SUMMARY:Heckletooth Mountain
DESCRIPTION:A few of us did this hike last year and found the Big Leaf and Vine Maple colors were remarkable. It’s a short drive to the trailhead\, just out of Oakridge\, and the trail is good\, with the steep climb coming the last mile or so before Heckletooth. It is a mountain bike trail\, and they maintain it\, so we need to use caution on the hike.\n No stream crossings. The summit is mostly open in Manzanita bushes; there are some open places along the trail\, although most of it is in woods.\nThis is a Leave No Trace hike\, and please\, no deliberate feeding of wildlife.

SUMMARY:Sweet Cr/Beaver Cr Falls
DESCRIPTION:From the Homestead Trail Head we will walk along the catwalk trail to the main falls\, stopping several times to enjoy the autumn colors. After returning to the parking area\, we will drive another 2.5 miles along Sweet Creek Road to USFS Road 639 and hike 0.1 miles to Beaver Creek Falls. (See Sullivan Coast Hikes #59.) If the weather is good we may\, by consensus\, continue on to Florence and visit the Sutton Creek wetlands. This would add another 0\,4 miles to the hike\, and another 32 miles to the driving cost. There will be frequent stops for photography and snacks. You don’t have to be in great physical condition to enjoy this easy hike. A weather update will be posted a few days before the hike. WEATHER UPDATE 10/18: Forecast is for misty fog burning off by mid-morning. Be prepared for a few possible (but unlikely) sprinkles. Looks good!

SUMMARY:Thurston Hills
DESCRIPTION:Weather update from Brad who canceled: “Scott Lake weather\, 90% rain this morning tapering down to 60% this afternoon\, high of 44. I’m thinking zero visibility.” We will drive up the McKenzie Highway to take FS Road 260\, a 1.5 mile gravel road\, to the trailhead. It is about a two hour drive. There is almost a 360 degree panoramic view from the summit. We could decide instead to take the loop hike to Hand Lake adding a few more miles. Moderate pace. UPDATE: If rain is an issue when we meet\, our alternative will be to hike in the Thurston Hills area walking south from Albertsons to the Weyerhauser Haul Road\, Spine Trail\, and more. If you have questions\, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net Drivers will need a Recreation Pass.
