SUMMARY:New Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades
DESCRIPTION:Our favorite author and hiking guru\, Bill Sullivan\, takes us on a tour of a dozen new or dramatically changed trails in the area between Salem and Bend\, including a new path along the Deschutes River north of Bend\, a new bird refuge trail at Salem\, and several reopened trails to wildflowers in the Cascades. These will be part of his pcoming 5th edition of “100 Hikes in the Central Oregon Cascades.” He’ll also discuss the effects of wildfires and the Forest Service’s new permit system. Along the way\, expect anecdotes about local history\, plants\, and outdoor lore.

SUMMARY:Historic Brownsville
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Location: Springfield Target at 2750 Gateway St.\, Springfield\, OR. We’ll meet in the Target parking lot on the east side of the store near Buffalo Wild Wings. I have a grey minivan. \nJoin me on a walk through historic Brownsville\, founded in 1853 (6 years before statehood) and where the movie Stand By Me was filmed. We’ll walk mostly on sidewalks about 6 miles past historical sites and up to a viewpoint at the cemetery. After the walk we’ll stop at a coffee shop for a snack. If we have time\, we’ll stop at Living Rock Studio\, a most curious place. \nMy plan is to get home by 3:00\, plenty of time for the 6:30 potluck at the lodge. I suggest watching Stand By Me movie before the walk as we’ll pass a few of the filming locations.

SUMMARY:Gold Lake-Maiden Trail-PCT loop
DESCRIPTION:WEATHER UPDATE: THERE WILL BE RAIN THIS WEEKEND WITH SNOW LEVEL LOWERING TO 5K FEET SAT. NIGHT AND SUNDAY\, THEN LOWERING FURTHER (BUT WITH LESS PRECIPITATION) SUNDAY NIGHT/MONDAY MORNING. I SUSPECT A LOT OF SNOW WILL MELT AND THEN FREEZE WITH 6-12 INCHES NEW SNOW ON TOP. TEMPERATURES WILL BE IN THE 20s MONDAY WITH SNOW SHOWERS LIKELY. I’M CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC CONDITIONS WILL BE FAVORABLE\, BUT WE MAY ENCOUNTER HEAVY\, WET SNOW AT OUR TOP ELEVATION\, 6370 FEET AND PERHAPS ICY CONDITIONS THE FIRST AND LAST 3 MILES. This is a great loop from Gold Lake to the Maiden Peak Trail to where it connects with the PCT. I soloed the loop back to Willamette Pass last spring\, and most of it was unbroken. Climbing is significant from Skyline Trail junction to well along the PCT to Maiden Peak Shelter (700′)\, which is a great place to have lunch. Then it is along contours and climbs (370′) before descending to Upper Rosary Lake and back along the PCT\, going across the bottom of Willamette Pass Ski Area back to Gold Lake (we are allowed to do that\, I checked.) Whether we can do this depends a lot on the snow conditions. If we are breaking trail all the way to the PCT and Maiden Peak Shelter\, we will instead return the way we came\, at least on broken trail\, for 11.4 miles RT. If the snow is great and people feel up to it\, we could go back via Tait’s Loop\, but I don’t see that as a realistic goal. Another turn around point would be the Skyline Trail or even use that to cut off more of the loop\, although I’d like to reach the shelter. Be flexible for this one.

SUMMARY:Wolf Moon Night
DESCRIPTION:Join me on Super Blood Moon 2019 hike: This rare event will be sighted on January 20-21\, the last total lunar eclipse till 2021. Eclipse occurs when Moon and Sun are exactly aligned with the Earth as midpoint (in syzygy). Residual atmospheric light then refracts\, creating crimson Blood Moon. Syzygy can only occur during a full moon: this one occurs during the full moon of January\, known as the Wolf Moon. (Partial Eclipse begins 7:34PM\, Full Eclipse begins 8:41PM\, Maximum Eclipse 9:12PM\, Full Eclipse ends 9:43PM\, Partial Eclipse ends 10:50PM). Please arrive few minutes earlier for sign-in. We will leave 8:00PM from Martin Street trailhead. \nDear moon-gazing friends\,\nSadly\, I am cancelling tomorrow’s Wolf Moon Night outing due to forecasted 98% of cloud cover.\nNext such event will be May 26\, 2021.\nSee ya!

SUMMARY:North Bank Habitat
DESCRIPTION:The North Bank Habitat is near Roseburg\, exit 135\, Wilbur\, then on North Bank Rd to the West Entrance. The drive takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. The up and down loop hike has rolling—some steep & challenging hills— up to and along the ridgeline with oak savannas\, meadows\, and views of the Umpqua River. One can easily avoid the poison oak at this time of year. Expect a few sections of the trail to be really muddy. We should start hiking around 9:30 and complete the hike by around 2:30. It will be a steady moderate pace with a late lunch so bring some snacks. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice. If weather conditions are not optimal\, I’ll substitute a hike on Pisgah. The hike is described in Sullivan’s Southern Oregon hiking book.

SUMMARY:Pisgah Ganderflanking
DESCRIPTION:Ganderflanking is an old word from the county of Wiltshire in southwest England. It means “aimlessly messing about” or “walking about aimlessly.” It is also associated with “larking about” which is defined as “to behave in a silly way because you think it is funny.” The hike leader won’t do much leading. We’ll just start walking and make decisions impulsively at trail junctions. By now you can guess that the listed distance and elevation gain don’t hold much meaning. We’ll want to stay together but there might be assistant leaders that go off with groups on sort of a sub-wander. But we will have to rendezvous at some point. After all\, we do have to get back to the parking lot. Trust me. Only once did a practice ganderflanking take Carla and I on an unfamiliar trail that became a “user” trail\, then a game trail\, and then “if we go around those blackberries we should hit trail #3”. Maps will be provided to avoid a situation like that by staying on legit trails and roads. Pisgah has enough miles of trails to keep us wandering aimlessly for hours.

We will walk to Island Park to D Street\, the River Path past the Knickerbocker Bridge\, the Frohnmayer Bridge (formerly Autzen Footbridge) to the Peter DeFazio Bridge. (Bathrooms nearby). Update: I need to be back at Springfield LTD station at noon so where we hop on EMX for our return depends on how briskly we walk. I have extra day bus passes if needed. If questions\, please email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net. There is extra parking behind the Springfield LTD station\, 5th and South B Street (Booth Kelly lot).

SUMMARY:Blanton to Spencer to Pisgah Explora
DESCRIPTION:***DETAILS*** Steve has kindly agreed to pick me up at Pisgah at 0755 on the day of the hike. We will arrive over at Blanton about 0820\, so don’t expect to see us if you arrive really early. At the end of the hike\, I will drive everybody back to Blanton UNLESS you want to have someone pick you up. Your call. Just let me know.***This is not quite the full Ridgeline from Wild Iris Park\, but is Blanton to Spencer Butte to meet the rest of the Obsidians then depart down to the Ridgeline Trail\, take it to Baldy\, go to Suzanne Arlie Park\, come out by LCC\, walk to 30th Ave.\, cross I-5\, stop at the Shell Station\, walk Seavey Loop (well off on the left side) to the base of Mt. Pisgah\, and take Pisgah up and then down\, getting into the second car for the trip back to Blanton. Figure about 7 hours to do this. Mileage is about 4.5 to Spencer Butte summit\, about 6.8 to LCC\, about 4 to Pisgah base\, and another 2.6 on Pisgah if we go straight up and down. Might be slightly less; shouldn’t be more. \nA car shuttle will take you back to Blanton.

SUMMARY:Eugene Micro Art Walk
DESCRIPTION:MEETING LOCATION: Meet at the downtown bus station across from the McDonald Theatre’s mural featuring two people with heads of birds \nLet’s go for a Rat hunt while puttin’ on the Witz! \nIn 2017 nine artists from six different countries visited Eugene. Armed with paintbrushes and spray cans they created a variety of murals around town for residents to enjoy and even debate. While most of the artistic endeavors were on a large scale several artists\, Blek le Rat and Dan Witz\, created images on a smaller more intimate level. \nBlek le Rat (Xavier Prou) is a father of stencil art. He painted 10 playful designs around Eugene\, though 1 was covered apparently by accident this past summer. His work was apparently an inspiration for Banksy. \nDan Witz is a master of trompe l’oeil or visual illusions that trick the eye. Eleven of his haunting images are sprinkled around the downtown area. \nPart of the micro-art’s mystery and enjoyment is searching them out. Our walk today will focus on the Eugene downtown area between Pearl Street and Lincoln Street and between 7th and 11th Avenues. \nWe will try to find as many designs as we can\, though I’m not sure where they all are so this will be an exploration for everyone. The walk will be a moderate pace; start time is 9 am\, we’ll finish latest by 12 pm. There will be a few stairs (about 50 feet) as we gain some elevation to see one of the pieces. We will stop for coffee or tea at one point to provide some warmth and a bathroom break. Meet at the downtown bus station across from the McDonald Theatre’s mural featuring two people with heads of birds. The walk goes rain or shine.

SUMMARY:Solar System
DESCRIPTION:We will meet at the Sun by the Duck Pond (take Day Island Road and park near the pond) and visit the eight planets\, starting with Mars and the Earth-Moon system\, which are nearest the parking lot\, then Venus and Mercury. We will cross the DeFazio bridge to the other side of the river and visit the four outer planets with Neptune at the furthest part. We will then turn around and walk back. We will stop by each of the planets for a few minutes before moving on. \nDress in layers and warmly. We will be stopping for a few minutes from time to time. I plan to be done by noon.

SUMMARY:Amazon Headwaters/Hendricks Park
DESCRIPTION:We will catch Bus #28 at 8:39am to Martin Street to start our hike at 8:51 at Amazon Headwaters Trailhead. We will take the Ridgeline to Fox Hollow\, Dillard\, Spring Trailhead and then walk on city streets to 30th and the Ribbon Trail to Hendricks Park. Once at Hendricks Park\, we will take city streets to Hey Neighborhood Pizza House at 1629 E . 19th Street for their lunch special (optional). Then it is back to our cars at 19th and Patterson. Mileage is an estimate and I suspect the elevation is higher since we have ups and downs. Pace is moderate. I can shorten the hike a few miles if the weather forecast is dismal. I have a few extra bus passes if you need one. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net
