SUMMARY:Midnight Lake
DESCRIPTION:This is a good first trip of the year for experienced skiers. We’ll leave from Gold Lake Sno-Park\, ski in the flat road to Pengra Pass\, then head over to the PCT. Here the trail makes a steady climb through the trees until it levels out for the stretch to Midnight Lake\, where we’ll stop for a snack or early lunch with the gray jays. From there we’ll continue in a clockwise direction on the rolling terrain over to Abernethy Road and Bechtel Shelter\, for another potential break. From there\, it’s a long downhill glide back to Pengra Pass and back to the Sno-Park. \nThe route might be altered if necessary due to snow conditions\, but will remain comparable in length and difficulty.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah Winter Solstice
DESCRIPTION:Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box. The actual solstice is at 2:22 pm. Sunset is 4:37 pm and moonrise is 4:06. Depending on the weather\, I may change the mileage/departure time so look for an update the day before. If we are surprised with clear skies\, we will join a crowd of solstice hikers looking for the sun rays to light up the Mt. Pisgah Sighting Pedestal. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions. If you don’t have a Lane County pass allow time to purchase one with Debit/Credit card (no cash) at the pay station by trailhead. To buy an annual pass and support the trails\, check out the websites for Friends of the Buford Park ($50.00) or Mt. Pisgah Arboretum. ($50.00/$40.00 for seniors).

SUMMARY:Cummins Creek Loop
DESCRIPTION:I AM GOING TO CANCEL THE HIKE. I have some misgivings about doing this\, because I have been burned several times by low pressure systems turning out over and over again to be slower\, weaker\, drier and further (north/south) than advertised. But I’m concerned about winds\, which with 50 degree temps and some rain\, are hypothermia issues. Also\, the drive up the coast will be difficult. \nPLEASE EMAIL ME (NOT EVERYBODY ON THE LIST) OR CALL ME TO LET ME KNOW THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED THIS. IF NOT\, I WILL BE OUT AT TARGET TOMORROW TO TURN PEOPLE BACK. SORRY TO WAIT THIS LONG\, BUT I HAVE LOOKED AT SEVERAL FORECAST MODELS\, SEEN THE WET AND WINDY ONES\, SEEN ALSO THE SLOWER TO COME IN ONES. AS A GOOD RULE OF THUMB\, WHEN I ARGUE WITH MYSELF ABOUT DOING OR NOT DOING SOMETHING\, IT USUALLY MEANS THE MOST CONSERVATIVE APPROACH SHOULD WIN OUT. MAYBE NEXT YEAR.

SUMMARY:Spencer Butte from Blanton Road
DESCRIPTION:This hike to the top of Spencer Butte takes the less traveled route from Blanton Road. We’ll cross Blanton Ridge before continuing on from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. This option provides a good in town workout.. If the weather doesn’t co-operate we can forgo the exposed rocky steps near the top. \nTo get to the trailhead from 29th & Willamette continue south on Willamette. At Willamette/Donald St Intersection bear right on Willamette. Immediately bear right again on to Crest Drive. Follow signs staying on Crest for approximately 1.2 miles to the Junction with Blanton Road. Turn left on Blanton. The trial head is on your left in about ½ mile. \nAnother way to get to the Blanton trailhead is to go south on Chambers until it ends at Crest Drive. Turn left on to Crest. In about ½ mile turn right on Blanton Road.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah
DESCRIPTION:Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee/station signs. We meet one row down from the gate and pay station. If you don’t have a Lane County permit\, allow time to use a credit card at the pay station by trailhead. Depending on weather\, I plan to take back trails like #4 and #2 to the summit\, avoiding the main trail #1. Mileage and elevation could vary but around 6 miles at a steady pace. Estimated time is 3 hours so bring snacks. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions. The route is longer and harder than taking the main trail to the summit.

SUMMARY:Pisgah Trail 3
DESCRIPTION:Casual afternoon Pisgah wandering. If you’re familiar with Trail #3 you know that in winter parts of it can be a slippery mess. So\, lets travel the this trail before we get enough rain to create problems. We’ll head south through the meadows for about two miles before get to the south end of trail 3. By then everyone will be warmed up and we start our climb for the day. Much more relaxing than starting uphill right from the parking lot. This hike doesn’t go to the top but takes you through lowlands\, rocky oak hillsides and more forested areas. PARKING PASS. If you don’t have a Lane County permit\, allow time to use a credit card at the pay station by trailhead.
