SUMMARY:Restoring Riparian Areas
DESCRIPTION:Restoring Riparian Areas in the Upper Willamette: Beavers and the Humans Who Act Like Them\nJoin Elizabeth Goward and Daniel Dietz of the McKenzie River Trust as we explore the history of the Willamette floodplain and share how two keystone species\, beavers and humans are helping to reshape floodplain restoration. We will examine riparian projects taking place in the upper Willamette that restore riparian floodplain processes and how working with\, and acting like\, beavers can help us to become better stewards of the land.

SUMMARY:South Willamette Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is another hike in the Hardesty Mountain area. But this on doesn’t go to any summit. Instead\, it heads east crossing a few creeks. That means it also crosses the ridges between the creeks making for a good way to get in some uphill without it being one long push. Our path will end at the Eula Ridge trailhead. We’ll have a car or two left there to shuttle us back to the Hardesty trailhead.\nNOTE: START TIME PUSHED BACK TO 9:30.

Recent fires have opened up much of this terrain and made route finding easier. However\, this trip is weather dependent as high winds or precipitation can make skiing difficult. SUMMARY:New Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Our favorite author and hiking guru\, Bill Sullivan\, takes us on a tour of a dozen new or dramatically changed trails in the area between Salem and Bend\, including a new path along the Deschutes River north of Bend\, a new bird refuge trail at Salem\, and several reopened trails to wildflowers in the Cascades. These will be part of his pcoming 5th edition of “100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades.” He’ll also discuss the effects of wildfires and the Forest Service’s new permit system. SUMMARY:Historic Brownsville
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location: Springfield Target at 2750 Gateway St.\, Springfield\, OR. We’ll meet in the Target parking lot on the east side of the store near Buffalo Wild Wings. I have a grey minivan. \nJoin me on a walk through historic Brownsville\, founded in 1853 (6 years before statehood) and where the movie Stand By Me was filmed. We’ll walk mostly on sidewalks about 6 miles past historical sites and up to a viewpoint at the cemetery. After the walk we’ll stop at a coffee shop for a snack. If we have time\, we’ll stop at Living Rock Studio\, a most curious place. \nMy plan is to get home by 3:00\, plenty of time for the 6:30 potluck at the lodge. I suggest watching Stand By Me movie before the walk as we’ll pass a few of the filming locations.

SUMMARY:Gold Lake-Maiden Trail-PCT loop
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE: THERE WILL BE RAIN THIS WEEKEND WITH SNOW LEVEL LOWERING TO 5K FEET SAT. NIGHT AND SUNDAY\, THEN LOWERING FURTHER (BUT WITH LESS PRECIPITATION) SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY MORNING. I SUSPECT A LOT OF SNOW WILL MELT AND THEN FREEZE WITH 6-12 INCHES NEW SNOW ON TOP. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE 20s MONDAY WITH SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. I’M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC CONDITIONS WILL BE FAVORABLE\, BUT WE MAY ENCOUNTER HEAVY\, WET SNOW AT OUR TOP ELEVATION\, 6370 FEET AND PERHAPS ICY CONDITIONS THE FIRST AND LAST 3 MILES. This is a great loop from Gold Lake to the Maiden Peak Trail to where it connects with the PCT. I soloed the loop back to Willamette Pass last spring\, and most of it was unbroken. Climbing is significant from Skyline Trail junction to well along the PCT to Maiden Peak Shelter (700′)\, which is a great place to have lunch. Then it is along contours and climbs (370′) before descending to Upper Rosary Lake and back along the PCT\, going across the bottom of Willamette Pass Ski Area back to Gold Lake (we are allowed to do that\, I checked.) Whether we can do this depends a lot on the snow conditions. If we are breaking trail all the way to the PCT and Maiden Peak Shelter\, we will instead return the way we came\, at least on broken trail\, for 11.4 miles RT. If the snow is great and people feel up to it\, we could go back via Tait’s Loop\, but I don’t see that as a realistic goal. Another turn around point would be the Skyline Trail or even use that to cut off more of the loop\, although I’d like to reach the shelter. Be flexible for this one.

SUMMARY:Wolf Moon Night
DESCRIPTION:Join me on Super Blood Moon 2019 hike: This rare event will be sighted on January 20-21\, the last total lunar eclipse till 2021. Eclipse occurs when Moon and Sun are exactly aligned with the Earth as midpoint (in syzygy). Residual atmospheric light then refracts\, creating crimson Blood Moon. Syzygy can only occur during a full moon: this one occurs during the full moon of January\, known as the Wolf Moon. (Partial Eclipse begins 7:34PM\, Full Eclipse begins 8:41PM\, Maximum Eclipse 9:12PM\, Full Eclipse ends 9:43PM\, Partial Eclipse ends 10:50PM). Please arrive few minutes earlier for sign-in. We will leave 8:00PM from Martin Street trailhead. \nDear moon-gazing friends\,\nSadly\, I am cancelling tomorrow’s Wolf Moon Night outing due to forecasted 98% of cloud cover.\nNext such event will be May 26\, 2021.\nSee ya!
