SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org. Every Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome.\n   To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park Martin Street near the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. Please call the leader if any questions. SUMMARY:Obsidian Grounds
DESCRIPTION:We need to:\n• Pressure wash handicap parking area. You would probably want storm boots and pants (the heavy duty\, impermeable rain gear) and ear protection to do this.\n• The blackberries are encroaching all around the grounds perimeter\, so if you want to work on cutting them back dressing in thorn resistant long sleeved shirt and long pants would be good\, along with heavy gloves\, pruners and/or loppers.\n• The gutters on both the Lodge and the storage building need cleaning. This would involve working from a ladder.\n• Ivy and poison oak are climbing and taking over some trees and needs to be cut out. This would likely mean contact with the poison oak so knowledge of your sensitivity to it and how to deal with it would be important if you want to take this on.\n• We need to clean up the areas that we recently expanded our mowing into to the south and west of the Lodge.

SUMMARY:Exploring the Olympic Peninsula
DESCRIPTION:Load Bus 7:30 AM\, depart 8:00 AM\nThis trip offers opportunities for both group and individual exploration. We plan to take our time driving around the peninsula\, starting near Olympia and returning to Oregon via the beautiful Astoria-Megler Bridge. We will drive along the Hood Canal\, stopping at a waterside State Park. Although we are somewhat limited in where we can take the bus in the Olympic National Park\, we will drive to both the Hurricane Ridge and the Hoh Rain Forest visitor centers\, allowing time for short hikes. Our schedule will include a visit to pebbly Rialto Beach near La Push. We will spend two nights in Port Townsend (Harborside Inn) and one night in Port Angeles (Red Lion Hotel); both are on the waterfront with many points of interest within walking distance. As we travel on to Forks we will enjoy the natural beauty of forest\, lakes and rivers. Our fourth night will be at the Forks Motel. Be sure to bring a rain jacket as Forks gets about 120 inches rain per year. We will visit the Forks Logging Museum before continuing south on Hwy. 101 to Raymond which features steel sculptures of wildlife and people. We will also find a special point of interest here. On to Astoria\, our stay is at the (Comfort Suites Columbia River)\, which has a great view of the river and a nice adjacent walking trail. Our final day will include visiting the Maritime Museum\, the Astoria Column and lunch at the famous Camp 18 Restaurant and Logging Museum. We should return to Eugene before 6:00 p.m. A complete itinerary will be available at the Bus Rally and by request.\n Bring: National Parks Pass (Senior/Interagency Pass)\, rain jacket\, layered clothes\, good walking shoes\, camera\, binoculars\, sun screen\, bird book and a small cooler for lunch supplies. \nALL BUS TRIP PARTICIPANTS MUST COMPLETE A MEDICAL INFORMATION FORM FOR CURRENT YEAR.\n Medical form is available from registrar or at http://www.obsidians.org/com_bus \nCost: $760.00 Members $772.00 Non-Members $100.00 deposit due at registration $200.00 due May 15th\, $200.00 due July 15th\, Balance $260/$272 due August 15th\nSingle supplement $340.00\n(Checks payable to Obsidians Bus Trips) REGISTRATION & MAIL CHECKS TO: Judy Phelps\, 541-726-0118\n2774 Viewmont Ave.\, Springfield\, OR 97477 Meetup/Departure Location: ShopKo Coburg Rd/Chad Dr\,(btwn ShopKo & Taco Bell)

SUMMARY:Mt Pisgah
DESCRIPTION:Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee/station signs. We meet one row down from the gate and pay station. If you don’t have a Lane County permit\, allow time to use a credit card at the pay station by trailhead. Depending on weather\, I plan to take back trails like #4 or #5 and #2 to the summit\, avoiding the main trail #1. Our route will include a view of the burn area. Mileage and elevation could vary but around 6 miles at a steady pace. Estimated time is 3 hours so bring snacks. Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if you have questions. The route is longer and harder than taking the main trail to the summit.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Grounds
DESCRIPTION:We will be doing fall cleanup and maintenance (mowing\, weed whacking\, weeding beds) to get things spruced up for the ExploraTalk and the start of other fall Obsidian functions. It may still be too dry to use lawnmowers and if so we will use weed whackers to cut back some of the summer’s growth. If you have a weed whacker that you could bring it would be a plus.

SUMMARY:Waldo Lake Weekend

Day hikes for the trip will be determined around the Friday night campfire.\nFriday 13th: arrive at Waldo Lake on your own schedule. If Shadow Bay is unexpectedly closed we will find space in the North Waldo Campground. There is a full Harvest Moon tonight – possible night hike. \nSaturday 14th: Hike as needed. For those who wish\, they can try to the find the Waldo Tree. If you know where it is\, please don’t spoil the fun for those who want to locate it. Participants are given a general direction\, two photos\, no map (yes\, the tree can be found). \nSunday 15th: Hike as desired; return home on your own schedule.

SUMMARY:Broken Top Crater Lake/Tam McAuthur
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts @ Three Creek Lake. We will hike 2.5 miles to the viewpoint on Tam McAurthur Rim then continue along the trail and a user trail 2.2 miles to Broken Hand. We will hike around Broken Hand. This small section of trail is narrow and has drop off on one side\, so caution is necessary. Once around Broken Hand we will be able to look down on Broken Top lake nestled in the crater. This lake is sometimes called “No Name Lk”. We will be able to hike along the rim for awhile and scramble down a good trail to the lake.\nIt is a long\, but very rewarding\, day. If weather is clear we will have up close views of the Sisters.

SUMMARY:Mount Thielsen
DESCRIPTION:Mt Thielsen is the perfect first Oregon mountain to climb. It is about a 10 mile trip round trip. Then\, there is a great ridge with a bit of exposure that we will scramble up. Then we put on our harnesses and climb the final rock to the summit. Participants need to be comfortable with exposure and need to be in good enough physical shape for a 12 hour day. Meetup/Departure Location: TBD

SUMMARY:Scott Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mountain Loop is one of my favorite hikes. We will hike to four lakes; Benson\, Tenas\, Hand and Scott Lakes. We will have amazing views of cascade peaks from the top of Scott Mt. We hike through old growth forests\, meadows\, the western edge of a major lava flow and one of the best picture spots for the Three Sisters.\nBring your swim suit or water shoes if you would like to take quick dip in Tenas Lake. I plan on lunch on the top of Scott Mountain. Later in the hike there is a great spot for huckleberries (hopefully they will be ripe).\nWe will likely be back in Eugene by 5 PM.\nThis is a long hike with a moderate fast pace due to the distance. If you have questions please call me.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:NOTE: My hikes are leave no trace and do NOT feed the animals. The first is obvious\, but sometimes people think throwing apple cores is acceptable. It is not. The second is bad for the animal\, giving it food that is not healthy for it\, causing obesity and early death\, encourages approaching of people\, with subsequent biting\, is a nuisance to others\, and treats wild animals like a petting zoo in which we are in control. Enjoy your snacks\, enjoy the hike\, and enjoy the animals\, as they all are. We are visitors to their home. I know others feed them\, but not on my hikes. \nObsidians are responsible for picking up litter in the upper part of the trail. We have a couple who are great doing it\, but anybody is welcome to help. Maybe consider bringing a plastic bag for anything you see. \nIf this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street. s from Canyon Drive Street sign with the hiker symbol.

SUMMARY:Diamond Peak: PCT and Mt. Yoran trails
DESCRIPTION:To make this a one-way hike we will do a key exchange and divide into two hiking groups. Joel Greer will lead one group and Steve Adey the other. \nOne group will start at the Vivian Lake trailhead (by Hemlock Butte) on W side of Diamond Peak. They will hike E on the Mt. Yoran Trail\, past Divide Lake\, and then N on the PCT to the trailhead by Pengra Pass near Odell Lake. See Sullivan #97\, Divide Lake and #95\, Midnight and Yoran Lakes. \nThe second group will do the reverse\, starting at the Pengra Pass PCT trailhead by Odell Lake and hiking S on the PCT and then W past Divide Lake to the Vivian Lake trailhead. \nTheoretically we will meet in the middle. And find a vehicle at the exit point.

DESCRIPTION:We will park at base of Cape Perpetua. We will hike along the Devils Churn and down to the Blow hole. We will cross back under he highway via tunnel and continue back to the trail to a extremely large cedar. The last thing we will do is climb the trail to the top of Perpetua for view. SUMMARY:Rigdon Lakes
DESCRIPTION:This is a hike that William Sullivan added back to the top 100 Hikes of the Central Cascades. The trail starts along Waldo Lake and then turns North to venture around the Upper & Lower Ridgon lakes and Lake Kiwa. About 70% of this area burned in 1996 but is coming to life with new young trees now 4-12 feet tall. The treasure of this hike at this time of the year are HUCKLEBERRIES. Hopefully ripe -we will snack along the way. Bring a container to fill at our lunch stop. We will also stop for a swim in Waldo Lake. We should be back to Eugene around 5 PM.
