SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah

SUMMARY:South Sister
DESCRIPTION:South Sister is the third tallest mountain in Oregon. Although a non-technical climb\, a successful summit of this peak requires endurance\, mental strength\, and an incredible tolerance for loose scree. Efforts are rewarded with a stunning summit view that may extend as far north as Mt Adams on a clear day. We’ll backpack in to Moraine Lake on Sunday afternoon\, gaining approx. 1200 ft of elevation in under 2 miles and arrive at the lake after some of the week-end crowd has departed. Monday’s climb will begin early to avoid the heat of the afternoon sun. We’ll gain an additional 4000 ft of elevation in 3.5 miles. Participants need to be strong enough to carry the 10 essentials\, a lot of water\, ample snacks\, and multiple layers and types of clothing as summit temperatures and conditions could be cold and windy. After the climb\, we’ll return to Moraine Lake for a second night in one of Oregon’s most beautiful locations.

SUMMARY:Broken Top
DESCRIPTION:This trip starts at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Green Lakes / Fall Creek Trailhead. We will hike about 5 miles to a spring above Green Lakes where we will set up camp. At 6:00 AM Sunday\, we’ll hike the climbers trail to the north ridge and then follow the ridge south to the summit. At one spot just below the summit\, there is a short section of vertical climbing where you will follow a fixed rope with prusiks\, followed by an unroped\, exposed catwalk and final 20 feet of scrambling. Descent will include a short 12-foot rappel to get us back on the north ridge. Once back at the spring\, we’ll break down camp and hike out on the Green Lakes trail. Carpooling information will be distributed within a week before the climb.

SUMMARY:South Waldo Huckleberry Hike
DESCRIPTION:***QUESTIONABLE HUCKLEBERRY SEASON??***I was in the South Waldo area from Tuesday-Thursday and in NW Waldo (Winchester Ridge) the prior Thursday. There are huckleberries\, but there are not many now\, and there aren’t many berries ripening. This may change between now (Friday) and the hike\, but the 9 months and counting drought and one of the hottest summers on record is not being conducive to berry production. \nEasy hike into Waldo Lake from Shadow Bay\, where huckleberries may be found along the south end and up the trail to Bingo Lake as well as further west on Waldo past the High Divide Trail junction (which leads to Bingo Lake.) Bingo Lake would be a reasonable destination for berries\, lunch\, and a swim. Or Waldo. Plan on being up there until 2:30 so as to be back in Eugene in late afternoon. It’s a good place to sit and read\, swim\, or relax.

SUMMARY:Waldo Lake Kayak
DESCRIPTION:This is a redo of the 2016 Waldo kayak trip. The objective is to paddle the length of the lake on two consecutive days camping one night on the north end and a second night on the south shore. The 2016 trip went smoothly given the great weather we had. Any routes undertaken on this paddle will take into consideration the weather and the lake surface. We will be flexible. A poor weather forecast for the proposed dates will postpone the trip or cancel it. Daily starts will be early to avoid the afternoon winds at this elevation (over 5000 feet) that can bring whitecaps to the lake surface. With early starts\, we should be into camp by early afternoon. This will allow for day hikes into the Wilderness\, swimming\, or leisurely naps. I expect the mosquitos will not be a problem after a dry summer. Don’t expect it to be mosquito free.\nThe proposed trip is leave north lake put in by early afternoon\, camp Thursday near outlet to North Fork Willamette\, paddle to south end to spend Friday night\, return to north take out by mid to late afternoon on Saturday\, drive home.\nThere will be a pretrip meeting about a week before the trip. Unless you have done this paddle with me previously\, it will be mandatory. The pretrup meeting date will be announced shortly after signup opens. I’ll provide a trip checklist for gear needed for kayaking\, otherwise\, everyone will be expected to bring appropriate camp gear. The kayak pace will be leisurely to moderate. NO sit-on-top kayaks. You will want at least a 12 foot touring kayak or it may be difficult to keep up with other touring kayaks. Spray skirts are advised. PFDs are mandatory and will be worn. All paddlers must be comfortable paddling in wave conditions as the surface can go from smooth to rough with little warning.

SUMMARY:Obsidian Loop
DESCRIPTION:NOTE:\n1. meeting location is Campbell Community Center\n2. $10 special entrance fee to be divided among participants so expect a $1 fee\n3. NW Pass required for parking at trailhead\, so if you have signed up as a possible driver and do not have one\, let me know so I can inquire with other participants to make sure we have enough passes to cover cars parking. \nIf you have not hiked this trail\, don’t be scared off by the rating; the trail is good and elevation spread out \,so it is pretty easy to complete as long as one has the endurance for the mileage. Pace will be moderate\, adjusted to the group. Wildflowers are usually a delight on this hike\, as is one’s proximity to North and Middle Sister. We will take lunch in the meadow above Obsidian Falls\, where one can watch fresh spring water bubbling up out of the ground.

From Birthday Lake we continue to the South Waldo Trail jct. passing Verde Lake on the way. Fuji mountain is a steady climb to the top where we will take in the views of Waldo Lake and the surrounding Mountains. Lunch will be eaten on the top to give us more time to enjoy the views. SUMMARY:Diamond Peak Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:5 days and 4 nights. We will circumambulate Diamond Peak clockwise\, mostly avoiding the PCT. Entry via FS road 23\, E of Oakridge\, trail 3662 (Notch Lake) on the NW side of the wilderness. \nExpect 10 miles the first day to a base camp SE of Yoran Lake for nights 1 and 2. About 6 miles to a second base camp south of Diamond Peak for nights 3 and 4. Finally\, day 5 will be 10 miles back to our cars. This itinerary leaves days 2 and 4 open for choice day hikes. \nThe trip will involve several miles of off-trail map and compass travel\, so you need to be comfortable with that. I have done parts of this hike\, not all of it. The itinerary will be subject to change as conditions dictate. \nFood and cooking are on your own. There will be multiple water sources (lakes)\, purification required. \nMaybe the mosquitos will be gone. \nMaybe the woods will not be on fire this summer. (Will cancel if smoke conditions are like 2017.) \nPossible cool nights (6500 ft. elevation)\, late season wildflowers\, and huckleberries. \nAugust 12 is the peak of the Perseid Meteor Shower and August 11 is the new moon\, so viewing conditions could be excellent.
