SUMMARY:Middle Sister Team 2
DESCRIPTION:We will be doing the North Ridge Route on Middle Sister.  The climb will involve an approximately 5.5 mile hike in from the Pole Cr trailhead on Saturday June 16\, then camp and get up early Sunday to climb.  Previously on the hike in we have not needed snow shoes and some people have preferred to ski.  Our high camp (~7200’) will not likely have water so we will plan on melting snow though hopefully we’ll find a site where we don’t have to camp on snow.  On Sunday we will get up early (4:30 AM) and head for the summit. There is one steep portion of the climb above the saddle between Middle and North\, and we will set a fixed line there for safety.  After summiting we’ll come back to camp and pack up and hike out.

SUMMARY:River Walk/Court House Art
DESCRIPTION:This walk will include a visit to the new Federal Court house to view the art exhibited on the lower floors.  The exhibits are usually of local Oregon artist.  For those who have not visited the court house I think you will find it interesting.  The visit will be probably no more then 30 to 45 minutes.  We will then walk to the river path and continue on to either the Autzen or Knickerbocker bridge\, taking in the talking stones we pass along the way.  We will loop back to the Campbell Center and the cars.  For those that are interested there is the possibility of lunch in the 5th Street area.

SUMMARY:Birding at Summer Lake
DESCRIPTION:Load bus at 7:30 a.m.\, depart at 8:00.\nAre you ready for an adventure?  Let’s take a step back in time to a slower pace of life as we journey into the western edge of Oregon’s outback country.  While the focus of this trip will be bird watching and identification\, there is much interesting history and geology in this area as well.  We have reserved the rustic Summer Lake Lodge for two nights and will be right across the road from the Summer Lake Wildlife Refuge.  There will be ample time for bird watching on the refuge\, as well as time for relaxing at the Lodge or for walking.  The Refuge will be alive with shore birds\, water birds\, song birds and predatory birds; these birds will have settled in for the summer to nest and raise their young.  Perhaps we will even see the elusive Yellow-headed Blackbirds.  This trip also includes: the beautiful drive down to Paisley (between Summer Lake and Winter Ridge) for lunch at the historic Pioneer Saloon & Restaurant\, watch for antelope along the way; a stop at Fort Rock State Natural Area; a self-guided tour of Homestead Village Museum at Fort Rock; lunch at the unique Waterin’ Hole Tavern in Fort Rock; and a short stop at Salt Creek Falls on the way home.\nDay one will start with coffee break at Green Waters Park in Oakridge.  Bring a sack lunch for this day\, as we plan a lunch stop at the Klamath Marsh NWR Visitor Center. Other meals\, (two breakfasts\, two lunches\, two dinners) are all included in the cost of the trip. SUMMARY:Saddle Mountain
DESCRIPTION:West of Portland 65 miles\, Saddle Mountain is the tallest mountain in Clatsop County and is best known for its spectacular spring wildflower display and views from its summit that span from the Columbia River Gorge to multiple Cascade peaks and the Pacific Ocean. The trail is steep in spots with interesting “improvements” including chicken wire to apparently help with shoe grip. Hikers have strong opinions about its effectiveness. Steep cliff drop-offs mandate that participants don’t go off trail or become too distracted by the scenery. The area is prone to windy conditions. Please note that since the leader doesn’t like the potential combination of windy conditions + steep cliffs\, and also since having a summit view is an important component of this hike\, that it will be re-scheduled if conditions look too foggy/windy/rainy. Leader enjoys wildflowers but is not a trained botanist. Please note the long drive. The leader will likely continue onward to the coast (only 13 miles away) after the hike and drive south along the coast prior to heading back to Eugene. SUMMARY:Brice Creek with Trestle Falls
DESCRIPTION:Brice Creek is a beautiful drop and pool creek with fast running water this time of year. Trestle Falls\, upper and lower\, are on a side loop trail at the beginning of the hike. This is where most of the elevation gain will be.Wild flowers should be going strong.  The loop trail brings us back to the main trial and we continue on along the creek for the rest of the hike. SUMMARY:Mt Shasta- Hotlum-Bolam Route
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a slog up the North Ridge of Mt Shasta. Unlike the popular Avalanche Gulch on the South side\, this route sees much fewer ascents\, despite it’s many qualities. \nIt’s a non-technical route involving a single night on the moraine at 9\,400ft near a stream with great views. There’s no crevasse hazards\, and nothing above class 2 terrain\, with modeate snow to 35º \nBring overnight gear\, crampons\, standard ice axe\, helmet\, harness\, 2 locking carabiners\, and 2 prusiks. If anything deserves protecting\, it’s the last snow field before the summit\, because the runout below is dangerous and the snow may be icy and precarious. \nI’ll provide a long form description of what to expect for those who join. \nPlease inquire if you’d like more information!

SUMMARY:Wicked Portland Walk
DESCRIPTION:This is a historic (exploratory) walk of downtown Portland’s wicked past (yes\, we will be eating\, enjoy a coffee or two\, and making a trip to Powells on this trip). \nPortland is now home to swank eateries\, posh coffee shops\, and a lively urban scene\, but at one time it was a wild seaport town with a wicked and lusty underworld. For decades\, weathered sea captains bartered in blood money for shanghaied recruits and seedy saloon grifters preyed on freshly arrived tenderfoots from the east. Portland was a place where rotgut whiskey flowed freely\, bordellos floated on the Willamette\, votes could be bought for a pint of beer\, saloons numbered 1 for every 40 people\, murder was common\, and corruption was a way of life. \nAlthough I’ve been to these locations this is the first time trying to piece together a good chunk of Portland’s historic wickedness. Everyone on this trip will help with digging up old stories\, finding locations of former saloons\, and trying to peel back the facade to reveal Portland’s colorful history underneath. We’ll also be looking at the cities modern side and artwork while we walk. \nThe trip begins & ends at the Eugene Amtrak Station. In Eugene\, please be outside the front of the train station by 7:20 am to board the bus. Car parking at the station is $6 and permits can be purchased at the outside kiosk outside. Our walk in Portland will have a relaxed pace\, there will be frequent stops\, and we’ll grab a bite of lunch somewhere. The plan is to be finished by 2 pm-ish\, allowing for personal free time in Portland to visit Powells etc. and to grab some food for the train. We should be inside Union Station by 5:30 pm for seat assignments. We’ll be back in Eugene by 8:40pm. \nINSTRUCTIONS:\nAfter signing up for the trip on the Obsidian website you will need to book the following at Amtrak.com; a round trip from the Eugene Amtrak Station (EUG) to Portland Union Station (PDX)\, round trip tickets can run about $58\, this is cheaper for seniors. \nThe bus/train combo we are taking this trip is:\nA. DESCRIPTION:We will check out the wild flowers and briefly note some of the fascinating volcanic and glacial geology. We will hike at a moderate pace with plenty of stops for water\, snacks and photography. We will be hiking counter-clockwise on the loop. Be prepared for possible patches of snow in the saddle between Iron Mountain and Cone Peak. If we encounter snow\, hiking poles (at least one) can be helpful. Participants have the option of climbing the switchbacks up to the summit or having lunch at the west side trail junction. We will need at least 3 drivers.

SUMMARY:Horse Pasture Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Horse Pasture has one of the best views of the 3 Sisters and great wildflowers.  The summit has the remains of an old fire look out.  The trail starts in the woods and it breaks out on a rocky open slope where you can see the summit that when you reach it will give you a 360 degree view of the surronding country.

SUMMARY:Exploding Whale Hike
DESCRIPTION:Take a hike  to the site of the exploding whale near Florence. Our walk will also pass the location of a memorial noting the solemn and mysterious stranding of 41 Sperm Whales in 1979. Gray Whales will be migrating just off the coast so keep an eye open. Come prepared for sun\, rain\, wind\, or cool temperatures. Bring lunch and snacks. \nMeet at the Target (West 11th in Eugene) parking lot and drive to Florence. In Florence\, drive south over the 101 bridge and turn west on South Jetty Road for 2 miles making a right at the “Y” onto Sand Dunes Road. Park ath the South Jetty Dog Ponds (alternate parking is an 1/8 miles back on the same side of the road) where we will set up a shuttle and drive north 5 miles to the South Jetty #7-Whale Memorial parking lot (pit bathrooms are available). We will be hiking up the jetty then south down the beach and back to the cars. \nIn 1970 a whale carcass near Florence became so foul smelling that local residents wanted it gone. An idea was hatched to use dynamite to blow the putrid mass into tiny little bits so scavengers would take care of the problem. What could go wrong? The result was a massive explosion that blew chunks of blubber far into the sky and onto cars and observers up to a quarter of a mile away. A car suffered some significant damage. Fortunately\, no one was injured\, but many were covered in goo. A TV report of the incident is classic viewing on the web. The story has become a local legend and it is known internationally as just “the exploding whale.”

SUMMARY:Dorris Ranch to Clearwater
DESCRIPTION:This is a beautiful hike along the Middle Fork Willamette River.  There is very little elevation gain.  Most of the hike is in the forest and it should be cool enough to dress lightly.  Take snacks as we will rest at Clearwater Park and then retrace our path back to where we started.  Bring plenty of water.  Restrooms and water at Clearwater and Dorris Ranch parking lots.  Approximately three hours.  Meet at Dorris Ranch\, Springfield\, upper-level parking lot behind the bathrooms.\nOptional lunch at Plank Town.

SUMMARY:Pueblo Mountain
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at SEHS and carpool to this Eastern Oregon peak that hasn’t been visited by the Obsidians since 1985. A turnout on Arizona Creek road will serve as our trail head. We will car camp Saturday night at the Virgin Valley Campground in the Sheldon NWR\, hike Sunday morning\, and then return to Eugene late Sunday night although this could adjusted based on group preference and the weather forecast. \nAt 8\,632 feet\, Pueblo Mountain is the highpoint of a fault-block range sandwiched between Steens Mountain and the Nevada border. This exploratory hike (leader hasn’t hiked this route before) is a peak baggers triple threat; it is the 21st most prominent\, 22nd most isolated\, and 52nd tallest peak in Oregon. This area is home to western juniper\, mountain mahogany\, quaking aspen\, pronghorn antelope\, and mule deer. There is no trail so this will be cross country travel thru fairly open country. There will be some moderate scrambling across rocky terrain. Hikers should be very fit and comfortable with cross-country group travel. Milkshakes at the Fields Station will be our rewards for a successful summit.  \nVehicles should have decent clearance\, 4wd is preferred. Gas stations are far and few between in this area so drivers should plan on refilling their vehicles well before they would in town. Email me at eric160634@gmail.com with any questions. DESCRIPTION:Climb to the top of our amazing state. Meet to carpool from Eugene at Coburg rd Shopko at 8pm Friday evening June 1st or meet at Timberline Wy’east lodge climbers hut at 11:30pm. Climb via standard south side route to the Hogsback and ascend Old Chute or Pearly Gates depending on conditions. Descend to Timberline. Celebrate our success (or drown our bitter sorrows) with milkshakes at the DQ in Sandy. Return to Eugene late Saturday afternoon. This climb requires considerable physical and mental stamina. Climbers may be asked to do a pre-climb training hike with the leader to evaluate their fitness.

DESCRIPTION:We will take LTD Bus 28 at 9:10 to U of O arriving at 9:19  LTD UO Station Bay (B) east of the Bookstore.  The goal for the walk is to find outdoor ornamentation and sculpture symbols before we visit the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at 11:00 or so to see the Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads by sculptor\, Al Weiwei.  They are on exhibit through June 24.   It is the First Friday so Museum is free. Optional lunch at Art Museum. DESCRIPTION:This is an afternoon edition of the weekly aerobic hike starting at the Martin Street Trailhead up to Spencer Butte. We start promptly so come a few minutes early to check in. Wear appropriate clothing for the weather. It is a steady pace varying from moderate to fast and a great way to train for summer hikes.  Guests are welcome. To get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street. Please call the leader if any questions.
