SUMMARY:Cascadia Cave
DESCRIPTION:The Kalapuya people have lived in the Willamette Valley since long before the arrival of settlers in the early 19th century\, and their rock art is still visible at Cascadia Cave. Located on the South Fork of the Santiam River\, this area is both culturally and geologically significant. This site\, on the National Register of Historic Places\, has been used for almost 8000 years. SUMMARY:Brice Creek withTrestle Creek Falls
DESCRIPTION:Brice Creek is a beautiful drop and pool creek with fast running water at this time of year\,  Trestle Falls\, upper and lower are on a side loop trail at the beginning of the hike.  This is were most of the elevation gain will be.  Wildflowers should be going strong.  The loop trail brings use back to the main trail and we continue along the creek for the rest of the hike. SUMMARY:Mt McLoughlin
DESCRIPTION:Appropriate for beginner mountaineers with enough excitement for experienced folks alike! Venture south for expansive summit views atop Southern Oregon’s tallest peak\, Mt. McLoughlin. Carpooling from Eugene is encouraged as both leaders will be camping near Mt. McLoughlin evening of 5/19 after leading Mt. Thielsen. An Interagency or NWFS Pass is required for parking. A $5 drop box is also available at the trailhead for fee requirements. Currently conditions are warm in So OR so mosquito repellant is advised. We will depart from the Mt. McGloughlin Trailhead at 6:30am on Sunday 5/20. The trail follows mellow terrain for about a mile and continues as it intersects with the PCT for about a half mile after leaving the trailhead. After veering off the PCT expect rocky terrain below tree line as we wind through boulder fields. Above tree line we will follow the eastern ridge to the summit on exposed rocky slopes over non technical class II terrain. There is no access to water on this trail. Come prepared for a full day of food and water needed for hiking up hill for 4\,000ft of elevation gain.

DESCRIPTION:Please indicate if you can drive and number of passengers.  We will drive to Smelt Sands State Park where there are bathrooms and arrange the car shuttle to Governor Patterson State Park. Once the drivers return to Smelt Sands\, we should start our hike around 10:30. Lunch will be at Tillicum Beach Campground. We should be at Patterson State Park sometime after 2:00. The minus 1.2 low tide is at 10:58am.   Expect to get your shoes and socks wet when crossing the numerous  streams especially the bigger ones like Big Creek. If we don’t have enough drivers\, we will hike to Big Stump and retrace our steps back to Smelt Sands.

SUMMARY:Mt Shasta
DESCRIPTION:This is a climb to Mt Shasta’s summit at 14\,180 ft via Avalanche Gulch on the south side. Although not a technical climb\, it will require a considerable physical and mental effort to ascend over 7\,200 feet from the trailhead. The rewards include sweeping views of the surrounding valleys and peaks\, and the chance to (hopefully) stand on the summit of one of the most beautiful Cascade peaks.  \nI’ll send more information before the trip\, but for now\, here’s a rough schedule. \nFriday: (Optional) Drive to Mt. Shasta and sleep in town or at the Bunny Flats parking lot/trailhead (6\,950 ft).\nSaturday: Ascend to Helen Lake base camp (10\,443 ft).\nSunday: Early am summit attempt. Return to camp for short rest. Descend to parking lot and drive home. \nConditioning and altitude\nAt 14\,180 ft\, Mt. Shasta requires a significant effort and can induce mild to severe altitude illness. The better your conditioning the better you will enjoy the climb and minimize altitude affects. Best methods include hiking uphill with a weighted pack\, running (hills if possible) and biking.

SUMMARY:Diamond Peak- Graduation Climb
DESCRIPTION:Diamond Peak is a sprawling shield volcano south of Willamette Pass in Oregon’s Cascades. We will climb Diamond Peak’s Pioneer Gulch Trail to the southwest ridge. Initially\, the route will be snow-free\, then we’ll continue on snow to the summit. While not a technical climb\, Diamond Peak is still challenging and what feels like straight uphill. On clear days\, the views from the summit are magnificent.

DESCRIPTION:From the trail head we will hike through small pine stand into a meadow\, then along a narrow grassy ridge. Our destination will be an eroded volcanic vent and radial dyke that erupted roughly 30-36 m.y.a. This is close look at rocks that formed the old Western Cascade volcanic arc some 28 m.y. before the High Cascade volcanic ark formed about 2-3 m.y.a. If we are lucky\, there will also be a few early wildflowers and a good view of the South Willamette Valley.

SUMMARY:Mt. St. Helens  -- Truman Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is a visit to the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument to hike and explore local sites. We’ll be tent camping for two nights at the low-key Eco Lodge Resort and making use of the camp’s Backwoods Cafe for meals. \nFriday\, May 18:\nDepart Eugene and drive 2.75 hours to the visitor center at Silver Lake. At Silver Lake we will break for lunch and visit the museum. In the afternoon we drive another half hour to the massive North Fork Toutle River Sediment Retention Structure that blocks almost 10-miles of ash and sediment. In the afternoon we’ll pitch our tents at the nearby Eco Lodge Resort and explore some of its 12-miles of paths -or- visit some of the area’s trails. If open\, we will stop by the Forest Learning Center just a few miles up the road.  We’ll eat dinner at the Lodge’s “Backwoods Cafe.” The lodge has a communal fire pit. \nSaturday\, May 19:\nAfter breakfast we will drive 40 minutes to the Johnston Ridge Observatory making a stop at Coldwater Lake to explore the boardwalk at the lake’s edge. At Johnston Ridge (4\,300 feet) explore interpretive displays that tell the biological\, geological\, and human story of Mount St. Helens and watch the museum’s short movie. Afterwards we will hike an 8-mile section of the Boudary Trail (#1) & Harry’s Ridge. This is an exposed hike through the blast zone. The first two miles of this route offers views of Coldwater Peak to the north and the gaping Mount St. Helens crater to the south. The trail at the sharp-cornered Devil’s Elbow offers amazing views of the valley that lies 600-feet below. Beyond is the Truman Trail #201\, where we should be treated to amazing crater views.  We’ll keep left at the Truman Trail junction and follow the Boundary Trail for one more mile\, where it connects with Harry’s Ridge Trail #1E. We’ll follow Harry’s Ridge to the right and for the next mile enjoy views of Spirit Lake with its raft of blasted logs.  In the late afternoon we will return to our tents and a dinner at the Backwoods Cafe. NOTE: If there is significant snow on the trail we’ll hike at a lower elevation. \nSunday\, May 20:\nWe will have breakfast and pack up by 10am to drive back to Eugene. In Portland\, the leader might stop by a historic firehouse and a glassblowers facility.  Participants can join him or continue to Eugene. DESCRIPTION:Load bus at 7:30 a.m.\, depart at 8:00.\nOur destination today is the newly expanded Oregon Jewish Museum recently relocated to old town Portland.  This is an early Oregon history trip as well as learning about discrimination in many forms\, including the prominent early 20th century KuKluxKlan.  There are also art and cultural exhibits in three galleries.  We will have a guided tour.  Jewish people\, primarily from Russia and Bavaria started arriving in Oregon by 1850. DESCRIPTION:Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee signs. I’ll try to have my car in the row below so that it is easy for us to meet\, sign up. etc. Depending on weather\, I plan to take back trails (#4 and  the steep #2)  to the summit\, avoiding the main trail #1. Mileage and elevation could vary but around 7 miles at a steady pace. Estimated time is 3 hours so bring snacks. We will divide into two groups if pace varies. Once we reach the summit\, you have the option of going back down on the main trail or the less steep one. DESCRIPTION:This is an exploratory hike to Salmon Creek road just east of Oakridge.  It is a mountain bike trail\, and the weather should be favorable\, although we may see bike traffic.  Remember that they belong here.  The average gradient is 6.8%\, and the distances could be less\, but not likely more.  The elevation gain is likely accurate.

DESCRIPTION:I plan on hiking to all 10 falls. We will start at the South Falls and hike clockwise with lunch at the upper north falls. There will be water on part of the trail\, so I recommend boots. Dress in layers\, bring stocking cap and gloves. There are some concrete stairs with handrails. There is a bathroom at the South Falls day use area and at the North Falls parking lot which we will visit just before lunch. DESCRIPTION:From Washburne Park we will walk south on the beach to the Hobbit Trail\, then up over Heceta Head to the lighthouse for lunch. Some may want to take the lighthouse tour. After lunch we will hike back over Heceta Head and take the Valley River Trail past Beaver Lake to Washburne Park. We will walk at a moderate pace\, stopping several time to look at major geologic features.

It is a great way to train for summer hikes.\nTo get to the trailhead: Take West Amazon to Martin Street. Turn left. Drive past Kinney Park and park on Martin Street at the Kiosk sign board across from Canyon Drive Street sign with hiker symbol. One can take LTD Bus #28 to Martin Street. Please call the leader if any questions. I will be bringing a shovel and broom to clean the stairs on the return trip from summit and will enlist a volunteer to lead return from summit.

SUMMARY:North Bank Habitat
DESCRIPTION:The North Bank Habitat is south of Eugene\, exit 135\, Wilbur.  The drive takes around 1 hour. There is a new parking lot with a bathroom at the trailhead.   The loop boundary ridge hike takes one up and down more than several times on rolling(some steep & challenging) hills/ridgeline with oak savannas\, meadows\, and views of the Umpqua River. It is a moderate to difficult hike. The elevation gain is like doing Mt. Pisgah twice. One can easily avoid the plentiful poison oak. Expect a few sections of the trail to be really muddy. We should start hiking around 9:15 and complete the hike by 2:00.  Depending on our pace\, it could be a late lunch so bring some snacks. If weather conditions are not optimal\, I’ll reschedule.  A map of the area is in Sullivan’s Southern Oregon hiking book.   Optional stop at Rice Hill for ice cream.

SUMMARY:McKenzie Falls Weekend
DESCRIPTION:This is a low-key weekend explore of the McKenzie River’s waterfalls: Sahalie Falls\, Koosah Falls\, and Tamolich Falls (Blue Pool).  \nSaturday\, May 5th:\nDepart Eugene and drive (up 126) to the Sahalie Falls area where we’ll hike the Sahalie & Koosah loop. The trail distance is 5 miles round trip.  We’ll eat lunch by one of the falls. After the hike we’ll drive 15 minutes south to the Olallie Forest Service Campground and set up camp. Our sites are #15 & #16 – the two next to the creek where it joins the McKenzie. People with sore feet might want to visit Belknap Springs that evening. \nSunday\, May 6th:\nIn the morning we break camp and drive about 3 miles to the Tamolich Falls trailhead and hike (4 miles round trip) to the Tamolich Falls (Blue Pool). We’ll have lunch in the area then return to the cars in the early afternoon. We should be back in Eugene by 4 pm. \nWe will depart south Eugene (near the Albertson’s on 30th)\, the exact location will be sent to trip participants prior to the trip. For those not driving residential street parking is available. \n# There is a camping site fee of $7 per person payable to the trip leader.\n# Everyone should contribute a couple of dollars at the campsite to help buy wood.\n# There should not be an extra vehicle fee\, though if this changes campers in the vehicle should help contribute.\n# Because the camping sites are close to the river come prepared for cold temperatures at night.\n# Bring a tent and any camping stuff you need; though please note that space is tight at the campsites.\n# Bring your own meals and snacks.\n# A Forest Service pit toilet is at the campground.\n# Bring earplugs as river noise might keep some awake.\n# Water is available at the campground.\n# Drivers need to bring a forest pass.

DESCRIPTION:Description: Turn right at the sign for West Summit Trailhead and follow pay fee signs. Look for the yellow fee box. I’ll try to have my car in the row below so that it is easy for us to meet\, sign up. etc. Depending on weather\, I plan to take back trails to the summit\, avoiding the main trail #1. Mileage and elevation could vary but around 6 miles to 7.4 at a steady pace. Sometimes we split into two groups to shorten the distance if desired by some. Estimated time is 3 hours so bring snacks. Once we reach the summit\, you have the option of going back down on the main trail for total of 6 miles.. If you don’t have a Lane County pass allow time to purchase one with Debit/Credit card (no cash) at the pay station by trailhead. To buy an annual pass and support the trails\, check out the websites for Friends of the Buford Park ($50.00) or Mt. Pisgah Arboretum. ($50.00/$40.00 for seniors).

SUMMARY:Mt Hood
DESCRIPTION:Climb to the top of our amazing state. Meet to carpool from Eugene at Coburg rd Shopko at 8:30pm Friday evening May 4th or meet at Timberline Wy’east lodge climbers hut at 12am Saturday morning May 5th. Climb via standard south side route to the Hogsback and ascend Old Chute or Pearly Gates depending on conditions. Descend to Timberline. Celebrate our success (or drown our bitter sorrows) with milkshakes at the DQ in Sandy. Return to Eugene late Saturday afternoon. This climb requires considerable physical and mental stamina. Climbers may be asked to do a pre-climb training hike with the leader to evaluate their fitness. We prefer to climb Saturday but may push back to Sunday for a better weather if needed.

SUMMARY:McCall\, Memaloose and Mosier
DESCRIPTION:Wildflowers are the highlight of this trip! Please note the long drive. Ideally we’ll trek three separate trails located off the Historic Columbia Highway east of Hood River. First parking at Rowena Crest\, we’ll hike up McCall Point\, a 3.4 mile out-and-back trail that gains a little over 1000 feet\, and whose summit view includes a stunning span of the Columbia River\, and on a clear day\, Mt. Hood\, and Mt Adams. After lunch on the summit\, we’ll drive 4 miles west and hike the Memaloose Hills\, 3.5 miles of trail with 550 feet of elevation gain. If time and energy levels allow\, we’ll drive another short distance west to the town of Mosier and hike a 3.5 mile loop through the Mosier Plateau\, one of the newest trails in the Gorge (2013). It gains 760 feet of elevation and includes passing through a pioneer cemetery and alongside a scenic waterfall. This will be a long day with a lot of driving. It’s my attempt to pack in as much trail time as possible to make the drive worth it. The leader enjoys wildflowers but is not a professional botanist. Rattlesnakes and ticks are common in the Gorge.
