SUMMARY:Waldo Mountain Loop
DESCRIPTION:We will hike to the summit with it’s splendid views\, and perhaps a late lunch.  The descent will be by way of a different trail to Waldo Meadows\, then out .5 miles to the Salmon Lakes and Salmon Creek Falls before returning to the cars.  The trail through the meadows could be a bit overgrown. \nPlease note the late start time.  My hope is to get the soft late afternoon light during the return hike.  For those who desire post hike refreshments\,  Brewers Union Local in Oakridge is a fine choice.

SUMMARY:Phantom Orchid Hike
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the Spencer Butte Trailhead\, the paved parking lot.  We will  hike up the main trail to the Meadow Intersection(first intersection)  and then start downhill for around 10-15 minutes to the place where the rare phantom orchids appear each year. Retracing our steps uphill  back to the intersection and then down to   the parking lot.  I’m not sure  about the elevation gain.\nOptional is to hike the 1/2 mile to the summit adding several 100 feet  to the  elevation gain.  Email me at jbjacobsen@comcast.net if  you have questions.

SUMMARY:Middle Pyramid
DESCRIPTION:This is one of my favorite hikes in the Old Cascades. The hiker is rewarded with mature forest\, small waterfall\, glacial cirque\, early summer wildflowers\, sub-alpine forest and a great view on a clear day. \nStart the trail on a bridged creek crossing. Trail climbs at a moderate grade through mixed forest of Douglas and True Fir.  The trail levels out near a brushy area at the bottom of a glacial cirque. The trail then climbs steeply through forest and then south facing clearings.  Follow a ridge interspersed with rock gardens and wildflowers to the north side of the Middle Pyramid. Trail travels through dense sub-alpine forest to the summit.  The top of Middle Pyramid once had a lookout.  On a clear day\, hikers have a 360 degree view of the area.

SUMMARY:Yapoah Crater Geology
DESCRIPTION:This classic Obsidian hike will take us up a short section of the PCT beyond South Mathieu Lake to some excellent views of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an excellent view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake\, one of the most unusual lakes in the area\, partly formed by a lava dam. Each hiker will receive a geologic map of the area. We will almost certainly encounter some large patches of snow. Hiking poles (at least 1) are very helpful in maintaining balance when crossing these snow patches. I highly recommend them. How much snow remains to be seen.

DESCRIPTION:SOMETHING DIFFERENT BECAUSE OF THE BUTTE TO BUTTE RACE.\nThe race will make getting to our usual starting place on Martin street difficult at best. This week we will break into two or three groups. One\, lead by Dave Cooper\, will start from the Blanton trailhead. Round trip from Blanton is 9 miles.  Janet Jacobsen will lead the other group starting at the Dillard Road/Baldy parking lot. The route to the top from Dillard is about a mile shorter than from Blanton. Let’s assume that the Dillard group goes at a bit slower pace. If both groups leave at 8:00 we might come together at the tie trail junction. Anyone wanting a slower pace from the Blanton start can just sign-in early and get started. Or start from the 52nd and Willamette trailhead. Carla Cooper will have a sign-in sheet there.  That would keep their distance down to about 5 miles. There will be a way to sign in at all three start locations.

SUMMARY:Row River Trail
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Trailhead Park on Main Street in Cottage Grove (E. Main St. and S. 10th St). Self- arrange carpooling.  \nRow River Trail bike ride: this is a pleasant out and back 31 mile ride on an old railroad line from Cottage Grove upstream along the Row River. Several historic bridges are viewed and/or crossed along the trail which skirts Dorena Lake and ends at Culp Creek\, riding through a mix of wooded and farm stretches.  Elevation change is minimal. Several picnic areas along the way provide restrooms and nice lunch options. Trip leader will entertain the possibility of participants lounging over lunch around mile 12 on the reservoir (making it a 25 mile mile round trip) while others complete an additional 3+ miles and return for lunch themselves.

DESCRIPTION:Please indicate if you can drive when you sign up. We will need drivers who are comfortable driving their vehicle on  gravel and  a section that is “narrow\, steep and rough” according to Sullivan in his Central Cascades hiking book.   We will car pool from LCC and meet Michael in Cottage Grove. From Cottage Grove we will drive up the paved road along Brice Creek\, turn on RD 2212 for 6 miles.\, then another 8.3 miles to Champion Saddle\,  RD 2460 toward Fairview Peak. Another mile takes you to Bohemia Saddle County Park for the hike to Bohemia Mountain (5\,840’ ). Other stops include Bohemia City (a ghost town)\, a rock garden just below the town with wildflowers\, Musick Guard station\, Fairfield Peak.

DESCRIPTION:I found an old Sweet Home Ranger District booklet that describes this hike with the elevation gain given as 1100 ft. The trail takes us through a mix of forest and meadows\, along and then across a creek\, to two lakes tucked in the forest.  Several hikers enjoyed a swim in the lake before lunch last year (6/25/17). Mosquitos were present\, but not particularly bothersome. SUMMARY:Crescent Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This is one of my favorite hikes.  After a gradual 100′ descent to pretty Maude Creek in the first 1.3 miles\, the trail climbs steeply at 700-800’/mile for the next two miles and traverses huge open meadows which should have plenty of wildflowers.  There is another significant\, but shorter climb through a wooded area near the summit\, where there are remains from a lookout tower.  After Maude Creek\, there is no water.  From the summit\, one can see the Pyramids\, Cone Peak\, and there is a nice view of the High Cascades.  We will return the way we came.

SUMMARY:Mt Washington Graduation Climb
DESCRIPTION:Graduates of 2018 Climb School have preference for this climb. All others will be placed on Wait List. If space is still available on June 25\, the climb will be opened to those on the Wait List. \nClimb Rating: I-4 \nWe’ll start hiking south on the PCT at its junction with the Old Santiam Wagon Road (East of Big Lake). We will arrive at trailhead at dusk to car-camp on Friday. Climbers also have the option of arriving at the trailhead Saturday morning. The route follows the PCT for three miles to a junction with a climber’s trail. One mile on the climber’s trail followed by 1½ mile on the North Ridge will get us to the ledge where we’ll put on harnesses and ascend with prusik loops on a fixed line. Two easier pitches beyond will get us to the summit. Descent will be via down-climbing and rappelling to the ledge\, followed by descending the scree trail back to the intersection of the PCT and the climber’s trail. Expect a long day. We’ll leave the trailhead at 4:30 AM and may not return until 9:00 or 10:00 PM.

SUMMARY:Iron Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Departure place : Springfield Safeway at Pioneer Plaza on West Q street on the west side.\nWe will drive up Marcola Road through Mohawk Valley to Sweet home\, then 34 miles Highway 20 to Deer Creek Trailhead\, FS Road 15 near milepost 63.   Our loop hike begins by walking 1.2 miles to Tombstone Pass and the Cone Peak Trailhead.  It is around 4.6 miles with ups and downs to the platform on the summit. The last mile to the summit is narrow with steep switchbacks. From the top\, it is around 2 miles downhill back to our cars.  The pace will be moderate with time to stop to enjoy the colorful landscapes of flowers.  The early departure is to avoid the crowds and to have plenty of time to reach the summit around 12 :30 where we will have lunch.  Although it is not a “close up” flower identification hike\, we will be sharing the names of flowers. I was there on June 22 and the flower packed fields were amazing. DESCRIPTION:Horse Pasture has one of the best views of the 3 Sisters and great wildflowers.  The summit has the remains of an old fire look out.  The trail starts in the woods and it breaks out on a rocky open slope where you can see the summit that when you reach it will give you a 360 degree view of the surrounding country.

SUMMARY:North Umpqua Waterfalls
DESCRIPTION:Due to the logistics of multiple stops\, we’ll ideally fit into two vehicles. Our (ambitious) goal will be to see 7 waterfalls along the North Umpqua River and its tributaries. 2 are roadside and 5 will involve short (0.6 mi) to medium (3.4 mi) length hikes. The hiking pace will be brisk without much dawdling but will allow time for photos. Our first stop will be Fall Creek Falls where we’ll shimmy through a house-sized boulder with a crack down the middle before reaching this beautiful falls; then we’ll take in the infamous Toketee Falls which is easily one of Oregon’s most photographed falls (for good reason – it is stunning); next is dramatic Watson Falls\, Oregon’s third tallest waterfall; then Whitehorse and Clearwater Falls which are roadside and worthy of stopping to stretch our legs; finally we’ll drive over a dam to reach Lemolo Falls and Warm Springs Falls before heading back to Eugene. This will be long day with a lot of driving through some of Oregon’s most scenic countryside – it’s worth it!

DESCRIPTION:This will be an easy to moderate paced hike.  The trail is uphill with switchbacks before leveling off to traverse the hills leading to the top of Lowder Mtn..  We will pass 3 meadows with occasional views of the Cascades.  The final push will be a steep uphill for a 1/2 mile before reaching the top.  Arriving at a flat plain we will cross to the East side of Lowder Mtn.\, where I hope we will have a view of the Cascades.

DESCRIPTION:This classic Obsidian hike will take us up a short section of the PCT beyond South Mathieu Lake to some excellent views of the Cascade Volcanic Arc. From the top of Yapoah Crater there is an excellent view of recent lava flows and glacial features near North Sister and Collier Cone. Climbing the volcanic cone is optional. On the return loop we will visit North Mathieu Lake\, one of the most unusual lakes in the area\, partly formed by a lava dam. Each hiker will receive a geologic map of the area. We will almost certainly encounter some large patches of snow. Hiking poles (at least 1) are very helpful in maintaining balance when crossing these snow patches. I highly recommend them. How much snow remains to be seen.

SUMMARY:Mt. Pisgah Summer Solstice
DESCRIPTION:NOTE time change as of June 7th. The parking lot will be crowded.  Look for us by my car a row or two down from the fee box.  Sunset is 8:59pm. I plan to take trail 17 and 4 to catch the main trail to the summit. Our goal is to view the rays of the sunset shining through the Mt. Pisgah Sighting Pedestal. We will take the main trail (#1) back to the parking lot.

DESCRIPTION:Tom Titus is a biologist\, instructor\, and author of the memoir “Blackberries in July: A Forager’s Field Guide to Inner Peace”. Tom will address how a pair of 12\,200-year-old lizard mummies excavated from Paisley Caves\, his University of Oregon course “Amphibians and Reptiles of Oregon\,” and his popular writing coalesced into the grassroots and dirt-poor Sagebrush Lizard Genome Project. Along the way he’ll delve into the natural history of reptiles of the Northern Great Basin\, how to sequence a novel genome\, and the world of ancient DNA. Tom will conclude with a short reading from his spring 2017 Oregon Quarterly essay “Lizard Tales”.

SUMMARY:Vivian Lake
DESCRIPTION:A great waterfall hike!  Many are familiar with Salt Creek Falls but two more falls are to be found up the trail from this highway close fall.  A short side trip goes to the base of Lower Diamond Creek Falls\, a 100-foot cascade.  Farther on is mossy\, tumbling Fall Creek and another impressive fall.  We can have lunch at Vivian Lake and follow the shore to get a view of Mt. Yoran.  Rhodys usually bloom in June.

SUMMARY:Cape Perpetua
DESCRIPTION:Update:  Three of us will be  driving over the the coast so we have room for one more person to sign up. The focus will be the tidepools with minus tide of 1.5 at 10:44am.  The early departure will give us time to park at the Visitors Center and to have time to explore as the tide goes out.  I’ll check on possibility of a  guided tour.  We will also take the paved Trail of Restless Waters to see terraced tidepools and Devil’s Churn.  Last will be the Whispering Spruce Trail 750 feet up to the 1934 rock viewing  shelter.   The Giant Spruce and a very late “2nd lunch ”  at Luna Café  in Yachats will be the driver’s choice.   We will need a Northwest Forest Pass for each vehicle.
