty.

SUMMARY:Pisgah Ganderflanking
DESCRIPTION:Ganderflanking is an old word from the county of Wiltshire in southwest England. It means “aimlessly messing about” or “walking about aimlessly.” It is also associated with “larking about” which is defined as “to behave in a silly way because you think it is funny.” The hike leader won’t do much leading. We’ll just start walking and make decisions impulsively at trail junctions. By now you can guess that the listed distance and elevation gain don’t hold much meaning. We’ll want to stay together but there might be assistant leaders that go off with groups on sort of a sub-wander. But we will have to rendezvous at some point. After all\, we do have to get back to the parking lot. On the last ganderflanking we did everyone got a number. When your number came up you made the decision which way to go at a trail junction. \nPisgah has enough miles of trails to keep us wandering aimlessly for hours. But\, fear not\, we’ll avoid walking all day.
