SUMMARY:Perpetua Hike & Beaver Creek Kayak
DESCRIPTION:### The kayak\, paddles\, and PFD’s are provided ### \nThis is an exploration of the beauty and natural history along Oregon’s central coast. We will spend Sunday hiking in the magnificent Cape Perpetua headland\, on Monday we’ll be kayaking on the peaceful and picturesque Beaver Creek. The visit to Beaver Creek is through a program of Oregon State Parks\, they provide recreational kayaks\, paddles and life jackets. A trip fee of $30 (covers all kayaking equipment/costs and camping fees)\, payable to the trip leader on the first day. \nSCHEDULE:\nSunday\, August 5:\nDepart Eugene at 8:30 am. We’ll spend the day hiking around the tide pools and overlooks of Cape Perpetua. In the late afternoon\, we’ll set up camp and folks can rest\, hike some more\, or take it easy. After dinner let’s hike (3 miles round trip) to the stone shelter overlook to enjoy the sunset\, if the clouds cooperate. \nMonday\, August 6:\nThe next morning will be an early start. We break camp at 7:15 am and drive half an hour north to the Beaver Creek Welcome Center near Ona Beach State Park. Our guide will meet us\, provide a safety orientation\, and give us an overview of the natural history of Beaver Creek. The tour will be 4 hours total\, with an estimated 2.5 hrs. of paddling; this includes check-in\, instruction\, and check out. In the afternoon we can lunch in Yachats and explore a little more before heading back to Eugene. The plan is to return home before 5 pm. \nKAYAKING:\n# Oregon State Parks provide recreational kayaks\, paddles and life jackets; participants may NOT use their own kayaks\, paddles\, or PFD’s.\n# We will have access to 4 single kayaks\, and 2 tandem kayaks (which hold two people each).\n# A Liability Waiver is needed by the Oregon State Parks. The trip leader will provide copies of this at the beginning of the trip. It must be completed to go kayaking.\n# You need to bring:\n-Sun protection (sunscreen\, glasses\, hat)\n-Waterproof camera and/or binoculars\n-Plenty of water and snacks/lunch\n-Shoes you don’t mind getting wet\n-Waterproof or quick drying clothing (avoid cotton please)\n-Change of dry clothes\n-Gloves can help with paddling but are not necessary\n-Emergency contact number that will not be on tour \nWe will meet at the Target on West 11th Sunday morning. Participants are encouraged to contact each other about carpool arrangements prior to the trip so you don’t have to leave a car overnight at Target. \nBEAVER CREEK:\nPaddling on Beaver Creek through a freshwater marsh is the perfect way to enjoy nature in a peaceful\, tranquil environment. The marsh is home to many types of wildlife\, especially migratory birds and waterfowl. We will pause often to point out interesting natural and cultural features in the park. This tour is great for beginners and kayakers of all levels. The creek is slow moving and not affected by ocean tides. DESCRIPTION:Don’t let the early departure time discourage you.  It  is a refreshing time of day to hike at Pisgah. Most of the hike will be in the shade.  The four mile hike to the summit: We will take # 5 through the south meadow up to Trail 3 with its  great views to the west. The hardest part will be hiking up Trail 6 (south ridge).   From the summit\, we can take Trail 4 from the main trail.  If you so choose\, you can opt to take the main trail down to the parking lot.  I’ll have muffins for a treat on top. DESCRIPTION:One of Oregon’s most scenic hikes.  We’ll start this loop hike at the Obsidian trailhead heading East where we’ll make a quick stop at Four-in-One Cone before continuing on to join the PCT.  We’ll then head South to Opie Dilldock Pass where we’ll make a short side trip up to the Collier Glacier viewpoint to have lunch.  After lunch we’ll continue West to the Obsidian trail and our trailhead.  There will be an additional expense to cover the $10 cost of the Limited Entry permit.

SUMMARY:Pamelia Lake
DESCRIPTION:Pamelia Lake is a Limited Access Area. The lake is only 2.25 miles from the trailhead  and it’s not much farther to the PCT and a great view of Mount Jefferson. You’ll have the option of hanging out at the lake or going to the PCT and Milk Creek for that view. In 2006 part of the Milk Creek Glacier broke off from Mount Jefferson and sent a 4-foot deep mud flow race down the creek drainage. It took out trees\, moved boulders\, and buried vegetation. Evidence of this event is notable along some sections of the trail. Milk and Pamelia Creeks altered their courses and sections of the trail had to be rebuilt. \nFor those that would like a view of Jefferson\, we can add on another half mile and go on up to where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses Milk Creek.

DESCRIPTION:This is a done in conjunction with another hike. The other hike will be counting on us for transportation. We’ll drop the other hikers at the PCT trailhead at the Santiam Pass. Then we head on to Jack Lake. The Jack Lake Trailhead is the entrance into the popular Canyon Creek Meadows  and Wasco Lake area. We’ll have time to explore the Meadows and Wasco while we wait for the other group to descend from the PCT. We should bring binoculars. We might be able to watch the other hikers near the north ridge of Three-Fingered Jack.\n***This hike needs drivers. We need to support the other group; for them to be able to have a full wilderness group of 12 we need 4 drivers that can take three each. If we get at least four drivers then we can see about taking more for our hike.

SUMMARY:Three Fingered Jack/ P.C.T.
DESCRIPTION:This is a done in conjunction with another hike. The other hike will be providing our transportation.Our hike will be traveling north from the Santiam Pass on the Pacific Crest Trail as it passes beneath 3 Fingered Jack. Besides close up views of Jack we’ll be able to see view a variety of lakes and peaks from this often open trail. At about 6.5 we’ll look down to Canyon Creek Meadows to the east and toward Santiam and Duffy Lakes to the west. In another 3 miles we reach Minto pass and leave the PCT.  Our path descends to Wasco Lake and then we can loop through Canyon Creek Meadows. It’s possible to forgo this loop and shorten the hike by 1.8 miles. We meet the other hiking group and Jack Lake Trailhead.\n  **How many drivers are on the other hike limits the number of people that can go on this hike. I’m starting with a limit of 9.  hopefully that can be bumped to the wilderness limit of 12.

SUMMARY:Broken Top
DESCRIPTION:Broken Top is my favorite mountain. It’s the most beautiful of all the hikes/approaches of all the Oregon mountains. It as a super fun ridge to scramble up\, then has great exposure and a tiny bit of technical rock work at the top. So much fun.\nBroken Top is a long approach\, as you can see\, 17 miles round trip. You need to be in top\, physical shape. We will be moving at a brisk pace to complete it in one day.\nIf you are concerned about your fitness\, there are other Broken Top trips available that take two days\, where you camp at the base.\nI love doing Broken Top in one day because we get to carry a light pack.\nYou can choose to camp at the trailhead the evening before\, or drive over in the very early morning.

DESCRIPTION:Load bus at 7:30 a.m.\, depart at 8:00.\nThe new Albany Historical Carousel is the focus of our trip to Linn County.  On our way we will have a leisurely visit to old time Albany and the small rural city if Halsey.  We’ll start at the Halsey city park for our coffee break.  Next will be a tour at the Ewethful Fiber Farm & Mill located in an old\, old building\, part of a century farm.  Yarns are produced here from a variety of animals.  The gift shop has many temptations!  Our last stop in Halsey is City Hall\, a new looking building rescued from the ancient railroad station.  We’ll see democracy at work.  In Albany we’ll visit the oldest house (Monteith 1849)\, the Regional museum and drive past many historic residences. Lunch (Bring you own) will be at the Monteith River Park located at the confluence of the Calapooia and Willamette rivers.  This beautiful park has facilities for picnickers and a paved trail along the river.   The Carousel located nearby is fun for all.  We’ll have a tour of the carving room\, time for the gift shop and riding on a favorite animal.  Our final stop will be at the Talking Waters garden in north Albany.  This is an engineered water treatment wetland developed by Albany\, Millersburg and the metals manufacturing ATI. DESCRIPTION:This is our weekly aerobic hike starting at Martin Street Trailhead up to Spencer Butte. We start promptly so come a few minutes early to check in. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather. It is a steady pace varying from moderate to fast.  Guests are welcome. Return to Glacier Meadows (~8 miles). Camp.\nFriday\, 07/21: Camp at one of the 5 campgrounds along the return trail depending on permit availability. SUMMARY:Iron Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Meeting Place:  Pioneer Plaza /Safeway on W Q street . West side of parking lot.\n  The early departure is to avoid the crowds and possibly afternoon hot temperatures.   It is an hour drive up Mohawk Valley to Sweet Home.  Then we head  east up Highway 20  around 35 miles to Deer Creek Trailhead for the loop hike to Cone Peak Trail and the lookout where we will have lunch. Moderate pace with stops to view the flowers. It is not a flower identification hike nor is it a race.   If  the .9 mile trail from 4800 ft to 5455 ft  to the lookout  looks a bit too much\, there is a bench where you can wait.  If questions\, email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net.  There is a toilet at Deer Creek parking lot. If high temperatures are a problem\, we can make adjustments to shorten the hike.

DESCRIPTION:***WEATHER ALERT***(710)  Hot weather expected this weekend with valley temperatures in the high 80s to low 90s and probably high 80s at altitude.  Be sure to carry enough water and wear light clothing.  There is a lot of sun exposure on this hike.*** \nThis is the iconic Club hike.  We will do the loop counterclockwise.  It should be late enough that most of the snow has gone\, but be prepared for snow on the trail in the higher elevations.  There should be good wildflowers as well.  White Branch Creek may be deep enough to get some footwear wet in crossing\, but likely not.

DESCRIPTION:### UPDATE July 11: ###\nPlan B is in Effect. The interpretive tour at Fort Rock has been cancelled by the ranger due to extreme fire danger. More info about Plan B is below. Trip members have been contacted. \n### UPDATE July 9: ###\nIt ‘s looking more and more like our trip to central Oregon will be timed to a heat wave. The temperatures will be hovering around 100 and there will be scorching sunshine. Heat exhaustion is a concern. Things might cool down to the lower 90’s on Saturday. This is a tough group\, but a constant barrage of heat can affect even the best of us. \nI’m amending the current trip schedule so we have more shade time. \nDay 1: Bring your swim trunks! We’ll spend a couple of additional hours in the Paulina Lakes area as there’s drinking water\, opportunities for swimming\, a visitor center (possibly with AC)\, and shade trees. In the late afternoon\, after the hottest part of the day\, we’ll drive to Hole in the Ground\, make camp and explore when its cooler. \nOn day 2\, we’ll visit the Fort Rock Cave as planned. Then make our way to Derrick Cave and spend the hottest part of the day in the general vicinity where we have access to a cool cave. In the late afternoon\, we’ll drive to the Green Mountain camping area. \nDay 3\, as planned. \nDay 4\, as planned. \n— PLAN B —— PLAN B —— PLAN B —— PLAN B —— PLAN B —— PLAN B — \nIn the event of extreme fire danger the tour at the Fort Rock cave might be cancelled. The interpretive ranger at Fort Rock will make a decision a day or two before. If this happened\, here’s plan B: \nDay 1: as planned. \nDay 2: Make our way to Derrick Cave on the early side\, and then drive to Crack in the Ground to hike in the cooler sub-terrain. That night camp at the Horserock RV campground (near Fort Rock) where’ there’s water\, a small store and showers. Cost per person will be approx. $22. \nDay 3: Drive north on 97 towards Bend and visit: High Desert Museum\, Lava Lands Visitor Center\, Lava Tube. That evening\, go the Pine Mountain Observatory as planned. \nDay 4: Sleep in a little and hit the road before the heat\, return to Eugene in the early afternoon. \n======\nORIGINAL DESCRIPTION:\nThis is 4-day exploration of central Oregon’s rich cultural heritage\, dynamic geology\, and majestic night sky. The trip is timed with a rare visit to the Fort Rock Cave with a state park interpreter and dark nighttime skies when the UO’s astronomical observatory is open to the public. This trip is ONLY for Obsidian members. Flexibility is a requirement\, it is the first visit by the leader to many of these areas\, this trip is exploratory. \nDAY 1:\nWe start the trip driving to the picturesque 80-foot side-by-side Paulina Creek Falls in the in Newberry National Volcanic Monument. At Newberry we’ll hike for several hours then drive to the Hole-in-the-Ground\, a mile wide and 500-feet deep maar (a volcanic explosion crater) to hike into the crater and walk the circumference if possible. We will overnight along the rim and enjoy stargazing. The elevation is 4\,650 feet so plan on cool temperatures at night. Driving time will be about 3.75 hours. Plan on hiking up to 5 miles.  \nDAY 2:\nThe next morning we’ll rise early and drive a short distance to the Fort Rock State Park for a visit to its famous cave. Public visits to the cave are rarely offered and only with a park interpreter. This National Heritage cave is the site of an archaeological discovery of several sagebrush bark sandals dated to be 9\,000 to 11\,000-years old. About lunchtime we’ll stop by the Fort Rock Homestead Museum\, a collection of original homestead era (the early 1900s) buildings. Then we drive along the lava fields to Derrick Cave\, a 30 feet high\, 50 feet wide\, and 1/4 mile long lava tube with several illuminating skylights. In the afternoon we drive to the BLM Green Mountain Campground set up camp\, and if the nearby fire tower is open\, enjoy a birds-eye view of the high desert.  The elevation is 5\,190 feet. That evening enjoy stargazing under a new moon. Driving time will be 2 hours. Expect to hike up to 4 miles. \nDAY 3:\nOn Day 3 we drive twenty minutes to Crack-in-the-Ground and hike this volcanic fissure which is about 2 miles long and up to 30-feet deep. Around noon\, our small caravan will stop in Christmas Valley for groceries and to fill up at a gas station. That afternoon we drive about two hours through Oregon’s Outback on hard-pack and paved roads. Emerging onto Hwy 20 we pass through the town of Brothers and Millican then to the University of Oregon’s Pine Mountain Observatory (PMO) for an evening of star watching. We’ll camp in a Forest Service site at the base of the observatory. We’ll have several hours to explore. The evening star show starts at 9 pm; schedule allowing\, visitors are provided with a tour of the large telescopes\, which includes a refurbished 15-inch scope! Plan on staying up late. PMO’s elevation is 6\,500 feet. Driving time is 2.5 hours\, could be more based on road conditions. Expect to hike up to 5 miles today. \nDAY 4:\nThe final morning we’ll sleep in\, and plan on heading back to Eugene at 10 am. Those who wish to head directly back are welcome to\, the rest are welcome to visit several sites that are just off the highway: the High Desert Museum\, Lava Lands Visitor Center & Lava Butte\, and Lava River Cave. Coming over Willamette Pass we’ll stop for a stretch break at Salt Creek Falls. The goal is to return to Eugene by 6 pm. Driving time today is 3.25 hours. Plan on walking up to 4 miles.  \nPRE-TRIP MEETING: There will be a short pre-trip meeting for participants on Monday\, July 2nd at 5:30pm\, held upstairs at the Martet of Choice grocery store at Willamette and 29th street. \nCAMPING\, WEATHER  & ELEVATION:\n# Campsites are first-come-first-served; if something is full it means we might have to bush camp.\n# Campsites are primitive; meaning many offer tables\, fire pits\, and pit toilets\, but there’s NO water or trash service.\n# Weather could include hot and cold extremes\, bring rain gear\, sun hat\, sun glasses\, warm hat for the night\, etc.\n# We will be hiking and camping between 5\,000 and 6\,500 feet\, plan for cold nights. \nDRIVING\n# The trip needs at least 2 drivers (trip leader is driving one car) with 3 or 4 people per car. A third driver is welcome.\n# All wheel drive cars are required. \nMONEY & FEES:\n# Additional Trips Fees: Fort Rock tickets are $10 and payable to the trip leader\, the PMO donation is $5\, the High Desert Museum ranges from $15/adult or $12/senior.\n# Cars should bring a public lands pass for forest service\, blm\, etc.\n# Bring extra cash for munchies and any supplies for when we’re in town. \nMISC:\n# The trip is fixed at 7 participants (this is the number of tickets for the cave).\n# Pine Mountain has some rules about red lights and camping; read about them here: https://pmo.uoregon.edu/visiting/\n# We will depart from a location in southeast Eugene\, you are welcome to use street parking for your vehicle if you are leaving it.\n# The departure address\, Google route map and location info links will be sent to confirmed participants.
