SUMMARY:Obsidian Grounds
DESCRIPTION:We will be doing fall cleanup and maintenance (mowing\, weed whacking\, weeding beds) to get things spruced up for the ExploraTalk and the start of other fall Obsidian functions. It may still be too dry to use lawnmowers and if so we will use weed whackers to cut back some of the summer’s growth. If you have a weed whacker that you could bring it would be a plus.

SUMMARY:Waldo Lake Weekend
DESCRIPTION:### Please arrive with your own vehicle or arrange for your own carpooling. Campsites are not reservable after Labor Day so the sites are first come first served. You are responsible for paying for your own camping site\, about $22/night. ###\nThis is a 3-day (2-night) camping trip to Waldo Lake. Day hikes for the trip will be determined around the Friday night campfire.\nFriday 13th: arrive at Waldo Lake on your own schedule. We will be camping at the southern-most campground on the lake (Shadow Bay Campground). Sites in Loop B will be our first choice; with Loop C and D as alternates. If Shadow Bay is unexpectedly closed we will find space in the North Waldo Campground. There is a full Harvest Moon tonight – possible night hike. \nSaturday 14th: Hike as needed. For those who wish\, they can try to the find the Waldo Tree. If you know where it is\, please don’t spoil the fun for those who want to locate it. Participants are given a general direction\, two photos\, no map (yes\, the tree can be found). \nSunday 15th: Hike as desired; return home on your own schedule.

SUMMARY:Broken Top Crater Lake/Tam McAuthur
DESCRIPTION:This hike starts @ Three Creek Lake. We will hike 2.5 miles to the viewpoint on Tam McAurthur Rim then continue along the trail and a user trail 2.2 miles to Broken Hand. We will hike around Broken Hand. This small section of trail is narrow and has drop off on one side\, so caution is necessary. Once around Broken Hand we will be able to look down on Broken Top lake nestled in the crater. This lake is sometimes called “No Name Lk”. We will be able to hike along the rim for awhile and scramble down a good trail to the lake.\nIt is a long\, but very rewarding\, day. If weather is clear we will have up close views of the Sisters.

DESCRIPTION:Mt Thielsen is the perfect first Oregon mountain to climb. It is about a 10 mile trip round trip. Then\, there is a great ridge with a bit of exposure that we will scramble up. Then we put on our harnesses and climb the final rock to the summit. Participants need to be comfortable with exposure and need to be in good enough physical shape for a 12 hour day. SUMMARY:Scott Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mountain Loop is one of my favorite hikes. We will hike to four lakes; Benson\, Tenas\, Hand and Scott Lakes. We will have amazing views of cascade peaks from the top of Scott Mt. We hike through old growth forests\, meadows\, the western edge of a major lava flow and one of the best picture spots for the Three Sisters.\nBring your swim suit or water shoes if you would like to take quick dip in Tenas Lake. I plan on lunch on the top of Scott Mountain. Later in the hike there is a great spot for huckleberries (hopefully they will be ripe).\nWe will likely be back in Eugene by 5 PM.\nThis is a long hike with a moderate fast pace due to the distance. SUMMARY:Diamond Peak: PCT and Mt. Yoran trails
DESCRIPTION:To make this a one-way hike we will do a key exchange and divide into two hiking groups. Joel Greer will lead one group and Steve Adey the other. \nOne group will start at the Vivian Lake trailhead (by Hemlock Butte) on W side of Diamond Peak. They will hike E on the Mt. SUMMARY:Rigdon Lakes
DESCRIPTION:This is a hike that William Sullivan added back to the top 100 Hikes of the Central Cascades. The trail starts along Waldo Lake and then turns North to venture around the Upper & Lower Ridgon lakes and Lake Kiwa. About 70% of this area burned in 1996 but is coming to life with new young trees now 4-12 feet tall. The treasure of this hike at this time of the year are HUCKLEBERRIES. Hopefully ripe -we will snack along the way. Bring a container to fill at our lunch stop. We will also stop for a swim in Waldo Lake. We should be back to Eugene around 5 PM.

SUMMARY:Brice Creek
DESCRIPTION:(FYI: This was from your last Brice Trip including Trestle falls) \nBrice Creek is a beautiful drop and pool creek with fast running water this time of year. Trestle Falls\, upper and lower\, are on a side loop trail at the beginning of the hike. This is where most of the elevation gain will be.Wild flowers should be going strong. The loop trail brings us back to the main trial and we continue on along the creek for the rest of the hike. This is a car shuttle. We will leave a car at the bottom to carry drivers back to the top.

SUMMARY:Amazon Hdwtrs/Spencer Butte
DESCRIPTION:If this is your first time on this Obsidian hike and/or if this is first time you have hiked up Spencer Butte from the lowest elevation\, you may want to call the leader to discuss the pace. It is a conditioning hike where everyone is challenging themselves to go at a moderate or fast pace. —not like the other hikes on our schedule. If you have questions\, email summertrips@obsidians.org.\nEvery Wednesday we do this hike from the Martin Street Trailhead to the summit of Spencer Butte. Compared to starting at the paved Spencer Butte parking lot\, this hike has double the climbing and three times the distance. A great way to get and stay in shape. Registered guests are welcome. \nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street. s from Canyon Drive Street sign with the hiker symbol.

SUMMARY:Lookout Creek
DESCRIPTION:Lookout Creek Old Growth Trail located in the H J Andrews Experimental Forest with trees 450 years of age. This trail is hiked out and back. With some of the going steeply up and down. This area has several on going research projects. I have not hiked this trail before\, so I consider this hike exploratory. I will have a few pages of history on the area for those who would like to know more.

SUMMARY:Vivian Lake from Salt Cr Falls
DESCRIPTION:We will begin at the Salt Creek Falls Observation Site and Picnic Area\, hike past Diamond Creek Falls and Fall Creek Falls\, and stop for lunch at Vivian Lake. We will return the way we came\, except at Diamond Creek Falls we will take the other side of the loop that leads back to our starting point at Salt Creek Falls. There will be plenty of time for photographs of the pretty waterfalls and Vivian Lake. Scouting notes from August 7: very shady overall\, generally well marked trail but some ambiguous trail junctions. Ripe huckleberries in several places. Need mosquito repellent. Side trip to view Diamond Creek Falls from below was very worthwhile.

SUMMARY:Sutton Creek / Alder Dune
DESCRIPTION:This is a pretty easy hike\, with a little bit of dune hiking. We will do the Sutton Creek Loop (page 168 of Sullivan’s Coast book)\, leaving from the Holman Vista\, with a detour to Alder Dune Campgroup for lunch by Dune or Alder Lake (and swimming if the weather permits). There are three bathrooms along the way\, flush toilets at each of them. \nI will need an Assistant Leader to handle the departure from Target as I will already be in Florence. I will meet the group at the Holman Vista. Please email me\, judygiers@gmail.com\, if you can act as Assistant Leader

SUMMARY:Blueberries & Hatchery via LTD
DESCRIPTION:Hi all! I am looking forward to our small group exploration. The weather will be warm in the afternoon–in the 80’s. We will be near the McKenzie\, and doing most of our activity before 3 PM. \nI plan on bringing an 8 cup container and a 4 cup container which fit into my day pack. The farms will hold our berries if we decide to loop back to pick the harvest up. I will bring freezer baggies in case we need them. \nThe Plan:\nMeet 8:05 AM “G” Station at LTD Downtown Eugene.\nDepart LTD Bus # 91 McKenzie River at 8:20 AM\nReturn 4:30 PM LTD Bus from Leaburg\nArrive at 9 AM U-Pick Blueberries at Organic Redneck Farm. Use a buddy system—price break at 10 pounds. Berry system will last til mid August. Then walk upriver along the Leaburg Canal to the EWEB dam and Fish Hatchery.\n11 AM Tour at Leaburg Fish Hatchery. EWEB has been required to lower the water in the Leaburg canal. How has this impacted local fisheries?\nAfter lunch near the Leaburg reservoir and Dam\, we will follow the canal levee downriver to Greenwood Drive. We will walk along Greenwood Drive. Here we are closer to the river. We have several choices of what to do. Small Mom and Pop farms have more berries and lavender for sale. \n3:30 PM We have a choice to stop at a boat landing or to tour a second Salmon Fish Hatchery to hear about the impact of canal hydrology and spawning salmon. If we tour the Salmon Fish Hatchery\, we will catch the bus at the Hatchery at about 4:30. I am bringing bright bicycle vests for safe walking to HWY bus stop. It is really a short distance. \nBring your curiosity and questions about our foods and fish and nearby rural community.
