DESCRIPTION:We will carpool up to Westfir\, and then ride Aufderheide Drive as it gently rises to Kiahanie Campground\, enjoying the fall colors.   We’ll make a lunch stop at Kiahanie Campground\, and then relax for an easy descent back to the cars.  (If the weather is nice and riders are strong\, we could ride all the way to Box Canyon–but this involves another 10 miles with significant climbing\, so this is strictly optional) \nThe number of people who can go will depend upon the number of bikes the cars can carry–so anyone who has a car with a bike rack\, please offer to drive! \nIf smoke from the Terwilliger or other fires is a problem\, the trip will be cancelled

SUMMARY:The High Desert Museum
DESCRIPTION:Early departure:  Load bus 7:15\, depart 7:30 \nWe begin this trip with an early departure time in order to make the 11:30 “Birds of Prey” presentation at the High Desert Museum.  Our route will take us up Highway 58 to Oakridge\, where we will have a short coffee break at Green Waters Park beside the Willamette River.  There is much to see and explore at High Desert\, both inside the building and outside on the trails.  In doors there are several art galleries\, the Hall of Plateau Indians\, a Desertarium\, the Trading Post\, and the Rim Rock Café.   Outside there are trails to explore which will take you to the Birds of Prey Center\, The Changing Forest\, the 1904 Miller Ranch & Sawmill\, the Otter Exhibit and more.   At 1:00 there may be an opportunity to watch the otters interact with their handlers as they are fed lunch.  As we travel on Highway 58 and through the Crescent Lake Cutoff we will be on the watch for signs of fall color.  We will stop at Salt Creek Falls on the return trip and allow time for a short walk along Salt Creek to the top of the falls.  Lunch is on your own; either in the Rim Rock Café or bring a sack lunch. Picnic tables are available in shaded areas of the parking lot. SUMMARY:Metolius River / Smith Rock
DESCRIPTION:We will camp on the Metolius River at Lower Canyon Campground with Gorge Campground as a back up if Lower Canyon is gated.  Lower Canyon will be free if gate is open. Gorge is $14 per site with 50% discount with Senior Pass.  I’m thinking two tents per site.  Am not making reservations.  Should be no problem.  Both campgrounds have vault toilets.  Water will be from the river. \nVern is graciously providing meats and veggies for skewers at dinner\, as well as pineapple upside down cake for dessert.  I am bringing fresh rolls and butter.  1 – 2 additional side dishes would be welcome\, but not required. Each person is still responsible for own breakfast and lunches.  Temperatures should be in the low 30’s overnight.  Currently there is a slight chance of rain.  Campfires are permissible.  I will bring wood. \nAfter setting up camp\, we will hike out and back from the campground to the Wizard Falls Fish Hatchery. 5.4 miles/ 100′ \nTuesday morning we will break camp\, drive to Smith Rock\, and hike the Summit Trail Loop.  7 miles/ 1100′.  Lunch will be on the trail.  I expect to head back to Eugene by 3:00 – 3:30 pm.

SUMMARY:River walk/Natural Hist Museum
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the bookstore\, Alder and 13th.  The Natural History Museum is displaying 2 life size sculptures of mammoths this weekend.  The museum does not open until noon so we will start with a walk to the Knickerbocker Bridge follow the canal and return to the university via the Autzen Bridge.  For those who are interested we will go on to the museum and check out the sculptures and see what is going on and why they are there.  For those who are interested there is the possibilty of lunch at the art museum.

DESCRIPTION:Weather update from Brad who canceled: “Scott Lake weather\, 90% rain this morning tapering down to 60% this afternoon\, high of 44. I’m thinking zero visibility.”  We will drive up the McKenzie Highway to take FS Road 260\, a 1.5 mile gravel road\, to the trailhead. It is about a two hour drive. There is almost a 360 degree panoramic view from the summit.  We could decide instead  to take the  loop hike to Hand Lake adding a few more miles.  Moderate pace. UPDATE: If rain is an issue when we meet\, our alternative will be to hike in the Thurston Hills area walking south from Albertsons to the Weyerhauser Haul Road\, Spine Trail\, and more. DESCRIPTION:Hit the trails on the 25th National Public Lands Day to restore the connecting Floral Hill trail off of the Ribbon Trail.  Meet at Hendricks Park at the picnic tables in the playground area near the parking lot. The Floral Hill Trail Restoration Project involves loading and moving gravel\, spreading and compacting.  Lighter duty work will be trailside vegetation removal.  The Hendricks Park Volunteer Coordinator hopes to have 30 folks on board to help with the project.  The time listed on the flyer is 9AM -1PM. DESCRIPTION:This trip is based in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park\, Elk Creek Campground (northern Calif). Campground has running water and showers available (coin operated I believe). There are lots of great hiking options in the vicinity\, including: Fern Canyon\, beach hiking\, and numerous groves of redwoods to explore.  Planned itinerary:  Day 1: Drive to Prairie Creek Redwood SP with a sack lunch stop at Illinois River Forks State Park (near Cave Junction). Set up camp; explore Visitor’s Center & Elk Prairie Trail.   Day 2: Hike the Miner’s Ridge/Fern Canyon/James irvine Loop trails; Day 3: Drive 24 miles south to Patrick’s Point S.P. where we can explore the bluff trail\, plus the numerous side trails to viewpoints and Agate Beach. Day 4: Break camp; hike the Cathedral Trees Loop; Stop on our way home at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to stretch legs on two co-joined 1/2-mile loops.  This itinerary is the leader’s suggestions; participants are free to do their own thing while at Prairie Creek.. \nFOOD: Potluck for Thursday evening meal.   ALL OTHER MEALS ARE OWN YOUR OWN. Bring your own cook stove\, cooking equipment\, etc. \nMembers have sign-up preference for 3 days after the trip is posted. Within 5 days of signing up\, mail a check payable to Obsidians ($40 members\, 45 non-members) to the leader (Kathy Randall):  4495 Corona St\, Eugene 97404.\nThe costs include the campground fee and trip fee only. DESCRIPTION:Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box. Sunset is 7:05 pm and moonrise is at 7:23 pm.  I plan to take the main trail to the summit. SUMMARY:Coffin Mt/Bachelor Mt
DESCRIPTION:Please indicate if you can drive.  We will need  2 or 3 cars.  It is a two hour drive – Highway 22\, past Santiam Y junction- 12.7 miles\, and then left on Straight Creek Rd for 4.1 miles\, gravel Rd 1168 for 3.8 miles\, Rd 450 with immediate Coffin Mt. Lookout trailhead. It is 1.5 miles with elevation of 1020 ft. up to the lookout with beautiful views of mountains. Plan on a snack. Back at the trailhead\, we will drive up Rd 1168 for .7 miles\, park our cars\, and walk 2 miles up to Bachelor Mountain\, 1115 ft.   We will  have lunch at the top where we will can look down into the Coffin and have even better views of Mt. Jefferson. Both of these are ridge hikes with continuous views of fall color and mountains.    If rain predicted\, I’ll substitute another destination    Update: We will meet the three out of town  hikers where we turn from Highway 22 onto Straight Creek Rd.

DESCRIPTION:Fawn Lake is a lovely lake west of Crescent Lake with great views of Lakeview and Redtop mountains.  Our backpack in is 3.7 miles (one way) with a gradual ascent. DESCRIPTION:This is a multi-pitch trad climb meaning we will place protection as we go and then rappel from the top.  The climb is located in northern California and is on solid granite.  Those signing up for the trip will need advanced rock climbing skills including climbing vertical rock (rated 5.6)\, belaying a lead climber and rappelling.  We will be leaving Eugene around 4 PM on Friday\, drive down and camping at Castle Rock state park\, then get up at 4:30 AM to climb.

SUMMARY:Lava Beds/ Crater Lake Equinox
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4 day\, 3 night trip to the Lava Beds National Monument & Crater Lake National Park (this is the leader’s first visit to Lava Beds so the first part of the trip is exploratory). Lava Bed’s two main attractions are the historical sites of the Modoc War and exploring up to twenty the lava tube caves. Most of the caves have ladders and walkways. Some will involve crawling\, stooping through low sections\, and walking across rough floors. Only one cave has lighting. At Crater Lake\, we will enjoy stunning views from the western rim. Then celebrate the Autumnal Equinox with dinner at the historic Crater Lake Lodge. The final day we’ll visit Mount Scott the only location where the entire lake will fit into a regular camera’s view finder. Expect bright nights as a Harvest Moon will be approaching with each evening. \nTrip cost (campsite fess) will be determined in early September. \nDay 1: Thursday\, September 20\nWe’ll depart Eugene at 8 am and drive to the Lava Beds National Monument where we’ll arrive between Noon and 1 pm. The driving route will be 58 to 97 to Klamath Falls the over the California border to Lava Beds. Camping is first-come-first-served at the Monument’s Indian Wells Campground so finding 2 spots will be our first priority. Afterward\, we can hike the trails and explore some of the many caves. Pack light\, we might need to hike a quarter mile into the backcountry to camp if the campground is full (this is very unlikely\, but it is a possibility). There are no stores nearby. The campground has running water and flush toilets\, but no showers. \nDay 2: Friday\, September 21\nSpend all day exploring caves and hiking. \nDay 3: Saturday\, September 22 (Autumnal Equinox 6:54pm)\nBreak camp by 9 am\, if time and the route allow\, drive to the Petroglyph section to see some of the largest concentration of petroglyphs in the US. Our drive to Crater Lake’s western rim will take about 2.5 hours\, including a stretching stop.  At Crater Lake\, we will explore the Watchman that overlooks the lake\, and the picturesque Annie Creek Canyon near the campground. We will be overnighting in two tent camping areas at the Mazama campground. This is great opportunity to get cleaned up and enjoy a shower. Celebrate the equinox with 7 pm dinner reservations at the Crater Lake Lodge. Those who prefer to eat in the campground are welcome to do so. \nDay 4: Sunday\, September 23\nBreak camp by 9 am and drive to the eastern rim where we’ll start at the Mount Scott trailhead (hiking 5 miles round trip\, and 1\,300 feet of elevation gain) to the summit of Mount Scott (elevation of 8\,929) for breathtaking views of Crater Lake.  The drive back to Eugene is 3.5 hours. Plan to return late afternoon. \nNOTE 1 : There will not be a pre-trip meeting for this trip. About 3 weeks before the departure date the trip leader will touchbase with participants via email. The departure location will be provided\, \nNOTE 2 : If you are very uncomfortable with dark small spaces\, or elevations of ~9\,000 feet\, you might want to reconsider this trip.

DESCRIPTION:This is the first time we are going to try mountains in the Tatoosh range as an Obsidian trip–fun! We are going to drive up i-5 on Friday night. We’ll car camp Friday night. Saturday we’ll hike in with our backpacking gear\, drop our camping gear at a camping spot and take climbing gear and summit Lane peak. We’ll see how the day goes\, then we can hike to the summit of Plummer Peak\, or we can just hang at our amazing camp spot and have dinner. Sunday we’ll pack up camping gear and hike near Pinnacle Peak. We’ll drop camping gear and take camping gear up Pinnacle. We’ll drive home Sunday.\nLane is two rope lengths of easy\, scrambly climbing\, then we’ll rappel off.\nPinnacle is a little scramble up\, then one long rope length of fun rock climbing.

DESCRIPTION:***IMPORTANT***The hike will be cancelled should there be excessive smoke.  \nFor those in appropriate condition\, this is a chance to do a straightforward 20 mile hike.  The trail is not flat; there are stretches of short but significant climbs.  The plan is to get on the trail well before 8:30 and finish by 3:30.  Early miles when it is cool and one is fresh pay dividends in the afternoon\, when one is tired.  The top priority is to do the hike.  It’s long\, and we need to keep moving\, with short breaks to eat\, hydrate\, then move again before stiffening up.  I don’t plan doing 10 (miles) before 10 (am)\, but I would like to have lunch at South Shelter\, 13.5 miles in\, using the afternoon to finish the remaining miles. For those having difficulty\, Shadow Bay is a bail out option at about 15 miles.  Be able to walk comfortably at a walking pace for a long distance; I recommend the full river walk in Eugene\, which is 15 miles.
